View Full Version : What movies should be turned into Musicals

There's been a ton of movies being turned into Broadway Musicals lately. The Producers, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Big, Monty Python and the Holy Grail (called Spamalot), Footloose, The Full Monty, The Color Purple, Nine To Five (hasn't opened yet, but they're working on it) and I heard that Mel Brooks is going to follow up the success of The Producers with Young Frankenstein.
So what other movies would you like to see make the transition to Broadway Musical? Here's a couple I'd like to see:
Office Space. I can just see a recurring fast sung song by Milton about his missing stapler and wanting to burn the building down. I can also see Johanna's boss at the resturaunt singing a song about how you have to have Flair! Throw in a song by Michael about sharing a name with Michael Bolton, and a song detailing the plan to steal from the company one penny at a time, and you have a musical.
Three To Tango. The plot would be perfect for a musical romantic comedy. I don't have any specific ideas for songs like I did with Office Space, but ever since I saw it I thought it would be great on stage.
There's probably others I could think of, but I'm blanking at the moment. Anyone else have suggestions?

An adaptation of 'Legally Blonde' is also being written.

What movies should be turned into Musicals
None, in my considered opinion.

Same here. It still seems weird when people break out into these talky songs in the middle of a dramatic scene.

Daredevil.
Starring Matthew Broderick as Matt Murdock and Nathan Lane as the Kingpin.

Then why the heck are either of you posting in this thread for?

The Godfather.
There was a Mad Magazine article a number of years ago about movies being turned into musicals and the Godfather was one of them. With such songs as "I like it here in the Mafia" (to the tune of "I like it here in America" from West Side Story) and "This is a Snack for a Mafia Boss" (to the tune of "These are a Few of My Favorite Things" from Sound of Music)

Call me crazy, but if you could really get Lane involved, I would see it. The guy is just funny. And he steals everything he does.

Because you asked.
Yes, but the question was aimed at people who actually like musicals. I'm assuming you don't like musicals at all (if I'm wrong please correct me), so of course you wouldn't want to see a musical based on a movie. I don't like wrestling (I'm not saying you do, because I don't know if you do or not, I'm just using it as an example), but I don't think wrestling should be done away with. There are people who like wrestling, so they should be allowed to enjoy it. I also don't go into threads about wrestling and post that there shouldn't be wrestling.

Did I post that there shouldn't be musicals? No I didn't. (But if I had, that would, in fact, have been a perfectly valid response to the thread's question.)
Although I am not a fan of musicals per se, I have no desire to see them banned. However, I am tired of movies (particularly popular but creatively pedestrian movies like Footloose and the Full Monty) being adapted into musicals, because I take it as indicative of a certain creative bankruptcy in a part of the performing arts (theater) that historically has been among the most creative and innovative. It's just one more instance of too many of the creative arts (theater, fiction writing/publishing, recorded music) de-emphasizing pursuit of real creative goals and adopting Hollywood's bottom-line approach.
Better?
For future reference, you should expect that when you put out an open call for opinions that you run a high risk of getting some that don't jibe with yours.

Well if you had explained all that in your first post I wouldn't have objected actually, because your adding to the discussion, but in your first post all you did was say that there should be no musicals based on movies without explaining why.

I didn't feel any need to explain why until you asked. Just because you didn't agree with what you thought I said (or misinterpreted it) does not make it an invalid or objectionable response to your question. It just makes it a response you disagree with.

Okay, this is the last thing I'm going to say on the subject in this thread, because this is getting off topic. My response was just because I've been getting tired of people busting into threads about (for example) Harry Potter and saying, "Well I don't care because I hate Harry Potter." It doesn't add to the thread, it kind of derails the thread.

They're doing a Princess Bride musical? That's so kick ass! That's another I have thought would make a good musical.

Y'know this got me thinking. How much do you want to bet that if Mel Brooks actually does turn Young Frankenstein into a Broadway Musical, that Mathew Broderick will play Dr. Fredrick Frankenstein and Nathan Lane will play Igor.

There are three or four Frankenstein musicals out there. They all have in common the fact that they suck.

It only derails the thread if people jump all over them for expressing negative opinions about Harry Potter, opinions which (A) they have every right to hold and express, and (B) can and frequently do add to a discussion, as long as people are actually willing to discuss rather than argue or carp.
Case in point: If you hadn't made a point of rather snarkily asking why Shellhead and I were posting in your thread if we didn't like musicals, the odds are I wouldn't have had anything else to say on the subject. And when I did explain my position, rather than focusing on the substance of what I wrote (some pretty good grist for discussion, vis-à-vis the creative legitimacy of adapting movies into musicals), you continued to complain about how people posting negative comments on an open forum pisses you off. Emphasis on the word open.
Something to consider for the future.
This is the last thing I'm going to say on the subject.

The Godfather.
I don't know if you were trying to be funny, but I think the themes in Godfather would make a great serious musical, or even an opera. Family, betrayal, murder. Hell yeah. Not Gilbert & Sullivan, but practically Richard Wagner.
Legends of the Fall is another awesome movie that would be a sweet opera.
More lighthearted fair might be "Bruce Almighty" as a musical. Something about that flick would just sing.

There actually was an Off Broadway musical of Carrie. A friend of mine in High School saw it. It was pretty campy apparently. And one of the other movies into musicals that was in that Mad Magazine article I mentioned was JAWS.

It was also an enormous financial disaster and closed after (checks) five performances.

'Carrie' was on Broadway, not off-Broadway. It was not intentionally campy, it was just so bad that it came off that way. The musical style was cheesy 80's pop, more appropriate for the movie 'Footloose' or 'Flashdance' in most cases when dealing with the students and gothic melodrama for the scenes with Carrie and her mother (these scenes are actually effective, they're just surrounded by dreck.)
It was written by pop songwriters who didn't know how to compose a score and even though producers and actors bailed from it in tryouts like they were on the 'Titanic,' it still somehow made it to Broadway for now-legendary five day run.

I've never seen any of them. One of the problems that most Frankenstein movies have, is that they've strayed far from the original story. I'd like to do a far more faithful adaptation, and get a score by someone like Sondheim.

I'll second that motion.
I'd also to love see a Spaceballs musical as well as an Elvira one, and one of these days I hope to see the Evil Dead musical.
