Basically, THE LAST UNICORN DVD has hundreds of thousands of copies sold and Peter's not received his royalties.
Also, Peter wrote the screenplay for the 70s animated version of LOTR, and the people who made that film somehow were entitled to apparently $200 MILLION from the Peter Jackson trilogy. Of course, Beagle is not getting any of that money either.
So if you want to read up on that and sign petitions or the like, read the link.

Each time I read a story like that, I think of Dave Sim's adament refusal to ever have anything to do with companies that aren't actually his own. Sim was certainly right on some issues.
Lone author writes for a small studio that gets bought by a bigger studio that gets bought by an even bigger studio with plenty of lawyers and creative accountants... What's the lone author supposed to do when he's screwed by all these sharks? Grrrrr.

Its a shame that the little man who actually comes up with the ideas ends up taking it in the rear. This is pretty much the way everything works in business though. Its a shame it has come to this. Really what should happen is the CEO of that company should have to come to court without all his lawyers and loopholes and then say why he is taking money away from the person that actually had the intellect to make the product

I also forwarded the story link to Spider Robinson's website; Spider has a tendency to take on City Hall and good causes, especially in relation to authors like Beagle, I think. I'm hoping that they'll spread the word further---there's lots of Callahan's folks who would be very pissed to hear about this, if they haven't heard already---and a lot of them are the type to get off their duffs and *do* something about it. :)

I got a personal response back from Spider (he so rocks). He is on the road right now and using really slow dialup, but promised to get into it when he gets home, and that he thinks Peter is a great author and ought to get help.
This is so frickin' cool of him. :) *beams*
