Today, John Byrne is a character in FUNKY WINKERBEAN. heh

What do we learn from this? He still has a pony tail, I guess.

I don't get it. Is there an ongoing plot I need to know for that strip to make sense?

Something about the local comic shop being sued for selling inappropriate material to children or something. Basically, a weeks-long ad for the CBLDF. The comics geek characters react to Byrne differently from the DA-type character.

A few months back there was a storyline where the shop sold a comic and the guy got arrested for it because a busybody woman got her panties in a twist.

Then the story got put on the back burner for a while, and now it's back with the trial portion of the story.

And the strip that Augie linked to is for November 17th, you should check out the strip for today (November 18th). Great one liner from Byrne to end the strip.

John Byrne's done some fill-in art and inking for the strip over the last year or so. Plus, Tom Batuik is a serious comic book fan(Les and Lisa got married while dressed as Batman and Robin), so it's no surprise that they'd use John Byrne as an expert witness for the defense in this case.

Can't wait for Becky's mom(the busybody who started the whole bruhaha) to end up looking very foolish by the end of this plotline.

It's a little odd to depict Byrne sticking up for "mature" comics... in real life, he's usually the one railing against them and calling for a return to older, simpler times.

And, of course, Lee Loughridge colors the Sunday FUNKY WINKERBEAN strips, which is why they look so different from the rest of the strips in the funny pages.

I think part of what confused me is that I thought this was a comedy strip with a punchline every day like Garfield etc...

It is, Dan. It just also happens to have an on-going storyline most of the time. It's usually humorous, although it does occasionally veer into the dramatic.

Think "For Better Or Worse," rather than "Garfield."

so, IOW, it's never remotely funny. gotcha.

Don't be dogging For Better Or For Worse, the best comic strip in all the world!

I've never heard of For Better or Worse, but I get the idea.

This might help, then:

It's a Canadian strip, though, so some of the humor might be lost in the translation from Canadian to English. It's like that with J. Torres' comics, too.

-Augie, going to hell now for sure

P.S. Just noticed that April has a blog now. UGH
