View Full Version : What happened to StoneGold?

I normally don't ask a bunch of questions when posters get banned. I understand we lost Rosie and Converge last night and I have a pretty good idea why. This morning, however, I noticed that StoneGold has been "banned" and it depresses me to no end.
Does anyone know what happened? More importantly, is this permanent or temporary? I'm not expecting anyone to have to defend their decision, but when a poster with his history turns up banned, all the mods know that questions are going to be coming down the pike.

Sometimes there's a little info. on the person's public profile. Not so in this case, apparently.

I don’t know what going on about those guys but it’s against the rules talking about someone who has been banned because they can’t appear and defend themselves. Anyway most bans are temporary so it’s a good chance we will see those guys again.

Its not against the rules to ask what has happened to a poster with over 12,000 posts. I don't subscribe to the moderators owe us all the sordid details school, but you just don't ban a poster like StoneGold without a freaking peep.
If simply asking warrants me being banned, then so be it, I don't want to hang around here if that is the road this board is going down. I truly don't think it is, however, and I don't believe I am in any such danger. I just want to know what happened to one of my favorite posters and whether I'll see him again.

I too have my favorite members, and all of you know who you are, so I have empathy for your situation. This situation is very reminiscent of Jeffery Kramer. People were justifiably getting worked up that such a pillar of the community had been banned but when it was all said and done he was only gone for a week. I think a pm to a mod rather than bringing up this issue on a public forum like this is a much better way to go to find the answer you seek.
It was a 24-hour ban. Chill pills, people.

Whenever I see someone has been banned, I always look at their previous few posts, trying to figure out why. I couldn't see anything wrong with what StoneGold has been posting, so I guess whatever he did for his banning was deleted. This doesn't really help much.
I wonder what happened to him too, though.

I always assume that if it's the first time I've seen the word "BANNED" under their name, then it's a temp. Obviously, there are those who can't or won't accept a temp and make it permanent immediately. I figure if they don't come back within the week, it turned permanent, either in fact or in essence.

Have you guys ever thought of putting something like T.BANNED to denote a temporary ban in this type of situation? Or do the powers that be like to use the concern as crowd control? I'm not being flip with that question, I had a judge once who used to chew attorney's new assholes when their clients were acting up just so the next ones wouldn't piss him off.

Lately, the supermods have gotten into the habit of putting a brief message in the poster's signature signaling that it's a temp ban. It wasn't done in StoneGold's case, but these things aren't hard and fast rules and the supermod in question either forgot to do so or he's not in the habit of doing so. It's always the first thing to check and if they don't display a signature in their posts, it'll still show up when you click on their profile.
As for putting "BANNED" in your user title: don't do that. We don't like it when you do that.

I agree and I thought something similar when he first posted that, but I'm thinking he meant that one shouldn't EXPECT to ban such a poster without a peep from "the gallery," so to speak. I agree with that, too.
The reasons range from simple curiosity to nosiness to practicality.

I can see that, but when I first read Boldido's post, especially the part about "not banning a poster like StoneGold without a peep" it reads more like the peep should be coming from the Mod's, not other posters.

Post-count implies that someone has been here a long time, or participated a great deal, or both.
If I walk away or am banned from this site, few would notice (I don't post much, and post little of real value - mostly "me too's" and "hey, have you read/seen this" threads).
However, if TCJohnson, Ian Boothby or Kurt Busiek were to suddenly fall silent, people would notice, wonder why and then question the "banned" status.
"Post-count" is just easier to post than "esteemed member", I imagine.

BINGO!!! I agree that moderators can ban whomever they want for whatever they want regardless of that poster's longevity or post count. Keep in mind, however that although its their sandbox, if no one wants to play in it, its just a box with sand in it rather than something unique and fun. If someone who has been around forever is gone all of a sudden, I also think its unreasonable to expect that noone would ask where they went. Our mods aren't unreasonable and answered that concern pretty quickly. What I have noticed is that they want to avoid the details behind the banning and I think I have respected that concern. The mods shouldn't have to defend a banning or discuss the sordid details, but its only right they address it.
I don't think it is unreasonable to suggest, however, that someone who has been around a long time and has been a valuable member of the community should get more slack than someone who is brand new and starts shit from the get go. I think that's what happened when StoneGold got a 24hr ban vs. a permanent ban. That is the way the mods around here have handled things and for the most part, I find the mods on the boards I frequent to be pretty fair and reasonable. (Way to go Brian, Gail and Greg!!!)
I don't want to turn this into a "the mods are bad" thread, because it couldn't be further from the truth. If that's the impression I gave then I am sorry. I never intended anyone to draw such an inference. I think the mods have handled this really well.

There's probably mod etiquette (it certainly seems reasonable) that it's left to the mod who actually made the decision rather than someone else speaking for them. So then time zones and stuff enter into it.

If you view this place as a community, I'd think that we're expected to bond with each other, to some degree. I'd be curious about why you think a community shouldn't be informed when something "happens to" one of its members.
I'm not talking about a legal obligation here, just a courtesy that reflects the quality of the relationships in this community.
If someone's a negative influence (like a true "troll"), it'd be nice to know if we can expect that person to return, too. Obviously, we could wait a day or a week or a month, but if there are other, more convenient options, why not take advantage of them?

Matt and some other mods have made it amply clear that they don't think mods owe the CBR community at large any explanation for their actions and behavior, be it banning or otherwise. Asking for such more often than not gets threads closed.

Very well said West. I can see the policies behind not wanting to debate a banning or even for giving reasons for why someone was banned as those tend to invite a the aforementioned debate. I do think as you intimated, however, that the mods have a moral obligation to respect the members of the community that they moderate. It seems that most if not all share that same belief as it is reflected in their actions.
