Who do you consider to be the best Marvel writers today?
And why?

agrich

Bendis, because he actually writes stuff that's entertaining, intelligent, and original.

Mark Millar, because Ultimates is one of my favorite comics ever.

Milligan, although I admit I don't know if he's writing anything right now; I'm thinking of X-Force and X-Statix.

Whedon, because Astonishing X-Men is brilliant and so is he.

The guy doing Young Avengers, whose name I've totally spaced right now, my apologies.

There would have been a time I'd mention Peter David, but Captain Marvel is the last thing he did I cared much for.

1. Dan Slott- He is putting the "fun" back into marvel's funny books.

2. B K Vaughan- His Ultimate X-men run was even better than Bendis or Millar's run.

3. Nicieza- He just knows how to write good action packed superhero comics.

4. Ed Brubaker- His Cap is great, and his X-Men:Deadly Genesis is the best written X-stuff in years.

ed brubaker - captain america is probably the best book out. books of doom and deadly genesis seem cool so far.

dan slott - thing, she-hulk and gla all rock. all his books are funny.

brian k vaughan - ultimate x-men is the best x-men book out, runaways is great.

fabian nicieza - cable/deadpool is ok, but new thunderbolts is one of the best straight superhero books out.

joss whedon - writing the best non-ultimate x-men stories in about a decade

peter david - really looking forward to him doing his own thing on friendly neighborhood spider-man after the other is over. looking forward to x-factor too, his old x-factor is my favorite work of his.

dan way - on the come up. his wolverine, hulk and nighthawk have all been good.

robert kirkman - marvel team-up is one of the best books, can't wait for his ult. x-men and marvel zombies.

Ed Brubaker - He got me reading Captain America. Plus, Deadly Genesis has got me hooked.

Dan Slott - Whenever I read his stuff, I know I'm gonna have fun!

Robert Kirkman - See Dan Slott

Brian Bendis - Has a lot of critics, but I am not one of them. I am always entertained with his stories.

Mark Millar - I've become a Millar-whore when it comes to his Marvel books. Great stuff!

Joss Whedon - I've never followed any of the core X-books (Avengers fan), but I must say, I loved Astonishing X-Men, and I can't wait for the next volume.

Daniel Way - I am enjoying Nighthawk, and I will be picking up the next Wolverine arc.

Allan Heinberg - Surprised the hell out of me with how great Young Avengers was. He has a bright future in comics.

Fabian Nicieza - Cable/Deadpool rules. 'Nuff said.

Nothing new to add, mainly because I feel the same way the other posters here do. However, I'll add mine anyway:

Dan Slott: fun and funny without condescending to or patronizing the characters, and with just the right pinch of action. His comics seem to move at a pretty rapid pace, too.

Ed Brubaker: He makes Captain America and Books of Doom very intriguing comic books. The content seems (though it's not) politically-tinged; his books focus more on character rather than action (though he doesn't skip on the latter), but his character moments are never dull nor monotonous (there doesn't seem to be any replicated panels); his characters are serious-minded without being morose and gritty without being grim. His keeps his pace steady and lets the drama/suspense boil to a steam.

Fabien Nicieza: best action-comics writer Marvel's got. Both Thunderbolts and Cable/Deadpool move at a rapid pace, with (what seems like) at least one monster fight an issue. He handles multiple characters well by contrasting the major and even the subtle differences among his players. He knows when to play up the humor (Cable/Deadpool), and he knows when to introduce subplots without letting them overwhelm the main plot while keeping both moving the book forward rather than dragging the book down. Also, he seems to revel in these super heroes as super heroes.

Robert Kirkman: In his Marvel Team-Up, he seems to bridge the gap between Slot and Nicieza. I wish we'd see more of his work in the regular Marvel Universe.

Allan Heinberg: His writing seems a combination of Brubaker and Nicieza. His Young Avengers book has some unabashedly serious super hero action in every issue, while his tone is a bit more serious than playful. YA reads like what Avengers used to read like when Stern and Thomas were writing them.

...and here's one nobody's mentioned yet...

Tony Bedard: His Exiles is one wacky book. Kudos to Bedard for managing to make sense out of these wild, universe-hopping, two/three issue arc plots. Each issue/arc seems cohesive, and all are definitely fun (Red Ronin! Fin Fang Foom! New Universe!), and he never seems to muck up the continuity in a book that seems ripe for upteen continuity mistakes every issue.

