Okay, so in half the titles Fury is on the outs with SHIELD, he's off in hiding or something. I believe this is true in New Avengers, Daredevil, Wolverine, and some others.

However in other titles (Hulk, Captain America) he's still in charge.

Now, I'm all for loose continuity, and not requiring titles to acknowledge each others' events...but how the same characters can be used in totally contradictary roles is beyond me.

And this isn't the first time it's happened recently. There was Strucker, Viper, and now Silver Samurai.

I think it's a general decision on Marvel's part that they value individual story over general universe continuity and it also seems to go along with what I view as the weakening of Marvel Editorial standards. The House Of M miniseries really emphasized that for me - story aside, structurally it was a MESS and seemed almost completely unedited.

I read on Newsrama that "Secret War" will clear this up.

As for WHEN it comes out...

Yeah, the reason this is a mess is because the timelines are all screwed up, but that's nothing new in the MU.

I think the original idea was to do a pre/post-SECRET WAR thing and have everything happening before feature Fury in charge and everything after feature someone else. But when SECRET WAR turned into a huge disaster, things kind of fell to pieces. So now some writers are still following the original plan and some writers are sticking with Fury.

Or at least, that's my take on it.

I'd imagine we'll wind up with a situation where Fury is out everywhere and we'll just ignore the exact chronology of the transition period.

Matt, for a more entertaining look at Nick Fury, check out this site. I believe you will enjoy yourself there if you haven't seen it yet.
