View Full Version : Do the ungodly wealthy carry petty cash on them?

Do you think that the ungodly wealthy (i.e. Gates, Buffett, Trump, Saudi oil barons, etc.) carry petty cash on them when they're out in public? Sure, they have assets that are valued into the billions, but none of that matters if they're trying to get a Super Big Gulp at 7-11 or the latest issue of INFINITE CRISIS at the local comic store and they don't have a penny on them.

Of course it does; you don't want him coming back buying the place and firing everybody because you didn't give him his minty-swirl choco-orange slushie with a cherry on top because he lacked the pocket change would ya?

Yeah, I always carry at least a twenty.
Not all merchants take them.

there are still places that don't take debit cards?
I bet gates doesn't shop in those places.

Not all merchants take them.I haven't run into one that didn't in years.
Unless you're including drug dealers.
I usually don't carry any cash with me at all, instead using my EFTPOS/Debit card whenever possible. Never my credit card, though.

Don't they have "personal assistants" that do that sort of thing?

I bet Trump likes to carry an impressive roll of cash. The heft of it in his pocket probably makes him feel more confident and manly. And after that bankruptcy filing back in the 90's, he probably has some insecurities about money.

Back when I was a D.A., there were two defense attorneys, both high-profile guys, who would compare their .... bankrolls to one another, whenever they were around. Each one would pull out a wad of bills from his pocket and whoever had the smaller roll had to buy the coffee.
I hated those guys.

Good thing nobody I know ever saw that. There would be two unconcious defense attorneys with empty pockets at the coffee shop.

I don't think the uber-rich have any idea how much some basic items even should cost, let alone do they pay for them with cash. Most have their own shoppers do their purchasing for them and if they do buy anything, I'll bet it goes on a card or account without ever hearing a total.
I know I'd have a tough adjustment to living rich because I know for a fact that I can get new jeans for $25...I don't have to have my assistant pick up similar jeans on Rodeo Drive for $800. I'd still be a tightwad.

You can wipe it off, but dammit, I couldn't help myself. I feel the same way.
It's not just about whether you can afford it. It's about whether it's enough bang for your buck. So to speak.

Yeah. I wonder if the rich (especially those who grew up rich like Paris Hilton and have never lived what most of us would consider an average lifestyle) ever even bother with sundry items such as ballpoint pens, paper cups, shaving cream, boxes of crackers, blank writable CDs, etc. They must use this stuff from time to time like we "ordinary mortals" do, but I wonder if they procure it the same way that we do?

They don't procure these things the same way we do. I watched that first season of The Simple Life, and Paris Hilton was completely unaware of the existence of Wal-Mart until that show. And then she suddenly loved the place. Likewise, I remember that 1992 photo-op when Bush Senior went to the grocery store. He was amazed, because he had never seen those checkout scanners, nor even suspected their existence.

That might be more the effect of being a former President and being older than being wealthy.

My younger sister was an intern with a major fashion designer once upon a time. She was a gopher/designer/personal shopper/model helper/pet sitter rolled into one. If Ms. Designer wanted whatever, she'd send my sister off in her limo to go retrieve it.
I'm sure they carry all their usual cards, but who needs cash these days? I'm a regular middle class Jane Q. Public and I don't even carry paper money on me most days. If they don't take debit, they don't get my business.

Mostly nouveau riche buy $800 jeans. Those with old money don't waste it, that's why it's old money, smart people know how to accumulate it and make it last.
So yes, uber rich know what the value of a dollar is, you have to if you want to accumulate a lot of them. It's the newly rich and stupid that don't, such as a Jessica Simpson or some other type of mindless dimwit.
Besides, carry an American Express Black Card, it's a rarity but a favorite.

Warren Buffet lives here in my town in the Dundee area, he travels alot but he lives here. I drive past his neighborhood alot going to school or the store and such, I'm still surprised he doesn't live in the suburbs or a penthouse downtown. People have seen him at the Goodwill and other such places buying clothing, so I would say he still carries a couple of bills on him.

You ever get the urge to yell "MARGARITAVILLE!!!" at him and then run?
And yeah, I know, but I always used to confuse the names.

I don't think there is an explanation for her. She's an empty dress.
I think that it should be implied that absolutes shouldn't be inferred. I'm sure there's plenty of worthless, free spending heirs to incredible fortunes.

Somewhere, a network exec has brainstormed the next big show:
Celebrity Price is Right!
Only now with "confessionals" and location shoots to make it more "reality TVesque".
Somebody call VH1.

Yeah and his companies were seriously cashed up from Day One with multi-million dollar investments from his family and their friends.

Eh, I'm only upper middle class, and all I carry is two emergency 20's. I can't remember needing cash in months. Those Visa check cards are every bit as convenient as the commercials make them out to be, and even the fast food places around here take them.

One note: I'm Chinese-American and I live in a heavily Chinese-American community. Many Chinese-American merchants to this day don't accept credit cards, debit cards, or personal checks. Now I'm not sure if these merchants are trying to dodge taxes or what, but whatever the reason, a large number of Chinese-American merchants don't trust the system and prefer their money in tangible form (bills and coins). Mind you: this is a culture that prefers to keep cash in drawers at home rather than in a bank vault.

As much as I dislike both the original and the carbon copy, this is a bit of a distortion (http://www.snopes.com/history/american/bushscan.htm), much like the Gore "inventing the internet" thing.

I sure hope so. I'd like to turn a nice profit when I pistol-whip them on the street.
Of course, doing some freelance battery is nice too; the cash is just a fringe benefit.
