View Full Version : Wait! The new girl has a topic! (aka I need help.)

MsSpring

Okay, I have a topic! I joined a Roller Derby League, and I need to come up with my moniker! If you don't know, these girls have names like "Ivanna Krushya", "Pam Demonium", etc.

I have some time to come up with one, but you all seem like a group of clever people. Help me out.

The current top 3 are: Mia Oww, Juicy Lawless, and Broadside Betty.

(Tits Ahoy was suggested, I attempted to discard it...it is now my work name. Nothing like the medical director saying, "G'night, Tits Ahoy!" Makes me feel like a real professional, taken seriously by my superiors. heh.)

I assume Miss Demeanor is already taken?

Probably. I'm getting a list of claimed names later this week. I was holding out for something close, like Mysti Meaner, but I'm pretty sure that's too close. There're about 40 leagues in the country, so most of the ones that come to mind off the bat are probably gone.

My mother's contribution was Spring Loaded...but I'm trying to avoid use of my real name. Everything else I use includes it, it would be fun to have one true alter-ego.

Anyways, I need something hot/badass if I'm gonna be a Rollergirl! If you can't tell, I'm more excited than all get out for practices to start. :)

Oh my gosh, I bet it is taken. Brittney Speared is funny. I like it.

I really like Abercrombie and Bitch, but agree that it's better for a duo. I don't have any good friends in the league...yet. Maybe when I do. As for being a mouthful, one of my other favorite suggestions given elsewhere was Randi Acts of Violence...so long names wouldn't be a big deal if they were good ones.

That's Rollerball, not Rollerderby. Two different things. And the derby tends to be on traditional skates. Quite frankly, I've never understood the rules. They go around in a circle and occasionally beat the crap out of someone.

It's sort like Tag mixed with Red Rover. One person out of the team has to make a revolution around the ring. The person is signified by a prominate colored helmet. It's up to the rest of the team to clear a path for the runner while the opposing team blocks as much as possible. The runner must make one rev around the ring to make it count. The helmet is then passed to another team member. a game consists of four quarters. Two for each team. I think the quarter ends either when time runs out or all the members of your team has tried to go a rev. The team with the most revolutions win the game.

Not precisely. RollerDerby was big in the 40's and 50's and in the 70's. Now, it's had a revival as an all girl sport. There are about 40 leagues in the country right now.

Think wrestling on skates. :) With chicks in fishnets. It's fun to watch, and agressive as hell.

It's not like the RollerJam stuff that was big for a while on TV. It's *not* the actors on skates playing a scripted game.

Game play:
There are 3 20-minute periods. There are 5 girls to a team. The pivots (striped helmet) are up in front. The Blockers (3 to a team) form a pack behind them. Then, the Jammers (star on helmet) are in the back. The whistle blows, and the Jam starts. The Jammers have to pass through the pack once, and then points can be scored when the Jammer passes a person on the opposite team. They can also, if they wish, pass the star to the Pivot (*only*), who then becomes the Jammer. Each Jam lasts two minutes, or until the lead Jammer decides to call off the Jam.

I hope that's clear. :) It makes more sense when you watch it, I think. I've seen video footage a bunch, but we're going en masse to see our first bout this Sunday in Chicago. Woo!