Tony Bedard

and Nunzio DeFillipis and Christina Weir: I can't stress enough how much these guys rocked on New X-Men

Brain Michael Bendis- Depends on what he is writing really...sometimes he can god a truely brillant and origianl book E.g. Alias and Daredevil but other times he just writes for pure entertainment.

Fabian- Is a master writer he can blaance action, comedy, and drama on a regulary basis in any books he writes. Not to mention he keeps his title nicely placed and writes great characters..and his plotting skills are amazing he can plot things way down the line and knows how to set them up.

Garth Ennis- He knows how to do a great adult dark story...he strength seems to be creating origianl and interesting supporting characters for the titles he works on. Like Ghost Rider and Punisher..but sometimes he can get caught up in the supportingf cast and lose focus of the main character. But still he knows how to write a good story.

Peter David- My personal fav writer the man is GOD...he make me picking up anything even if the cocnept seems boring or its about cahracter I don't particualry like...he knows how to write good stories and he always does no matter what...

Ed Brubaker- Captain America..nuff said oneo f the best books Marvel puts out this is the only thing i've read from him..but he all of his books are liek this than WOW. he actually got me interested in a cahracter I always found uninteresting. Now that takes talent!

Joss Whedon- In an era where most of the X-books are really broing and convulted he brings a refreshing look at the X-Men in astonishign with his signature witty dialogue and hsi character inaction. Its good to see that X-Men can be enjoyable again.

Bru - Cap, and soon DD, are rocking Old School Marvel

Millar - The Ultimates is gangbanging good and he brings a dangerous level of irreverance to his work

JMS - THE best writer at The House, IMO. Love everything he does from Supreme Power, Strange, and his Spidey is the best ever IMO

Sleeper
11-29-2005, 03:54 PM
Priest - the guy knows his Marvel history and plays with and around the sandbox while at the same time delivering great stories, as opposed to ditching continuity altogether for the sake of crash banging.

CaptainAwesome
11-29-2005, 04:56 PM
Peter David-x factor all the way
Nice...Niz...The guy who writes Cabel and Deadpool
Brubaker-Like his cap.
Joss Whedon-Astonishing

Babylon23
11-29-2005, 07:35 PM
Fabien Nicieza: One of the few "old school" writers left at Marvel. Almost non-stop action punctuated by nice character moments and interesting subplots. No decompression here! Thunderbolts is the best team book at Marvel at the moment.

Ed Brubaker: Cap has becoming an intriguing book under his pen.

Chris Claremont: I know I'll come under fire for this one, but CC is back in the x-universe handling character that he knows like the back of his hand. He's really hitting his stride at the moment with Excalibur and Uncanny.

Peter David: A great writer, although I haven't been interested in much of his Marvel output recently. I was interested in Spider-Man until I found out the 1st issue was part of a multi-part crossover. However, X-Factor has me excited about a new Marvel book, which hasn't happened in a while.

Other than that, I like Bendis when he's writing crime fiction (like his run on Daredevil), JMS on books that aren't Spider-Man, and Priest when he's actually writing titles that aren't getting cancelled.

Yeah, except he's not doing anything for them currently, sadly.

Seriously though, while there are a couple of people I'd disagree with being the best writers, pretty much the cream of the crop have been mentioned. Just wanted to add an underdog or two.

Zeb Wells is a very underrated writer, especially when it comes to comedy and character bits.

And I don't know if he counts as a Marvel writer exactly, but goddamn, did David Lapham's DareDevil/Punisher mini rock my socks off!!!

That and my continual pimping of Daniel Way. The man has us all by the balls, just most of us don't know it yet.

Although I wouldn't put Claremont on the current Best of Marvel list.

Long time Daredevil fan - I put the Bendis/Maleev run up against Miller's run

Long time X-Men fan .... even when I'm not into it, I just can't drop it.

Brubaker - His Cap is the best book there is, and Deadly Genesis and Books of Doom are great! Looking forward to his Daredevil.

Slott - Great humor combined with old school. I really have no respect for writers that pad their stories for the 6 issue TPB, and Slott stands for everything a comic book writer should be, as he doesn't like that garbage, either.

