Well... with rumors of a new Ion series, and blurbs in the "DC on Demand" pages about Kyle, I'm betting he becomes Ion in this issue.
I wonder if he'll still be in Green Lantern Corps, also.

And as for the hero who makes the "ultimate sacrifice", I'm betting on Hawkman, who relenquishes his title to Hawkgirl with #50.

Now, DC... Can we please get an Adam Strange monthly?

Take that back! Poor guy worked his cute little butt off trying to restart the Corps, and he won't get to be called a Green Lantern anymore? That's just plain wrong.

Plus, I hate the name "Ion" for a Lantern type character. It makes Sentinel sound good.

(And my bet on the ultimate sacrifice is still Pricne Gavyn/Starman)

Ahh... Here we go. Proof, and on this very site: http://www.comicbookresources.com/news/newsitem.cgi?id=6110

"The special is the bridge between what happened in 'Rann-Thanagar' and what happened in 'Infinite Crisis,'" Gibbons explained.

Okay. If Kyle became Ion again in this issue, he would have been Ion and not Green Lantern in Infinite Crisis #1. As he is still a Green Lantern in that issue, he must be throughout the special.

Whew!

I am, however, willing to bet the character who gets changed is Kyle. I've heard that implication befroe with Kyle's name attached. I'm just willing to bet it's an internal thing rather than soething immediately obvious like a power/name/costume change.

Maybe it'll explain why he was giving orders and coordinating efforts in IC#1 while Kilowog stood quietly to the side, when in Rann-Thanagar War Kilowog is clearly in command in each scene, and is the liason to the Guardians, and just overalls outranks Kyle. I mean, I know I can't be the first to notice that as odd.

Hmmm...

"The way I understand it is these specials fit in between issues of 'Infinite Crisis.'

Oh... and it looks like Captain Comet may be the one to bite it with this...

"I think 'Recharge' fits in the interstices between the 'Rann-Thanagar War' series and the 'Rann-Thanagar' special. The way I see it, and I might be absolutely wrong about this, but my feeling is that's when it takes place. Because in the first issue of 'Recharge,' Kyle mentions Captain Comet so it's clearly after the 'Rann-Thanagar War' but before the ultimate resolution of 'Infinite Crisis.'"

*Looks skyward and screams* NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!! !!!!!!!!

Take me instead, Onimar!! :( :(

Better yet, TAKE TIGORR INSTEAD!!! (*Ahem* Sorry, just picked up a bunch of Omega Men back issues)

anyone, but not Captain Comet (Hereafter referred to as Our Beloved First Mutant)

Anyway, it appears you've found a clue that I missed. And now I'm sorry I showed you that link, for it dispels at least 3 months of sweet ignorance.

But there was no clear picture of Our Beloved First Mutant in the space-splash Infinite Crisis #1.

This does not bode well for Our Beloved First Mutant.

