I love my job, teaching first grade, and can't imagine doing anything else. Kids that age, 6-7 years old, are a lot of fun to be around, love learning new things, and give me an energy just by being with them that I can't get from anything else.

Kids this age also tend to be very accepting of differences. They're for the most part color blind, not yet having been taught to hate and fear and distrust those of us who are a little different from the mainstream. Their parents not so much, but the kids usually present an ideal for how we should deal with others when it comes to race and gender.

I am extraordinarily good at this, and get an enormous amount of satisfactiion at knowing that I'm doing a very important job, and doing it very well.

There are days when the 2:00 bell rings and I realize that it's time to go home and the day just disappeared on me.

I liked it until Wednesday, when they came in and laid off my entire shift...

Normally I do.

I am the computer support person for my office. Actually, I am computer support person for two offices, about 20 miles apart.

I don't have a boss looking over my shoulder. My boss works in Dallas, I live in Washington DC. He just wants daily reports over AIM and other than that I am on my own unless I ask for help. He is a good guy anyway. I like the challenge of solving computer problems. I never had any computer training, it is all self learned, so any problem I fix is a little personal victory. I make my own hours as long as I get the job done, and one a week I get to work from home. The people I work with is pretty nice.

Plus I come from a pretty poor family. FOr a couple of years straight I made 16,000 a year. The fact I am making just shy of $60,000 blows my mind.

THe only problem is that I am the only person supporting these two offices, and if there is a lot of work to be done there is nobody to back me up. People in my position from other offices can back me up with phone support, but there is still only so much that I can do. Right now I have a lot of people requesting things before the end of the year and I am just having a huge problem keeping up with demand.

Kipster, really sorry to hear that. Last time I got laid off I bounced back really quickly, I hope you have the same luck.

For the most part I do. I plan on going back to school next year to finish my BS, but in the meanwhile I'm stuck working customer service in a call center. I get decent pay and benefits for what I do. My hours are pretty good. When I'm not on the phone taking a call from one of the residents at a property the company owns I can browse webpages all day as long as it is "work safe". Hell, right now I'm at work posting this. I get along with the supervisors and co-workers. I have some friends here I catch movies with before or after work. I'll be satisfied staying here until I finish school and can get a better paying position. Plus I can walk to work in 10-15 minutes. All in all not bad.

I really like my job - I am one of 5 guys on a help desk that supports internal clients for a home building company. I used to have a more "high-profile" job at another employer, but also worked a lot of overtime. Then, I moved to Florida. I now work my 8 hours, and go home, leaving work at work.

I drive to and from work with a view of the Indian River, I am less than 10 minutes from the Atlantic Ocean and some beautiful beaches, I really like the guys I work with, and enjoy the work itself. My boss is good at his job (which is a HUGE component for me - working for a crappy boss can suck all the enjoyment out of even the best job), and has a sense of humor.

I needed a break from the Rat Race, and that is what I got. Now, while life is relatively relaxing, I can start doing some of those things I always wanted to, but was always too busy to get to.

Only downside? My wife is still in Toronto, and likely will be for about another 11 months or so. :( Still, when she gets down here, I think I'll be just about in Paradise.

I like my job most of the time. Of course, since it is corporately owned, sometimes you run into bad times. We're currently trying to go public, and we've gotta do a lot of changes for SOX. That has a lot of good interest at heart, I think, but it's about like security at the airport. Meaning, well intended, but way to thorough. Recently, I've seen a lot of good people lose their jobs b/c of stuff like this, and more recently, my manager. He was one of the best I've ever work for.

Other than that, I have a lot of responsibility and no one treats me like I'm 25 (everyone else is about 2x my age if not more). I'm good at what I do most of the time. I came from a job where I was crapped on for 4.5 years (my fault for keeping it I guess, but I wasn't raised just to walk away).

I'd still rather be writing or something entertaining, but for a "real job", it's not so bad, really.

Plus, I get to get out on the road some and just drive. That's cool. Sometimes on long trips where I get to bring my wife if the timing is right. I have no trouble taking off if I need to. It pays more than I've ever made. I'm learning a little of medical equipment and hospitals, and if I decided to go that route in the future, there's a lot of openings in the healthcare industry.

