I liked it as well. But is one messed up movie.

The scene where he chows down on the live squid is disgusting.

Same reaction, here. Liked the scene where the hero, armed only with a hammer, takes on the hallway-full of henchmen. A clueless colleague screened the film as part of his Korean Film Series, resulting in first-run-Exorcist-style reactions from a good number of unsuspecting undergraduates.

Check out this trailer of the unauthorised indian remake of oldboy. ;)

Leave it to Bollywood to rip off a good movie (be it asian or western)

See Yogo I told you Old Boy was a great movie. Me and Barrios have been vindicated by a top ten Wizard writer. A Korean Greek epic tragedy is one hell of a good time.

Caught that at the Toronto Film Festival last year - it was one of those movies that had a very visceral effect. Those are always some of my favorites to see, particularly in that environment.

Drags on a little too long but time well spent. I'd read something about a US remake but don't recall who they had starring in it.

Jane.

It's written an directed by the Better Luck Tomorrow crew & produced by Vertigo Ent./Universal.

Meaning as soon as it hits theatres, it's cookie cutter garbage.

Ah, that doesn't sound good. Well, if it gets more people to see the original...

Oh, and if you're looking for another import to watch check out the eerie film Kairo aka Pulse, which Craven is remaking.

A really disappointing movie for me. 1 hour of plot and maybe 10 minutes of bloodshed stretched into about 2 hours of wannabe avant-garde nonsense. By the time they revealed the whole reason behind what was going on, I wasn't even sure I cared. And once I found out...well, that just made the movie even worse. I've seen much better Korean films, much better revenge flicks, much better....well, everything. 2 hours of my life that I want back.

I watched Sympathy For Mr Vengence and thought it was near perfect, brilliantly written, fabulously acted and had a feeling of can't look/can't look away.

As such I eargly powered up Old Boy (same director) and it just feels *empty* in comparison. I've tried to get through it twice now and am genuinely struggling. Great lead actor (you have to be to eat a live octupus!) and some interesting moments (chair...back of a hammer..masking tape...!!!) but... ?! I want to like it damn it!

I kinda know what you're feeling. While I liked it, it didn't live up to the hype. It's so relentlessly downbeat, I don't know if I could sit through it twice. That's also why I'm afraid to watch Mr Vengeance, but I've heard so much about it I pretty much have to.

I just saw it yesterday on DVD, and loved it. The badass battle in the hallway was very nice, especially because it feels like a single shot from beginning to end--I know it isn't, but it isn't one of those American hack jobs with three cuts a second that make it impossible to see what's going on.

I had the big ending revelation figured out pretty early on because they telegraphed it--

When the sushi chef says, "Do I know you? You look familiar," it became obvious to me who she was, though all of the machinations that led to that point weren't quite so obvious.

And the ending. I'll echo Gail's YIKES! I could describe that as the hero gets the girl he loves in the end to a friend and lull him or her into a false sense of security, though. Hee hee.

I should have figured out the big revelation but didn’t because I have a problem estimating ages of everyone once they hit their twenties especially Asians. I would have pegged the woman to be in her twenties and the protagonist in his thirties

Gah, SJ made me watch it about 8 months ago, and it still gives me the heebie jeebies whenever I think about it.

But yes, the hallway scene remains one of my favourite fight scenes, especially when he spends half of it with a knife lodged in his back.

The hammer-teeth thing creeped me out.

Just... gah. That's a hella mind-fuck movie.

It freaked me out!!! It still does. I watched it, with one eye open most of the time, and by the end.................eeeeeggghhhhh!!!! No!!!!!

I think it's based on a comic and there was even a rumour of doing a western version of this!!!! So yet another remake for the Western audiences masses who can't work out how to watch a film with subtitles, or simply won't go and see a foreign film, ala Grudge, Dark water, The Ring, etc etc.

Incredibly twisted altogether. A real mind (expletive).

Dammit, not again. I HATE it when people can't come up with an original idea, so they resort to a western remake of a fantastic eastern movie. I saw the Japanese version of The Grudge, and then I stupidly watched the Buffy version. RUINED.

This happens all the time. At least The Grudge was honest about unlike people like George Lucas who steal and refuse to give credit to the original creators.

In this movie filled with memorable scenes, I think the one that's imprinted the deepest is near the end, in the elevator (don't want to give too much away) and the guy says something like, "Oh, what joy will I live for now?"

It was a great movie all the way through, but the entire last fifth or so of the film took it up to an even higher level, for me - including the epilogue.

The movie Departed was also based on the Eastern 3 parter movie "Internal Affairs"

Haven't seen Internal Affairs but I found Departed quite good.

I enjoyed Old boy. I also figured out the ending with the sushi scene too. There were plot holes in the movie however, but it didn't exactly bothered me or take away from the coolness of the movie.

I actually like Lady Vengeance better though. Its by the same director. I didn't like Mr. Vengeance that much.

It took me a long time to actually sit through it, not because it was scary or violent, but my initial thought was absolute disappointment at the side of Sympathy For Mr Vengeance – which is just plain perfection.

I got the Park Chan-Wook box set and the extras for Old Boy are what lead me back to watching it again and enjoying it. Seeing the maverick film making the director chooses, really filming on the fly and being happy with what he’s shot very quickly and being open to ideas. Plus Ming Sik-Choi is a vegetarian – so it makes those amazing Octopus scenes all the more incredible.

To be honest I hated sympathy for Mr. Vengeance. The third vengeance movie is okay. Oldboy however is just pure perfection. It's funny how we both can view the same movies but come away with totally different experiences.

The manga, on which the movie is based, is also very good though it tends to drag a bit. It's still coming out from Dark Horse, I think.

I’ve just seen a stunning piece of hillbilly journalism in the Daily Mail, where they try to pin the Virginia Tech massacre on the fact that the nutter involved liked the Korean film ‘Old Boy’ which “seemingly scripted the events of that day”. The tenuous picture link being the bad guy holding a gun to his head towards the end of the movie.

It's been a while since i've seen the film,. but I don't remember a huge amount of gunfire. Now I could see it if he'd gone in with a hammer... but.

*sigh*

That would have required research.

Of course now the middle classes who think the're the upper classes will just plain adopt that as their own opinion.

And as Warren Ellis once said, "You're only entitled to an informed opinion"

Suddenly i'm reminded of how the Daily Mail they went for Brasseye after the genius 'pedophile special', missing the point to such a spectacular degree, they should have received an award.

Was it the Daily Mail that ran a feature about how the suspected killer of prostitutes some months ago was a fan of Bishop from the X-Men.

I think these articles miss the point by a mile - see Oldboy for the example. Who could take Oh-Dae Su as their idol. What he becomes, what happens to him is so horrible, the thought of modeling yourself upon him is absurd.

Wasn't that the one where they mentioned there was a small, thimble-like thing in a dragon's mouth that help's 'em breathe fire?

I remember doing a beer and junkfood quadruple feature after finals my freshman year of college in which some friends and I watched movies from our childhood. I'm pretty sure Flight of Dragons was one of them, but I can't remember.

Home Run Pies have a REALLY good strawberry one.

Twinkies are a food group to themselves.
