December 2, 2005 - Sad news for fans of Stephen King. The master of horror announced on his website that the highly-anticipated Dark Towers series would be delayed until February 2007. King's note also confirmed the series would be six issues, wrapping up in July 2007. A hardcover collection is expected to hit shelves in October 2007.

Dry your tears long enough to read the full notice from King's site.

"Stephen and Marvel have decided to push back the launch of the Dark Tower comic books to 2007. "Given the size of the project and all the creative talent involved, I want to give the Marvel series all the room to breathe it needs and deserves," said Stephen. "I've got so much else going on in 2006 - two novels coming out, CELL and LISEY'S STORY, and the work with John Mellencamp on 'Ghost Brothers of Darkland County.' The Marvel series is going to be a blast, and I want to have the time to enjoy it."

The 1st issue of the yet-to-be-named first arc of the Dark Tower comic series will be shipping in February 2007. The last issue of this six-issue series will be shipping in July 2007. The first hardcover collection will be shipping in October 2007.

Delayed for a year? Ouch! It's better off like this I guess. I know I wouldn't want this series to end up like Secret War.

Agreed, and from the sound of it, it's King who has decided to postpone the project, not Marvel, which somehow makes it bite less.

In any case, it gives Marvel yet another year to wind up the hype machine.

I'm glad to see the posters here are being reasonable about it. Over at NEWSARAMA they're bitching and complaining about the news like Marvel mugged them and stole from them.

The fact that King wants to wait til he clears some of the stuff off his plate puts to rest the speculation that he wasn't really involved with the series other than throwing story ideas out. And while the posters at the other site are also talking about "all the hype" behind the King books, I personally didn't think there was that much all things considered. This extra time will allow for all parties to be able to concentrate on doing the best job they can. In the end it's better than just putting something out for the sake of simply doing it.

Posters at Newsarama over-reacting? Nahhhhh. . .couldn't be! ;)

That's pretty much how I feel about it as well. With a high profile writer like King doing a Marvel comic, there's a significant chance that people who don't normally read comics checking the project out. If Marvel promotes the book in the right venues, projects like this one have the potential to bring much-needed readership to the medium we love.

It'll be worth it.

Plus, how cool is it that Marvel actually compensated for delays BEFORE releasing an issue? I'd say it's a step in the right direction.

As long as King is actually writing it, I'll be happy. If you look at the original press releases, nowhere does it actually specifically say that he'll be the one writing the actual comics.