Joss Whedon - His writing skills are very noticeable on Astonishing X-Men.

JMS - His stuff is always solid, and sometimes spectacular.

Millar - Personally, I think he's a jerk with a self inflated opinion of himself, but I do enjoy his writing very much.

Ed Brubaker, Joss Whedon, Mark Millar, Brian Bendis, and Allan Heinberg

Ed Brubaker - He is the next big star in Marvel, actually i might like him more than Bendis. He made Cap cooler, although i still dont dig the Winter Soldier/Bucky stuff, he must stay dead. He rox on Deadly Genesis and I'm dying to read Daredevil.

Dan Slott - He actually makes comics entertaining (what they are suppossed to be) and i'm waiting for the day he writes Spider-Man.

Robert Kirkman - He rox im expecting him on UXM

Brian Bendis - Above all the Avengers and USM, his best work is undoubtedly Daredevil with Maleev. He is a genius in crime/noir more than in team books.

Mark Millar - i loved him and JRJr. in the Enemy of the STate and also with Hitch in Ultimates 2

Joss Whedon - Well, i liked Astonishing and I'm waiting for Serenity movie.

Allan Heinberg - He made the YA likeable, arguably one of my favorite team books.

Fabian Nicieza - He made Deadpool one of my fav characters and Cable an almost godly figure. Plus he used The Silver Surfer and kicked Cable's ass.

Ed Brubaker - for Cap and X-Men: DG, both awsome storylines, Ed keeps you guessing.
Joss Whedon - Joss just seems to "Get" the X-Men, and he give each character a time to shine.
Fabian Nicieza - for writing one of the funniest and wittiest comic books to date. "Chun Chun Chun"

Garth Ennis - Honorable Mention for Ghost Rider, one of the top 5 Marvel books...in my book.

Great list!

I also like JMS and would add him for his Spidey run and his Supreme Power.

Peter David... the man can WRITE! Even his dud's (which are few and far between) are better than most other guys' stuff.

Chris Claremont. The man rules the X Universe. I think it's popular to rag on the guy but his most recent X run has been so enjoyable.

Mark Millar I think is Marvel's best writer and is my favorite writer right now at Marvel.

I wish him, Ed Brubaker, and Peter David were writing the X-books right now and Claremont being the Editor. David doing Astonishing, Millar Uncanny, and Brubaker regular X-men, that would so kick ass.

a few more i should add to my list...

alan heinberg, zeb wells, sean mckeever.

mark millar is kinda hit and miss to me. ultimates is still awesome, but besides that, everything he's done since, oh, the end of his ultimate x-men run, has been pretty mediocre at best.

11-30-2005, 04:51 PM
Dan Slott - He "gets" the Marvel Universe like no other. Has a great sense of humour, and his comics are just plain enjoyable to read

Fabian Nicieza - Cable/Deadpool is one of the most fun comics out there and Thunderbolts is the best superhero team book published in the last 5 years.

BK Vaughn - Runaways is spectacular and Mystique was great too. The man can plot a great story and he understands the fine art of making each character distinct.

Allan Heinberg - The man took a potentially disasterous premise in the Young Avengers and spun solid gold.

Daniel Way - Based on his amaxing Nighthawk mini, I am excited about Wolverine for the first time since he lost his adamantium.

Peter David - The man is still solid after all these years! He can effortlessly combine drama and humour into one fascinating package. Can't wait for X-Factor!

Chris Claremont - I'm not gonna explain it, because quite frankly you either love CC or you don't. I do, and I can't wait to see where he takes us next!

Tony Bedard is someone to add to my list because I love what he is doing with Exiles, a title that was feeling a little played out until he came onboard.

Oh and I want to go on record as saying that Christopher Priest is one of the best writers ever. I follow his work religiously. If he ever writes for Marvel again he will be at the top of my list!

Brian K Vaughan- Runaways is the best thing I've read in a while.
Ed Brubaker - I've never been a Captain America fan until now.
Garth Ennis - Punisher is right there along with Brubakers Cap.
Mark Millar - There isn't anything I would change about the Ultimates.
Bendis - Just for Ultimate Spiderman

Robert Kirkman and Dan Slott are, in my opinion, the two best writers Marvel currently has. It's because they both have that old-school, fun flavor in their writing.