And Our Beloved First Mutant is a very tempting target to the average DC writer.
1) Our Beloved Frist Mutant is the only one who may be able to ease tensions between L.E.G.I.O.N and the Green Lantern Corps, and Dave Gibbons has declared they will be unfriendly.
2) Our Beloved First Mutant is an old, and yes, somewhat obscure character, only brought about it seems, to renew the copyright.
3) Our Beloved First Mutant has not been seen for ten years, and suddenly appears in time for a company-wide crossover, at a comic book company known for using cross-overs to clean house.
4) Our Beloved First Mutant is a throwback to fifties conservatism and values. A Symbolic Statement could be made with his death.
5) Our Beloved First Mutant is an inherently good telepath. In the DCU, only two telepathic characters are good guys: Martian Manhunter and Captain Comet. All the rest are evil. Martian Manhunter was taken out of the picture earlier.
6) Our Beloved First Mutant, previously depicted in L.E.G.I.O.N and R.E.B.E.L.S as a handsome young man despite his advanced years, is starting to show his age.
7) Perhaps most condemning of all, in the Rann-Thanagar War miniseries, Our Beloved First Mutant develops instantaneous bond with Kyle Rayner, who, as we know, is cursed.
Of 3 of Kyle's girlfriends: 2 have died (Okay, 1 got better!), 2 have been de-powered, 1 has suffered a personality overhaul that makes me think she may be possesed by an as-yet unknown Eighth Deadly Sin -- Which begins with a B, and rhymes with Stitchery.
The first alien woman he met (and subsequently slept with) committed suicide the next morning.
His mother was last seen on the wrong side of an oven door (even if she is alive, her house is destroyed and her baby ran off without leaving a note!).
His assistant was brutally beaten to near death.
Shortly after meeting John Stewart, John is crippled. John is later healed, to be crippled again. (John healed again, and was saved a third crippling by Kyle's leaving the planet)
Guy Gardner has not suffered much (yet!) but for the majority of the time Guy knew Kyle, Guy was effectively indestructable. Guy has, however, had his business destroyed.
The entire JLA has died at least twice since inducting Kyle Rayner (JLA: Soul War and The Obsidian Age storyline!)
Ganthet, Last of Guardians, lost his home within a week of meeting this boy. In case you missed it -- Kyle blew up the planet he lived on. This was before Ganthet realized what a destructive force he'd unleashed on the Universe, and set up personal defenses to protect himself and those connected to him from Kyle's Curse -- That Lianna girl aging herself prematurely, and Kilowog dying again, were just two examples of The Curse slipping. Ganthet's sharp and recovered, though. (BTW, this is why Kyle is being stationed on Oa. So Ganthet can protect him and innocent bystanders from The Curse)
Now, don't get me wrong, I love Kyle. He's a great character and I want to see as much of him as possible. But, being personally associated with him is not the healthiest move you can make. And Our Beloved First Mutant (I bet you thought I'd forget to say it!) doesn't have a connection to the Green Lantern Mythos to protect him.
Also, don't forget "One hero will be forever changed." If the young Lantern is going to undergo a personality change, it could be brought about by the death of an older hero he admires (and Kyle got quickly attached to Our Beloved First Mutant).

So, it appears Kyle has doomed another character.

I hope Grant Morrison brings him back to life next year.

(And my bet on the ultimate sacrifice is still Pricne Gavyn/Starman)

No way is it Prince Gavyn... he already died in the first Crisis, James Robinson went through all that trouble to bring him AND Will Payton back, and if I ever write comics, he'll be one of the new books I write.

There. No way is it Gavyn. I said so.

My gut instinct is that Kyle will bite the big one. Did the first ongoing (not mini) issue of Green Lantern Corps solicit that Kyle would be around still?

*hopes our Gen X GL'er survives Crisis*

That'd be utterly weak if they killed Kyle. Kid spends years trying to make the grade, and then recreates the Corps, only to now, these days be overshadowed by the return of the almighty Hal Jordan, and then to lose his life in Infinite Crisis?

I really hope Captain Comet (sorry... Our Beloved First Mutant) doesn't die. I thought his involvement in this story was poetic, since he was the regular enemy of the original Secret Society of Super Villains.

I seem to remember Gibbons stating that Kyle will be in GLC when it becomes an ongoing next year. This makes sense, as Kyle is the ideal "new guy" character for readers to relate to in GLC.

I'm kind of tired of the "who's going to die" speculation, so I'm not going to bother guessing who bites it in this one.

For whatever reason, I was thinking the sacrifice would be Guy, but I thought that would be stupid b/c of his possible reuniting some of the old league with Booster. Plus, he's in GL Corp, etc. For the first time ever, I'm actually liking guy. Well, It started in "I can't believe it's not the JL."

"Ultimate sacrifice" doesn't necessarily mean death. And DC isn't stupid enough to kill off a big seller like Kyle.

Agreed. Its unfortunate that they killed Shayera, because I thought she was a much more interesting character than this Hawkgirl. Maybe a good book where Hawkgirl is the star will change my opinion.

Kyle ain't dying folks. Everyone at DC has said Kyle is in absolutely no danger of being killed off and there are plans for him in the DCU for the foreseeable future.

Hell, I'll even put a hundred American dollars on Kyle surviving Infinite Crisis. Anyone foolish enough to lose some money to me?

There is no reason to hate Kyle now that Hal's been redeemed. There have been many converts since Rebirth. Many have seen the vast potential of the Torch-bearer, and have grown past merely tolerating the character to even loving the character!

Come... Bask in the warming glow of Kyle's power...