They'll pay for a portion of my college if I go back (right now, I only have my AA degree).

I get some overtime, but not much. Just enough, I guess. Enough to give me a little extra without having to work bookoos more hours.

HATE IT!!!! I work in a call center. I didn't realize how pathetically stupid the general populace actually is. That is why I decided to go back to school, I figure stupid people get paid more, why shouldn't I. I know this sounds really bitter but, trust me people are ridiculous.

I hate my job as I work in a menial job where there is a great deal of down time for most of my shift. This is intentional as I need a gig where I can do homework and study for my Bachelors degree, which thankfully I’ll get soon, because as it stands right now I have no job satisfaction whatsoever. The only thing I do all day is sit at my desk and when my mind is mush from reading text books, like it is right now, I’m usually on the YABS message board. I do thank god that I’m not a vulgar mouthed, beer drinking, dirty minded Australian geriatric nurse. It sucks at times, but it's better than being a scumbag.

I quite like my job. I liked it so much, in fact, that I was thrilled at the prospect of working more often. I was going to get promoted and switch to weekdays.

Sadly, it fell through, as they brought in an old supervisor instead. That upset me quite a lot. So instead, I'm taking extra hours on Fridays, and work an extra shift overnight Wednesdays at another site, which I like a lot less. At this other site, I have to make patrols in the cold every half hour. Ugh. At least that one is only one night a week.

I am sorry to say,i dislike my job. I work in retail, and run the toy department for a department store. I also have NO support(ie,i do it ALL). I work the frieght, check the invoices, stock and restock, customer service and product information. Most of that i like(except the frieght). The problem is that the company i work for has the MOST INANE BUYERS ON THIS FRICKIN PLANET!
OR ANY OTHER!

They massively over-order items(especially if they are late or delayed),then ship MASSIVE over quantities to ALL their stores, are upset if they dont sell, then CLEARANCE the items out below OUR cost a couple months later. I can NOT see how they make profit from this(only as a write off to my mind..yet that dosnt hold water to the daily profits of my dept.). The WORSE part of this? The massive overstocking of items requires ALOT of manhours, usually GRAVEYARD shifts,to sort and clear thru. Thus i sleep ALOT of days.

And speaking of which..im late for my bedtime. its 11:30 AM. On the WEST coast. And i should of been in bed two hours ago.

Bad bad me. sigh. :(

ALMOST forgot. On top of that,i also work OTHER dept. when needed, especially the job of price changer(basically i set the sale ads,and check for price increases/decreases and sale problems). This is a FULL time job,yet i do that ON TOP of my OTHER full time job.

And i make 22k a year.
Before taxes.

I feel your pain, man. I used to work as an operator at Sprint. I hated my job so much, and it was making me a spiteful person, particularly to some of my Jamaican callers(I'm sure the Jamaican populace as a whole is comprised of good people, but unfortunately, none of them ever spoke with me. I only got the bad few). One in particular couldn't understand why he couldn't call Miss Cleo, a 900 number, collect. I'm not joking.

The one good thing is that just after being laid off from that job, I had fuel for what I feel was my best standup work ever.

I can believe it. I've been in call centers since I was a college freshman. Some doozies from people on the phones:

1- "What is a triangle?" and "What does a circle look like?" - This was to a rep trying to help the customer read the meter on their copies. What makes it worse: the customer worked in a city school.

2- Friend doing a survey for a market research company. The first 5 minutes is explaining Bio 101 terms. What is a cell, DNA, etc. It was for the Museum of Natural History and about the Human Genome Project. After explaining those basic terms she asks something like: "After what I've told you, what do you think a gene is? A, B, C or D?" The person's response? "Uhhhhh. Do you mean like blue jeans?" (imagine a deep southern accent)

Things get worse and worse from there. If you don't let it get to you it is an endless source of amusement. The stories one can tell. :evilsmile

Yes, it's a fairly rewarding job and I work with really good people who are sensitive to whatever may be going on in my personal life. It's certainly the best paid I've ever been, which is great. A year ago I was putting make-up on drag queens though, so sometimes I get antsy on a computer. No complaints though!

