I'm one of the group who doesn't think Family Guy has gone downhill since its renewal, but their treatment of Meg is simply getting worse and worse.

The girl has her faults (she occasionally acts selfish, and pretty self-centered), but out of them all, she's pretty much the only person I could honestly say I wouldn't mind being related to. Even after they'd violated her privacy, threatened her with bodily harm, shown her absolutely no sympathy in moments of stress and pressure, stole from her, refused to rescue her from lethal situations that were their fault, called her a prositute...


...she still sticks up for them. Like refusing to fire her incompetent, lazy, good-for-nothing father when he did nothing but goof around, and she would get a promotion out of the act.


The only good thing I can say is that, slowly, Meg is beginning to stand up for herself when they do this crap.

She gets dumped on more, but not to such a degree that it's completely out of the range of the others. Carl: Half the time he deserves what he gets. Mostly because he did something so stupid it was bound to backfire, or because he was being a dick.

Butters: Hasn't had the sheer volume, and on a number of occasions has gotten revenge for it/actually come out on top.

Zoidberg: If you go searching around, you'll find that whenever his mistreatment is discussed, I'm there defending him as well. Secondly, Meg has a series that is still putting out new shows, and thus constantly being put on my mind. Zoidberg won't have any new appearances till 2008 (when the series is coming back to Comedy Central).


As for 'not out of the range of the others'? Meg is the *only* member of the family that the others will consistently pick on together, no matter what the plot point of the episode is. The others might have half the family against them because of something that is happening in a particular story-line, but it comes nowhere close to Meg. Even the neighbors openly acknowledge it.

-Helped Shake dump vat of oil and fried cow leftovers into the forest, despite there being a place that would take care of the stuff just down the road. Which is why the trees went after him.

-The 'diet' parasite Frylock straight out told him was dangerous, and likely a dumb idea after he read the label. Carl ignored him, and paid the price.

-What happened to him with both the clown disease and the rainbow machine are due to his own actions.

-Rudy wouldn't have shot him if he hadn't been in the house in the first place, trying to call the phone sex lines without getting charged for it.

-Himself only encourages some of the dumb stuff they do, by hooking them up with illegal contacts, organs, etc in various episodes. "I know a guy".


And like Butters, there have been episodes where he's kicked their butts for doing what they did. Heck, one of the first episodes had him wailing on Master Shake with a tire iron.

Agreed, character development is fun. I like the fact that Mr. Garrison has gone from self-hating gay homophobe to verry very gay man who has a teaching assistant who is into S&M to homophobic "straight" woman. Same with Butters, he went from constantly being dumped on to actually getting revenge on people.

Even Meg gets some development, just not much at all. She's only gone through having friends to being unpopular to having friends again. Not much of a development in character.

I don't think her becoming a man in the future counts as development as that's a long ways away (timeline-wise in Family Guy).

Actually, in the final year, didn't Zoidberg outgrow much of the joke characterness, though admittedly much of it was his own fault given his poor capabilities as a doctor.
