It looks like the end is nearer than we thought for Arrested Development, as per this CBC story (http://www.cbc.ca/story/arts/national/2005/11/10/Arts/arrested_dev_051110.html). The 22-episode order has been cut back to 13 episodes. Combined with the recent ratings, that pretty much spells doom for the Bluths and, possibly, even a finale not intended as the finale.

Sigh.

That sucks a whole lot. AD is one of the very, very few shows I watch anymore. It's ridiculous that more people don't tune in - it's got that great clever-yet-stupid sensibility to it that makes stuff like Futurama so great. Oh, wait, the primates at FOX canceled that one, too.

Yeah the people at Fox have no clue whats going on. They originally canceled Family Guy too. Even though they brought that one back. Who will stop these monsters?

Man, screw Fox. And those who don't watch it. Those poor people, missing out on the funniest show on TV.

It's not impossible that another network might grab it...

I'd love to see it on HBO.

If it went to HBO, i would have to get HBO. I think it would compliment My Name is Earl pretty well, and lord knows NBC has to rebuild some of their sitcom status.

it's funny that Fox hasn't seen the parallels to Cheers and Seinfeld. Poorly rated show that gets huge critical acclaim, eventually becomes number one. how do you not give it a real chance?

In all honesty, I do think NBC is in the right position to turn AD into a hit...

Cheers and Sienfeld got some good nurturing and, more importantly, did show results after a little bit of patience. Fox is bad at nurturing a quality show, though they have been rewarded in the past for trying (best case study: The X-Files) and usually takes a chance on one of their quality shows every year... though they usually have more quality shows that get sacrificed to nurture that one show.

I'm not sure which show needs and can justify the nurturing this season, however. Kitchen Confidential is the only good, new show on Fox with bad numbers this season. (Reunion is doing badly, but it's not a quality show worth nurturing.)

Right now it looks like there's an off chance that The Office may finally be paying off on the risk NBC has taken on it (I'm still looking at the numbers, but I've read other analyses saying the show has slowly gained veiwers over the season.)

Scrubs has always been a challenge for the network. I suspect that's partly because it doesn't have the same appeal as the other comedies that used to air on NBC. I think Scrubs' fortune could change now that NBC's breakout hit is another single-camera comedy.

FOX has no idea what to do with comedy. The Simpsons is family-friendly (for the most part), so they just put it on early Sunday evening and everyone sits down to watch it. Then they do the same thing with Family Guy, Arrested Development, and any number of other biting, young-feeling shows, and act surprised when grandma and grandpa don't gather 'round to watch Gob sleep with his father's ex-mistress.

Man, that was a funny episode.

the creator of the show was on NPRs "Fresh Air" and mentioned nothing about the show being cancelled. or even being cut back.
The latest I heard was that the reason Arrested Development was going to be held off was because Bateman was having surgery to remove a polyp on his throat. That halted production. (http://entertainment.tv.yahoo.com/entnews/eo/20051101/113090004000.html)

Perhaps CBS is jumping the gun or not doing enough "fact finding" (wait, a news outlet not doing research? that's NEVER happened before)

Fox cancelling your show isn't a real death sentence. It's more like being one of the X-Men and being killed. Just wait... wait....

Arrested Development was doing badly, and FOX still gave it a third season. No one watched it. It won Emmys and Golden Globes. No one watched it. They put it after The Simpsons. No one watched it.

FOX isn't to blame here, the people not watching it are.
