What if Earth-2 comes back and the darkness remains.
Imagine that it's 1952. Superman fought Doomsday at the end of World War II. Alan Scott went insane. Batman was mindwiped by Dr. Fate or Zatara after discovering that the JSA was mindwiping criminals. The Atom (Al Pratt) has disappeared after discovering that his wife is an insane murderer. Wonder Woman just killed a man. And the JSA, torn apart, disbands.
And then we learn that it isn't the EARTH that's darker but that there's an alien "darkness" that's infecting the DCU from the outside.
And so, the heroes band together and purge it, restoring everything.
But when the dust settles, it's 2006. Ralph Dibny has Sue back. Wonder Woman isn't a killer. The JLA didn't mindwipe people. Batman's back was never broken. Superman never died facing Doomsday.
The DCU remains largely as it is but with most of the darkness purged from its history... and with tweaks here and there that streamline the characters.
