Ok....there's a deal I'm looking at right now

You know the Marriott that's right next to the convention center? It's offering me 5 nights for $2000. If there's 4 of us staying, that means it's roughly $100 a night in a 4 star hotel. It has a bay view!

However, we'd need one more person. Otherwise, the 3 of us are looking at around $650 each.

Unless Bib is leaving on Sunday night and not going to the zoo. Then it's $450 for each of us

Fabian
05-03-2006, 03:24 AM
Ok here's another one:

The Best Western Inn is offering me a room for $247.50 a night which for 3 of us, it would be, $82.50 plus taxes. It's in downtown San Diego and it's a 3 star hotel but it's 1.4 miles away from the gaslamp

Done. For some reason, after reading through this entire thread last night, I was under the impression you weren't 100% sure yet.

It's just my typical insecurity, because I still haven't heard from koop about my hotel. But if for some reason that doesn't work out, I'll try to make some other arrangement. I am assuming that koop will come through, but that I will be going anyway even if he doesn't.

Well, this isn't an announcement I'm gonna enjoy making, but it looks pretty likely that I'm gonna have to bail this year. My financial situation couldn't be much worse at the moment - to give you an example, I've been living off my credit cards for close to 3 months now, and two of them are maxed out. The work situation is finally starting to pick up, but with only 2 months between now and the Con, even if I get a shitload of work in that time, I still can't afford to take the time off work, much less spend a couple grand on the trip itself.

Sorry, folks. Maybe next year.
Man, this sucks! But I totally understand, Bret. It's too bad the freelance is so sparse for you right now.

CO Jones/El Heffe/Punchy, still getting the room, right? If so, I need to get everyone set up in the room, with names and all that. Thanks.
Hey Ron, now with Bret not going, I honestly don't know who's going or not. I still planning on going, and I think C.O. Jones is going, but Punchy is on tour in New York, so we won't hear from him for awhile. I trying to get in touch with them. In order for me to go, we will probably need to get some roommates, because I don't think I could afford a room without it being filled. So I guess that's a tentative, yes for now. Let me know if you need my real name for the hotel.

So what's the Weenie Roast and am I invited?

MacQuarrie
05-05-2006, 02:17 AM
So what's the Weenie Roast and am I invited?
Short version:

Thursday evening we have a bonfire on the beach, with hot dogs, S'mores (including Reese's Peanut Butter Cup S'mores!), Peeps Brulé, cheese races and copious amounts of alcohol. There is also occasionally a trivia contest or other such foolishness.

Last year we all got embroidered patches courtesy of the lovely DarkBlade, but I'm unaware of any such arrangements for this year.

The event begins as soon as people can get there after the Dealer Room closes up for the night at 6:00. "There" is De Anza Cove in Mission Bay, about a half-mile north of the Clairemont Drive exit from the 5 freeway.

There is a small charge to defray the costs for the food. You're on your own for booze, but we usually put up a supply of soft drinks. Oh, and there will be a CBR birthday cake this year. (10 years, baby!)

Longer version: There has been an official CBR Dinner at every Comic-Con since 1998 (or was it 1997? Senility ain't pretty.). A few years later, my family decided to stay at Campland By The Bay, about 10 miles north of the Convention Center, in order to save money. Some CBRians (Fly on the Wall, Greg Hatcher, Jonathan Bogart, Falcoria, and Where the Hell is Fenris?) came up on Saturday night to hang out and burn things, and we had so much fun that we decided to do it again, and the Weenie Roast was born. For a few years, many folks camped as a group, first at Campland, then later at Sweetwater Summit and then at the Chula Vista KOA, but eventually we all got too old and cranky to put up with it any longer and succumbed to the lure of hotels.

But the CBR Dinner and Weenie Roast continued. The Weenie Roast was originally on Saturday night, as an alternative to the Masquerade, with the Dinner remaining on Thursdays. A number of forces conspired to alter that schedule:

1. Our group got too big for any restaurants to handle comfortably (or even competently);

2. The Con invented Preview Night, and the CBR tradition of Preview Night Dinner came along with it;

3. We found that people were awkward and uncomfortable at the dinner, but the Weenie Roast was a much more relaxed and fun atmosphere and more effective as an icebreaker.

So we merged the Dinner and Weenie Roast into one event.

There will be more information as the event draws nigh.

What, are you too good to meet up with us?

'tis probably true. But I thought Gilda was a teacher?

I'm sorry, but I'm just not good in social situations, and social situations with a lot of people are even worse, and with those who know what I've shared about my past here, it would be even more difficult.

Last year we had to take a couple of breaks every day so I could get off by myself and decompress. I know it seems strange, but when I'm around other people, particularly in crowds, it's like a constant pressure builds up until I have to go off by myself or with just Emily for a while or it becomes too much for me to deal with.