Also, they both seem to love the second-tier characters of Marvel that I grew up with.

Mark Millar- Because he's my favorite writer working today thanks to The Ultimates 2.0, Wolverine, and Marvel Knights Spider-Man. I'm looking forward to the rest of Ultimate Fantastic Four,

Brian Michael Bendis- Even his worst works are pretty good. And there's a lot of better material available. From him. Powers. New Avengers. House of M. Ultimate Spider-Man. Daredevil. The Pulse. Secret War.

Dan Slott- She-Hulk was good, can't wait for the first Thing trade, and Spider-Man/ Human Torch was possibly the best Human Torch story ever.

Brian K Vaughan- His Ultimate X-Men run was consistently better than I expected.

You can list names and the reasons for your like or dislike, or you can just name them and name the book that made you fall in love (or in hate) or just name the creators whose work you love and hate (Don't forget these are all opinions...leave the flames at the door. :D

Artists whose work I love:
Bryan Hitch -(Ultimates is amazing)
Stuart Immonem -He is doing fantastic work on Nextwave)
George Perez -I was never a fan until I saw his Avengers revamp with
Busiek. Brilliant work
Juan Bobillo-His unique work on She-Hulk made the book a million times better than what it really was.

Artists whose work I strongly dislike:
Rob Lefeld-Nuff said.
Scott Kolins-Not really feeling his ink-less art.
Jae Lee There's something very unappealing about his pencils, they just turn me off.

Writers whose work I love:
Warren Ellis- Nextwave is simply an avalanche of crazy, wildly inventive fun. And it has lots of protein.
Gail Simone- She consistently churns solid books, and she understands the genre like very few do.
Ed Brubaker The best mainstream superhero comic book writer doing Marvel work today, as far as I'm concerned.
Sean McKeever-Underappreciated talent. Briliiant writer.
Kurt Busiek- A Classic, in every sense of the word. You don't get much better than that.

Writers whose work I strongly dislike:
Reginald Hudlin-After Priest's brilliant Black Panther, it's amazing how bad this new BP run is.
Rob Liefeld-I know, easy target. But he inflicted too much pain on my brain, and I foolishly fell for the hoopla.
Dan Slott-Based on his She-Hulk and Thing, a very mediocre and incredibly overrated writer.
Daniel Way-I don't see what the big deal about his Wolverine is.

Straddling the fence:
Bendis- Some amazing work (Daredevil, Powers, Spider-Woman:Origin), some really bad, overrated work (Ultimate Spider-Man, New Avengers, Secret War)
Allen Heinberg- His Young Avengers is ok...but I am still not entirely hooked. Maybe Wonder Woman will make me a fan.

What are your favorites and not-so-favorites?

Violently Apathetic
03-23-2006, 08:21 AM
Well...I'm skipping artists because I'm not overly familiar with them...

Writers whose work I love:
Ed Brubaker- Words cannot express
Brain K Vaughan- For both 'The Runaways' and (though it's Vertigo) Y: The Last Man.
Alan Heinberg- I love Young Avengers, the fact he took such a lame idea, made it workable and yet still allowed the characters to have fun with the inevitable lameness of the idea, is just wonderful.
Dan Slott- Sorry, Eric, I just can't agree. Slott's work may not be for everyone but I find it to be warm and full of gentle good humor.

Shout outs to Gail Simone and Kurt Busiek as well...

I don't really dislike any writers that come to mind...there are some I have a love/hate relationship with, like Millar and Bendis, but that's about it.

This thread is destined for trouble. So I'm going to give just the names, no quant little descriptors that many will disagree with, anyway...

Favorite Artists:
Too many to name, but these come to mind at the moment:
Norm Breyfogle
Steve McNiven
Ivan Reis
Mike Mignola
Brian Bolland
George Perez
Brian Hitch

Artists whose work I dislike:
Juan Bobillo
Some Bart Sears stuff
Liefeld
Trevor McCarthy
Eric Battle (or Brad Walker, I forget who did the Green Arrows I really hated)

Writers I enjoy:
Mark Millar on Ultimates (but I haven't liked anything else he's done)
Dan Slott
Christos Gage
Alan Moore
Grant Morrison
Kurt Busiek
Alan Heinberg
Shane McCarthy
old-school: Alan Grant, Roger Stern, J.M. DeMatteis (on Spidey and Cap), and Michelinie.
Gail on Villains United
Chris Priest
Geoff Johns-only on JSA, Avengers
Devin Grayson when she writes Batman

I like Bru, but his comics are good solid reads, nothing I would put in my all-time list.

