George RR Martin came here for a book signing Wednesday. I attended and got my copy of Feast For Crows autographed.

He's a nice guy, and a good public speaker. He talked about his writing career, and he talked about writing Feast For Crows. If he had gotten to write the "complete" book that he originally envisioned, it would have been roughly 2300 pages. The geographical split sounds like a good compromise.

Martin is also worried about what he'll do after A Song of Ice and Fire. Nobody asked him about his other work (like Wild Cards, which I rather like). He's worried that nobody will follow him to other projects.

When I finally got to the front of the line, I told him that I thought he wrote a good death scene. His response: "Thanks. I've had a lot of practice." :D

Here's a picture of myself with the author

I've already been told by Mike Smash that he's officially jealous. hehehe

Did he mention anything about a release date for DANCE OF DRAGONS?

Not to my recollection, but he did say that new comics in the Hedge Knight series should be coming out next year.

Cool! If I get a chance to meet him, I want to give him a couple graphic novels... Artesia by Mark Smylie, and volumes 4 & 5 of Berserk by Kentaro Miura (right at the beginning of the Golden Age, when Midland and Westeros have much in common)... I feel pretty strong about saying that if you like the world of ASoIaF, then you'd like those comics.

If they're gonna keep doing comics based on the series, I'd like Martin to have at least seen those books, because then maybe he'll get the artists to see those books.

Hell, maybe he'd get Mark Smylie (I think Miura's a little busy), and then I'd just die of joy. :D

Just to back it up...

Smylie's work for WOTC: http://www.daradja.com/wotc.html

For White Wolf: http://www.daradja.com/white_wolf.html

And for his own series, Artesia: http://www.daradja.com/gallery.html (Check out the short story at the bottom, that felt very Martin to me).

This is a man who knows armor, he knows heraldry, and he obviously loves realistic but at the same time fantastic fantasy worlds. I think he's an ideal artistic match for Martin, personally.

According to Martin's page, he's not going to be within 1000 miles of me on this signing tour, but he's going to be all over California... so... you know... if anyone ELSE was going to catch him on his tour, and you like Smylie's work, you could maybe slip the man a comic or somthing. :D

I keep remembering little things he said. Like that Tyrion is his favorite character....."But nobody's safe."

The hardest character for him to write is Bran. He says it's hard to put himself into the head of someone that young. What words would they know? How would they look at the world?

I'd love to drive to Madison/Milwaukee/whereever in WI he's going to be tomorrow. Alas, I have not enough PTO at work to go :(
