No I agree with Cay... in 2 or 3 issues JSA went from the best team book on the market to one I almost don't recognize.

Johns should have left this book after PRINCES OF DARKNESS. It's been downhill ever since then. Things in this book don't even really happen anymore. Thank God Champagne is writing. In just two of Champagne's three issues, we've seen more concrete advancement in plot than we have in years now.

well...you're all nuts. it's still great and dc's best book with legion the only thing coming close.

Black Vengeance was good I thought.

#76 was as low a point as I have seen in the book. Then it got extremely low with #77. #78 was ok and #79 was better than the previous issue.

But I don't think it is DC's best anymore.

I really liked Johns when I first started reading DC regularly, but now, not so much. It almost seems like he goes out of his way to say 'look how good a writer I am, look how complex a storyline I can weave in a comic book.' It got to the point where I was thinking to myself (regarding not only JSA, but The Flash as well) shut up and do something already.

My only quibble about Johns' work on JSA is that he's way more interested in Atom Smasher than I am. Other than that, I think he's done good work, and I hope he stays around.

As much as I love the idea of Paul Levitz writing comics again, I really hope Johns returns to the book. JSA is my favourite team book.

In the Newsarama interview, Levitz said he was writing these issues as a favour to Johns, so I think Geoff will be back.

Put Gail on the title. She writes a terrific Wildcat. I bet she'd know what to do with all of the characters in the book.

Great idea!!!!

I don't know about that. The horrific, crappy way she treated long-time JSA foe The Fiddler has me wondering if she would be the person to handle these characters.

I have a feeling he'll return to the book, if only to have a proper send off. IC, 52, and his editorial role at DC are understandably keeping him pretty busy- hence we get Wolfman co-writing Titans and Levitz putting in some time on JSA. At least DC is giving us some quality fill-in folks.

I'd agree that Gail would do a good job on JSA. Until I remembered what she did to the Fiddler. :D What's next, the Sportsmaster being disrespected? Rainbow Raider? When will it stop?

gail is good and all, but why mess with perfection.
first flash, now possibly this? i couldn't handle johns of jsa.

I like Geoff's writing for the most part, but why does he have to be the only writer for JSA? Sure, you love his work on the book now, but couldn't a new writer come on and give us some even better stories? We won't know unless it happens. Personally, I think there are a lot of people who can write a good JSA ongoing.

Was it Johns who wrote #76 and #77 or did he leave after Black Venageance?

I hope he's off.

Don't get me wrong, he's done some great stuff on the title but lately I just feel that his heart isn't in it anymore. I also think the man has got to stop writing a hundred titles a month because the quality clearly suffers. Keep him on Green Lantern, Teen Titans and 52 but give JSA over to someone else. Of course, it might just be that he's really focussed on Infinite Crisis so when that's over, all of his books might get back on track.

I've always thought Johns has been hot-and-cold on JSA. The last year has been no different: didn't like the Sandman two-parter, liked the Hourman two-parter and the IDENTITY CRISIS tie-in, was bored by "JSA/JSA" and dug "Black Vengeance." So I have some faith that Johns can rebound with some decent stories, even though his INFINITE CRISIS tie-ins were irredeemably dreadful.

I don't see him returning immediately after Levitz, though. With 52* and rumours of a Superman gig coming up and GREEN LANTERN and TEEN TITANS still on his plate, I don't think Johns will have time for it.

You know I wouldn't mind Champagne staying on as full time writer...this current arc has been really good(aside from Jakeem coming off very non-threatening for a villain but hopefully its better next ish) I really want to see an extended run of Champagne

I see no problem with Gail Simone or Keith Champaigne writing JSA, but not at the expense of Johns. If Johns decides to leave, then they would both be excellent replacements. If Gail Simone did write JSA, it would be great to see Black Canary rejoin the team.

Mark Waid said when he left Flash he would return and that hasn't happened. So, I don't look for Johns to return to JSA anytime soon.

I agree with you except about specific stories. I though JSA/JSA was average quality, but I disliked Black Vengeance as a weak follow-up to the excellent Black Reign. In hindsight, Johns has been hot-and-cold on JSA since the return of Hawkman. His big arcs have been amazing, like Stealing Thunder and the King of Tears, but the issues in between the big arcs have been lackluster.

jsa noob here

comment:

liked the Champagne stories. very very well written even in the face of having 2.5 different locations/battles

also--the covers are amazing.

paul levitz question:

any tbp recommendations for his jsa stuff? or at least old back issue arcs that are 'good reading'?

Levitz JSA stuff ran primarily in All-Star Comics #63-74. I did a google search and found this list: Paul Levitz: Writer, All-Star Comics #63-74, DC Special #29, Adventure Comics #461-466; plus co-writer on All-Star #59 & #62

I've only read the All-Star issues, but they're excellent stories well worth reading.

I started on JSA about a year ago with Black Reign. Nothing since has touched that story, but I've enjoyed Redemption Lost, the Hourman two-parter, JSA/JSA (though it should have been only 3 issues), and Black Vengeance. The Green Lantern/Air Wave issue before his break was pretty bad. I'd like Johns to return once Infinite Crisis and 52 are over.

None of Paul Levitz's JSA stories have been reprinted in tpbs. Maybe we'll get a Showcase presents volume of the All Star/Adventure Comics JSA revival sometime in the near future.

I think I remember reading somewhere that DC was going to do a trade of Levitz's JSA run. Maybe in the interview on Newsarama?

I hope Johns returns to take the JSA to issue 100 at least.

At this point, I want Johns back on JSA *only* if his heart is into it. If he's still going to be writing/overseeing a couple of dozen DC titles then, no thanks. He hasn't driven the title into the ground, but it was certainly getting there.