Yes, I'm a teacher, but that's not a social situation, it's a professional one, and those are six-year-olds. Dealing with kids is easy. Adults is a different story.

The YABS Breakfast?

I don't know what that is. I actually don't know what most of those things listed are, except that they're some kind of get together to socialize, and that's difficult for me.

My hunch is it's a shyness/social anxiety/discomfort with crowds thing. It's not the quality of the people, it's the quantity.

Correct me if I'm wrong, Gilda.

That's most of it. Part of it is that being in a situation where social interaction is expected is even more difficult than just being in a crowd like the random strangers I'll run into at the con. This is why Emily's high school reunion is going to be so much more difficult than the convention. I know how a convention works, so I can deal with that, but I'm not so good at a party.

I really don't want to be a drain on things, make them less pleasant for anyone else, so I think it's best if I didn't attend anything.

I think of it as a first step.
Perhaps next year they can do a lightning visit at the Weenie Roast. It's a whole lot of people, but they are mostly in groups of 3-5, chatting to each other and moving to the group closest to the sodas and then to the group closest to the food and then back to the group closest to the sodas.

You know, your geek bretheren is quite alright when you meet them.

I didn't know that that was the purpose of the thread. You're right, I probably shouldn't have posted here.
Well, that's the primary purpose of the thread, but it's also good to know who's going to be there so we can share stories afterwards. No harm, no foul.
I apologize if it seemed I was doing anything other than supplying information asked for in the OP. That was not my intent, and I'm sorry if my doing so offended anybody. I'll edit my post to fix it.
You didn't need to edit your post. I doubt if Lena or anybody else was actually offended. Curious might be nearer the mark, or slightly annoyed at worst.

Anyway, the thing is, we've been doing these get-togethers for damn near a decade now, and it's always fun to meet the people we've conversed with, especially if they're people whose comments we find interesting, entertaining and intelligent, and most especially those who show a lot of heart along the way.

You have a lot of fans here, and they'd like to meet you.

Now, let me run down what those things on the list are, and you may decide that one of them suits you....

Preview Night on Wednesday: The convention dealer's room / exhibition hall is open for people who pre-purchase their tickets. A chance to get first shot at all the stuff for sale, with a somewhat smaller crowd.

The post-Preview Night dinner at the Horton: About a block from the convention center is a mall called Horton Plaza, AKA The Suess Mall. It's this weird multi-level courtyard thing full of ramps and stairs, all painted in gaudy colors. The top level has a food court with the usual assortment of mall food and a few unique offerings, with tables and benches scattered hither and yon. We gather there so that everybody can eat on the cheap and we can avoid the chaos of trying to get tables for a few dozen at a restaurant. We spread out into little clumps of people and mix and mingle over pizza and chicken nuggets and such. It's quite possible to loiter on the periphery and pretend to not be a con person if you like. Then it's just eating at the mall.

Thursday night's Weenie Roast: A barbecue party on the beach. Food, drink, silly games, people clowning, and at 1:00 the sprinklers come on.

Saturday's pub crawl: Mammals falling down and puking. I skip this one too.

Monday's zoo trip: Other mammals staying upright for the most part. I'll be driving home then.

YABS Breakfast: The regulars from Gail's board are meeting for breakfast and hangover treatment at the Denny's a mile and a half north of the Con. Again, you could get your own table and hover nearby, and maybe stop by to say howdy and then blow out the door.

Think about it.

It's like a June Bug but with sprite in place of sweet and sour:

2 parts Malibu Rum
1 part Midori
1 part Pineapple Juice
4 parts Sprite

You can always change the rum to a vodka, or a tequila even. Sweet & Sour can be substituted if you don't have pineapple

I'm thinking you could add red Cinnnamon liquer and call it a Sinestro. I've never tried it but I figure it's worth the experiment

Pretty soon I have to figure out where the hell I'm staying during Comicon.

I was supposed to stay in one of the extra rooms that Koop was booking, but at this point I still don't know whether he did book any extra rooms, and, if so, how much they will cost. Can anyone answer either of these questions? Ray Rivard or Royal maybe, since I think they were interested in staying in those rooms as well?

I also need some advice. If I never hear from Koop and can't get in touch with him, at what point should I just give up and reserve a cheap room in Mission Valley or National City? Or is there a chance I could throw myself on the community's mercy (or throw money at the community) and share a room with one of you?

Getting late, I know, but I was going to pass on SDCC this year, when all of a sudden some free time opened up and now I really want to go.
Big hold up for me, though is the hotel room. Not only is it getting hard to find room, but prices are more than I'd like to pay. I figure it'll cost me $650-$700 for 4 nights. And that's not counting the cost of getting there, food, and other goodies. Rough estimates could put the total cost upwards to $900! And I'm trying really hard to justify that cost for comic books and movie previews.

