Five-year old Kanako (Kana) Sharp, elder daughter of our CBR friends Sharpshooter (Mike Sharp) and Snow Sabre (Kyoko Yamaguchi-Sharp), has made a habit of having lengthy monologues with her four-month old little sister, Hanako (Hana) Sharp. It's very endearing, most of the time, watching and listening to Kana trying to inform and entertain her younger sister (Kana *swears* that Hana can understand what she's saying; we adults are a bit doubtful about that, but we humor her). Sometimes, however, I wonder if what Kana is telling her little sister isn't going to scar her for life...

Overheard Kana remarks:

"You're so lucky you were born with hair. When I was born. I had no hair."

"Tomorrow, I'll show you how to use the toilet. That way Mommy and Daddy won't have to work so hard changing your diapers anymore."

"I'm gonna ask Mommy and Daddy if I can take you to school for Show and Tell tomorrow."

"_____________ is the most delicious food in the world! You're gonna love it!" (_______________ has been, on various occassions, fresh peaches, fresh oranges, Cocoa Puffs cereal, French toast, chocolate milk, Japanese pickles, and assorted other items...some of which Hana obviously can't chew; what's worrisome is that Kana brings her sister SAMPLES...which leads to the next overheard remark).

"I've got an orange for you. I know you don't have teeth yet, but I'll save it for you until your teeth come out. Then you can eat it."

or, offering Hana a spoonful of pudding, "Eat this! You'll like it! Really!"

"DORA THE EXPLORER is the coolest show in the world!" (at least it is when it's not YU-GI-OH, SPONGE BOB, POWERPUFF GIRLS, RUGRATS, or DIGIMON)

"Let me tell Daddy to scratch your tummy with his beard! It feels good!"

While throwing some of her older stuffed animals into Hana's crib: "Here are some friends for you. When I get tired of my old friends I'll give them to you. But I'm gonna keep Mr. Tofu!" (a tofu-shaped stuffy I got for Kana at SDCC in '04).

"Daddy is from the USA and Mommy is from Japan. Japan is really, really far away. It's more far away than the moon!"

"You know, you're always gonna be smaller than me."

"Mommy is the prettiest girl in the world. Except for you and me."

"Boys can be kind of silly sometimes. You've got to know that."

"Ice is made out of cold water and smoke is made out of hot fire."

"You have to wear pink clothes only because pink is my favorite color."

"You always have to listen to me no matter what. Because I'm your BIG sister!"

And my favorite...

"Let's ask Uncle Kenny. He knows EVERYTHING!" :)

I wonder if Hana is processing any of this. At this stage, maybe it'd be better if she didn't.

Variously known as "Mr. Tofu" or "Tofu-san" in the Sharp household.

Another favorite (and often heard) Kana remark: when Kana is trying to convince her parents or me of something and thinks it isn't working, she turns to Hana for support like this:

Kana: Hana thinks so, right?

Hana:.....

Kana: See?

Love it when she pulls that one. :)

Mike and Koko have tiny speakers set up near Hana's crib that plays soft classical music (Koko doesn't believe that loud music is good for babies). We'll begin working on her as soon as Mom says it's OK. :)

I slipped earphones on Kana and played her Beatles tunes when she was as young as one. "Octopus' Garden" is her Beatles tune (What can you do? She's just a little kid, after all).

Remember Ken, we're counting on you to induct her into Beatlemania and the mysteries of Chuck Berry. Don't let us down or she end up being a gangsta rap fan...or worst a psuedo intellectual indie snob like...like...me!

You should listen to Kana singing along to the Pretenders' "Brass In Pocket" when it comes on the radio. She sings the infamous chorus of "I'm SPECIAL! So SPECIAL!" like she really means it (and I think she does). :)

This is one kid with no self-esteem problems, that's for sure.
