Villains United consists of the struggle between "The Society" (Luthor, Black Adam, et al) and "The Secret Six" (Deadshot, Cheshire, et al).

But in "Crisis of Conscience" (and, indirectly, "Identity Crisis"), we meet "The Secret Society", which consists of an entirely different group of villains than either "The Society" or "The Secret Six" (Matter Master, Chronos, et al).

To make things more confusing, some people refer to the Luthor/Black Adam group as "The Secret Society of Super Villains", but in Villains United, that group is only referred to as "The Society" (as far as I recall), with no indication of how it ever actually got that name.

Does anyone else find this confusing? Or, at the very least, indicitive of a certain lack of creativity in the naming department? Is there supposed to be some connection between "The Secret Society" and "The Society"??

Oh yeah it's confusing. And what about the group in JSA Classified. The Injustice Society! And then we have the out of continuity Legion Of Doom in Justice. LOL

I think the overall villain group is The Society, with the few heroes banded together to stop them being the Secret Six. The Secret Society was a sub-set of the Society, and they were all a part of the former Secret Society of Super-Villains.

And I'm sure a lot of readers are calling The Society "The Secret Society of Super-Villains" because that's what the last majorly large Society of super-villains was called.

It gets worse. A few years ago in the comic Extreme Justice an in-continuity Legion of Doom was introduced.

Somebody needs to buy DC's editors a thesaurus, that's all I have to say.

When it comes to Extreme Justice, though, I believe it's a common rule amongst fans to never talk about or remember anything that ever happened there. :p

I'm not really confused.

I call the Society "The Society" and the Secret Society of Super Villains the "Secret Society of Super Villains" or for short "SSoSV."

No real problem here, other than internet fans using the wrong names:

The Society is the huge group of villains led by Luthor.
The Secret Six is the group of six villains battling the Society
The Secret Society of Super Villains is an old villain group from the 60's-70's
The Injustice Society is a group composed of all of the JSA's villains.

No real problem, except for the fact that DC's writers apparently can't come up with a name for a team of villains that doesn't have the words "secret" or "society" in it.