I know some of you are flying in, so that must be a costly ticket too. At least I don't have to do that.

Just out of curiosity, approximately how much have you spent on SDCC in the past and how much do you estimate your trip this year will cost?

I'm just curious for those going, how much are you expecting to spend for this trip, including travel, hotel, food, other purchases?Probably about a grand in all. About $300 for the flight, about $500 for the hotel, about $50 for the Con badge. Add on to that food, a lot of booze, and an occasional trolley or cab ride and yeah, probably over $1,000.00.

Nonstop flights = 500

OK. So it looks like upwards toward $1000 is not totally unrealistic. I don't feel too bad then.

The only guaranteed rooms I can find close to the Conv.Ctr at this late date is going to cost me $700. I'm going to see if I can twist my friend's arm in going and splinting the room. I'm in LA, so getting down to SD isn't going to cost me too much.

Quite frankly, not a clue.

There is a very slight chance that I won't be able to make it, but it's looking pretty good. I probably won't come down for the entire Cona.

So let me know, this thread is too large for my lazy ass to wade through it all.
As of now, you're still part of the ex-howy room. Talk to the remaining roommates and see if they are still coming. In other words, I have a room, but who the hell knows.

Let me know in PM just so nothing gets lost as to whether or not this idea interests you...and although we have a car we would prolly trolley to the Con as I hear parking is a bitch...!!
It's more of a bitch when certain people don't help with the parking fee even if you drive them there.

I'm still on tap to go.

My firm is still sending me to LA, the timing has changed, but I should still have time off (ie, 1 day and night) to trek down to San Diego and meet up.

It might be the second night of the Con, but that' still up in the air.

No, I'm not back posting on the Comm board, but since nobody will answer the lady's question...
So where DO people camp...if at all...??
In the past, CBRians have camped at Campland By the Bay (expensive and overcrowded), Sweetwater Summit (run by the County parks department, cheap but a bit of a distance, and it sells out fast), and at the KOA in Chula Vista (reasonably inexpensive, nicer if you can get a kabin, and not too far from a trolley station).

This year, as far as I know, nobody is camping. At this late date, about all that will be available is tent camping at the KOA, if that. Good luck.

"Kabin?" Is that what they call them (with the non-standard spelling) at that particular camping location?

I'm curious, why has the interest in camping dropped all the way to zero? Several years back I *never* would have considered travelling cross-country to go to a Con, and it was Camp CBR that made me change my mind.

For one thing, it offered the opportunity to camp, which I've done very little of in recent years. For another (and admittedly, this was only a factor the second year), I preferred the community aspects of camping to staying in a hotel.

But most importantly, it was the cost of camping that made all the difference in the world. Instead of expending $100-200 on hotel bills, accomodations were only about $20 for the whole week. Being able to save that much money (plus getting affordable airfare) was what made the trip more financially worthwhile.

In the end, it was the camp that got me to go back the second year, not the Convention itself.

And come to think of it, HeroesCon is coming up at month's end, and I never found out whether camping accomodations exist there. Gotta check with AAA, I suppose.

I'm curious, why has the interest in camping dropped all the way to zero?I forget what caused it, but there was something last year that caused everyone to go the hotel route instead.

I camp at least once a month. Every month. So I'd be fine with camping. But I'm just as happy, since this is a week of vacation, to live it up in a nice hotel.

Well besides being closer to the action, the staff at the KOA was kinda getting prick-ish about us being up at all hours, even though there were a couple other groups doing the same.

It looks like I may not have a table where my books would be sold this year. My friend, who I share table space with at cons, is on the wait list for small press tables.

He was told there is about 150 people on the wait list, but the good news is that he is 20th. So if there are enough cancellations, he may get a table.

But I'm willing to sell my books out of my bag if needed. If anyone wants some let me know so I can put some aside for you.

Bwahahahahahahaa. No. You have to find out who has hotel rooms (and we have no vacancies in the hotel Ron got us) and see what is up. Koop who posts here usually gets room for CBR people but noone has heard from him to see what is going on.

A 4 day pass the day of is around 60-70 dollars and bring as much money as you are willing to spend.

But really what you should do is look into hotel rooms on your own to make sure you can get one if you need to.

Ok. Well you mostly want to plan on a room being around 120-180 a night pending on where you are staying. Noone has rooms for 55 a night. Trust me, Parking costs more then that.

What you want to do is figure around 15-20 a day for food (if you want to eat 2-3 times a day) and however much you want to spend a day at the con. Now for me I plan on quite a bit cause I am a spending freak at the ComicCon. To much great stuff. But if you want you can get by with as little as you want.

