I may have once known the answer to this question, but if so, it's been so long I'm not sure anymore.

When Carter Hall first became Hawkman in Flash Comics #1, did he end up telling Shiera Sanders his secret identity right away - or even in the very next story? Or did he try to keep her in suspense for quite some time before sharing his secrets?

I believe she was always a part of it from the beginning. She became Hawkgirl fairly quickly.

I've not looked at the re-print recently, but IIRC, she pretty much knew what was going on, after the reincarnation of Hath-Set kidnapped her, and tied her up, while threatening her life. She wasn't Hawkgirl in that story, but she seemed to be clued in on her past as the bride of Khufu.
