Depends, but hard stuff isn't recommended for most.

Specifically when working on the computer, with lots of typing involved, I like to listen to instrumentals, especially electronica. The stacatto and impersonal nature of much of that music goes with my fast typing style. For example, if I'm typing while listening to The Box, by Orbital, I swear my typing speed goes up slightly. If I'm analyzing information or writing, I prefer trip hop on my computer, for a more relaxed vibe.

If I'm typing something important, like an essay or assignment, I normally put on some instrumental or electronic music, or maybe some post-rock if the vocals aren't too distracting. I wrote a couple essays to Matmos's The Civil War last year, and a couple to Bark Psychosis's Hex this year.
If I'm just screwing around on here, any music will do, depending on my mood.

I find that Trance music works well.

I always listen to the Midge Ure era of Ultravox or early Gary Numan

Hip-Hop or Deep House; maybe a little Drum & Bass. Really depends on my mood.