If it weren't for the inital low cost of camping, I probably wouldn't have gone either. (And not met Tadhg in person. Or asked him to come room with my family at Dragon*Con. NOOOOOOO!)

Seriously, my reasoning is camping is too painful for me at this point, particularly in conjunction with a convention. Actually, it kinda was then, and my attempted BS on the matter did little to convince Greg or Jim. *cough* (Or Tadhg, for that matter. Or Silverwitch... damnit, did I fool ANYBODY?) After the last year I camped and whatnot, even I finally had to admit that I cannot camp and con.

As for a large contingent of those attending, I suspect being within walking distance of bars played a large part as the pub crawl has gotten larger the last few years. That and folks that were broke and in college have real jobs now. (Which has also created issues for some people with time off.)

We are not selling hotel rooms. A couple months ago, people privately bought rooms and are splitting it the cost between them.

There are all kinds of stuff to do at the con: panels, game tournaments, movie screenings. The best info is on the main SDCC site.

Registration before the con is for a 4 day pass. The price changes depending on when you register. Check the site for more info.

My advice: you shouldn't make plans to stay in a room unless you're 99.9% certain you'll be coming. The con is about 5 1/2 weeks away and if you suddenly decided not to go, it would be a financial burden to those that you promised to share a room with.

so can we room with someone and divide the prive of the hotel???If someone who has a room is willing to let you stay in their room, yes. I think Sir Tim Drake is the only poster who's mentioned the possibility of adding roommates. Otherwise you're on your own in finding people to room with.

The $55 cost you mentioned earlier is what some posters are paying to tent at a nearby campground. If you're looking for a cheap alternative to a hotel that's the way to go, and they might be willing to let you stay in their campsite (if they have space). But you'd need to check with them.

As for age, I think the campers are all in their mid-to-late 20s. I don't think any of our youngest posters are going this year (last year we had a few 17-18 year olds). Also, many of us will be doing things like going to bars...something you obviously wouln't be able to do. You'd want to consider that.

By the way, I'm doing a little "research" for my next book while I'm at SDCC.

I have one scene where my characters go to a con (video game con, but its close enough for me). I'm basically going to be taking shots for reference to draw the scene. If anyone wants to be drawn as a background character, let me know so I can get a reference shot.
Only if I get royalties. Howy's been screwed out of that. Hutch University, Little Things, Fables, and now Army of Darkness. (As well as any other comic featuring a bald guy with a goatee.)

Royalties? Hah! Do you think I am made of money?

*Note to self. Do not draw Ron in comic*

In a cave to perform ritual sacrifices.

I think we need to find a different cave this year. Last year, we didn't have enough room to gather comfortably around the altar, and we kept getting noise complaints from the people in the neighboring caves.

You really should go to the SDCC website (http://www.comic-con.com), Gamer. They can explain such things much better than we can.

As for get-togethers, there are several that have become traditional.

*Preview Night dinner. Those of us who come in on Wednesday get together at Horton Plaza, a mall with an outstanding outdoor food court.

*CBR weinie roast. Just what it sounds like: an evening on the beach grilling hot dogs, playing comics trivia games, singing songs and generally socializing. That happens Thursday after the con closes.

*The Eisner Awards. Lots of folks attend the annual ceremony on Friday night.

*The pub crawl is self-explanatory. You won't be going on that one. (Me, either, because I don't drink.)

*A group of CBRizens are staying over through Monday and going to the world-famous San Diego Zoo.

Over the last couple of years, the Koop's Comics booth in the main dealers' room has served as the central meeting place for CBR people. Hang out there for half an hour and you're likely to encounter half a dozen of us.

That should give you a rough idea of what we as a group do at the con. Again, if you're trying to sell your folks on the trip, this webpage (http://www.comic-con.com) should tell them (and you) everything you need to know.

Remind me to get you a copy of Fanboy Bebop. It's a little heavy on the anime references, but it's still about a couple of friends that go to a con.

It'll be fine. Noisy people = good sacrifices.

You can always buy one of the CBR t-shirts Jonah has for sale elsewhere on the site. That's a pretty good attention getter.

Well...

Its just that no one really knows you yet and sometimes people are a little apprehensive about sharing with someone they don't know at all...

Plus with you being quite young I'm not sure that anyone wants to be responsible if you happen to come out with us...you know...if you get crazy drunk and start breaking shit...or get into trouble or something...

Bad news.

Well, kind of.

I can't make it to San Diego this year. I'm going to be in Europe on tour. originally we were supposed to come back during that week then fly back to Europe for some more shows but that was just too much travel so I'll be in Europe the entire month. Which is great, but I'm going to miss the Con. First one I've missed in 6 years.

Thanks to Fabe who offered me a place to crash. I know everyone will have a blast.