Least favorite:
Bendis, Bendis, Bendis !!!
some Millar stuff
Austen, except for the first War Machine series, and first couple story arcs on Uncanny X-Men
Johns, except for pre-Rebirth JSA stories, Hawkman, and Avengers
Hudlin
Daniel Way
Howard Mackie
A.J. Lieberman
Gail on BoP, Superman
Devin Grayson on Nightwing

I am going to give the Artist a skip too because I usually judge an artist by how their style works with the tone of a story and not on its own merits. If the art doesn't match the story that is as much the editors fault as the artist.

As for writers.

Love
Slott - Can't get enough of his work. The stories feel like the best of the old school yet the dialogue feels fresh.
Bendis - I am not sure I have ever read anything by him that I didn't at least enjoy
Millar - A master at what he does, gritty realistic stories
JMS - He really is just a good writer.

Dislike
Nicieza - I suppose I just don't like his style, plus, his recent Thunderbolts development with Songbird/Zemo irked me. Talk about coming out of the blue (actually I hope it came out of the purple, if you get my drift).
Aguire-Sacassa - It's not that I always dislike his writing, it is just that he is the MOST inconsistent writer I have ever come across. His books are, for me, either "wow that was incredible" or "gee, how many trees died for THIS".
Claremont - I have always felt meh towards Claremont, but his FF run was OK.

Jim Lee and the Kubert brothers defined dynamic comic art for me with their Marvel work.

Mark Millar's Ultimates & Ultimate X-Men and Garth Ennis' Punisher made Marvel Comics cool again for twenty-somethings like me who had previously moved on to edgier stuff from other publishers.

I don't outright love or hate any writer. Because for every writer I really like, Claremont for instance, I can point several things by him I don't like. And even with writers who I think are really sucking it up right now, Milligan on X-men, I can look at other works by him in the past such X-Statix that I liked.

After more thought I came up with one writer and one artist whom I've yet to be disappointed by.

Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon. Their work on Preacher is the all time pinnacle of comic book greatness IMO. And their run together on Punisher is equally good. Apart, neither is as great. Punisher has lacked something since Dillon left. And Dillon's work in other places, while still good, just isn't as fun without Ennis's story to go with it.

I couldn't agree more with that. Preacher and punisher were great, it seems impossible (for now) to enjoy another series they work on as I enjoyed these two titles...

I can usually find something to like in work by creators I'm not crazy about, and even my faves lay an egg once in a while. The only ones I can think of that never really produced anything I cared to look at for Marvel are the Image gang: Liefeld, McFarlane, and Larsen.

Can't remember who did the art of Wolverine before Francis Yu, but it was horrid.
Any and everyone involved in the "Marvel Manga" phase a few years back, that was the second worst idea EVER.

That guy is cool.

Writers:
Ed Brubaker: His Daredevil is already on par with Bendis and he has only written one arc. Before the reboot of his title, Cap always seemed dull to me, but the moment I read that book, it became a must read. I'm very escited for his Iron Fist and Crminal books. His Uncanny is very good but the Vulcan standalones are not my type.
Brian K. Vaughan: His run in UXM made me care for the characters and it was a brilliant mix of action and characterization. Runaways has been a favorite for me since it began and I'm very sad he's leaving the book. His outside work is even better, with brilliant books like Y and Ex Machina.
Mark Millar: Mark has become a favorite of mine because of his style of writing. The Ultimates, his run on Wolverine and Spider-Man, and also Civil War are all excellent reads.
Neil Gaiman: What else can I say that hasnt been said before? He is one of the greatest there have been, he is a genius of storytelling, callling him a great writer is understood. The Eternals with JRJr. is one of the best books out there.
Allan Heinberg: Young Avengers is my favorite Marvel book, maybe cuz I'm a teenager, maybe cuz it's a great book overall. I no longer care for the delays because I know I'm getting a great story.
Joss Whedon
Fabian Nicieza
Greg Pak
Peter David