Unfortunately not. Its an all right job, but its not what I trained for. Not what I set my mind to. So everyday reminds me of that dissapointment.

Its also not very satisfying. I'm not challenged or feel any sort of fulfillment. Its pretty lame.

I've got a sort of job now.

I'm a trainie reaserch assistant at my university, so I get to help out do all kinds of fun and not so fun stuff.

Fun:- Help a bus load of over sixties go fieldwalking.

Not fun:- Using a pressure hose to clean out a porta loo.

i've hated every job. work sucks. people who actually like work scare me. ambitious people frighten me. it's pleasant to have coworkers who are laid-back losers. but ambitious hardworking losers are awful. it's the coworkers and people you have to deal with that make a job bearable or unbearable. it would be nice to have a job where there's someone cool to talk to. cool people are rare. why are people such asses?!!? why do americans work so hard? why can't we be more european? or are they hardworking asses as well?

successful people suck.

I like my job. I do computer support for the executives at a big name computer company. It's a lot better than your standard support job -- really good benefits and you have to be on your toes at all times. But I'll be leaving soon for a similar position at a top tier financial company. Whee~!

I'm also starting up a publishing business with my husband and friends, managing the back end of it as well as writing and development. It's demanding and I have no time to myself but it's fun and I'm learning a lot.

Well, the woman who runs the front office drives me crazy, she irritates like nobody's business.

However, hard to complain much when I can read my papers, magazines, books, and comics during the work day and it's a job that includes no nights or weekends. That means I'm free to continue my work with the youth basketball league.

I like my job.

In nursing if you don't like it, you get the fuck out. It's that simple.

In recent times, it's been hard due to me developing hypertension, but I'll stick with it until I get dead or too crook to keep working.

Recently, I've been nursing a WW2 vet' who was a POW of the Japanese. In the last year has developed a nasty pressure sore on his ankle that'll probably kill him before the year is out.

I dress it daily and am in complete admiration for the discipline he has regarding pain. He actually gives me a smile afterwards.

I'm sorry to read about those who've shitty experiances with work. I hope things pick up soon for you.

Good luck to you who're working to improve your circumstances.

I love my job(s). I write reviews for www.talkxbox.com, and am on occasional writer for a local video game company (though it has yet to pay, and is more of a side project than true labor, it's still pretty cool).

I lost my job at the local comic shop last month, which was a downer, but I know why they let me go so I have no hard feelings.

I was stuck in an alternative education class teaching at-risk kids with absolutely NO support for two years (the kids were not the problem, the support was). Also, because I don't look like an elementary teacher (6feet plus, shaved head, a big guy) I have to keep fighting in order to keep from being put in a middle school class. Every year it seems.

But I'm great at the moment!

Check out my new all ages comic site for parents/teachers/librarians http://comicsintheclassroom.net/

Hee hee.

I'm teaching 1st grade, too. I do look the part of what's expected of an elementary grade teacher, though.

It's always nice to have more guys in the early grades.

Up to 2 years ago, I was in a middle school, so we're kinda flip sides of the same coin.

I've used comics in both settings.

And I'm looking for a second job now that uni's finished for the year. At the moment I'm deciding between working at a little, out of the way comics store called the Daily Planet in the city, or at an EB Games. Both have sexy discounts, and I can see myself loving both. Decisions!

Boy, I sure hope so.

I had to quit a few (well-paying) jobs before realizing I just want to do anything with comics. Problem is, I'm in the wrong country for that since comics are kinda rare here.

The most enjoyable thing I do at the moment is teach comics illustration to kids at community centers. I love drawing and I love kids, so that worked out quite well.

I've done some self-published stuff (with a friend), and am currently working on a pilot for a possible weekly strip for some teen mag. Not really something I can fully get behind (due to the expectations of the teen mag's editors), but I'm hoping for decent pay and maybe some extra publicity.
I also write a column and handle tech support for a local comics news/reviews site. I don't get paid for it, but I do get to interview some of my favourite creators which is great! (When they write back.)
