View Full Version : Cable and Deadpool #22 ~ Review and Ha-ha's!

Just when you thought this book couldn't get any better...
...Fabian went and proved you wrong, fool!
This issue was just great. It's finaly becoming the "buddy book" we've all been waiting for, and it's more than just a little homo-erotic. :D
After getting the drop on the Black Box and his nigh-omnipotence, Cable and Deadpool come face to face with...those chicks DP wasted in the Circle Chase! Aaaah! They're supposed to be dead! 'Cuz Deadpool killed them! In the Circle Chase! Uh-whaaaaa?!?!
Seriously, the comic was worth it's $2.99 just for those two characters. Fabian wrote them and killed them off back in Deadpool's first mini, and now he's brought them back...to be KILLED AGAIN! TWICE! WITHIN FIVE MINUTES!
As Deadpool fights his way through this barrage of clones, (with some of the best-timed and executed quips in the series thus far), Cable confronts the Black Box (an old enemy with a new look, apparently), and is absorbed into a world of flowing information. But Cable's used to processing a world's full of information, so he takes some of that...um, information...and turns it into a BIG GUN!
This issue was crazy. It appears that Cable was behind hiring everyone to go after the Dominus Objective, in order to find his old enemy the Black Box. It all makes sense...kind of. We're supposed to be able to guess who the Black Box really is, but I'm kinda lost as far as his identity.
Anywho, by far one of the strongest issues of the series. Perfectly timed humor, lots of action, and a bunch of easter eggs for old Deadpool fans, this issue had it all. With a fun parody-like atmosphere, and an overall believably-wacky storyline, I defy you to say this isn't as good as Slott's stuff.
The recurring jokes about Cable and Deadpool's sexual preferences are interesting, too...
Thoughts?

I'm wondering if Black Box is Gamesmaster? Very similar powers, and Gamesmaster was a big villain back in early X-Force's Younghunt storyline.

I'm kind of lost on Black Bon's identity myself. The only thing I could think, given the "ugly clone jokes" they mention in the next issue box of the letters column is Stryfe, wh of course, was last seen dead, and is a Cable foe. But whatever the actual clues Fabian has apparently left for us, I haven't spot any.

That seems to be a popular guess...I think it'd be cool.
Wait until Fabian comes on and laughs at us all...

Don't ask me why, but i got the impression that Black Box was Bullseye, and there's probably no way in hell they'd use him in that role, buy, I just get that vibe...
this issue wasn't as great as the previous few, the jokes didn't get by on me in this one, there's usually a scene or two where I'm either smiling or laughing out loud and this ish didnt have one for me, it was still good though..better than most of the stuff thats on the shelves.....7/10...
ok, there was one scene that got a little smile from me, when DP kills Rive and Makeshift - -TWICE - .....good stuff...

Commcast? Hyped mutant to hardly ever appear.. It fits with Black Box's powers so far.

He was my guess before hearing that Makeshift and Rife showed up this issue. He was teammates with them in the Executive Elite. I never really undershood how he survived the bullet that Weasel put in his brain... maybe it was a clone that showed up each time since!

Did Commcast get shot? He was in Thunderbolts #51 not so long ago (well, okay, it was a while back, but it was post-Circle Chase for certain).

What a great issue!! Cable was great, Deadpool was great, Rive was great (she rocks!!), Irene was funny.
I feel kinda stupid, because of the end. Who was the guy talking at the end?

He was. He was also in X-MEN UNLIMITED#3 (I think that one, when Maverick and Wolverine hunt down Sabretooth, Mike McKone art) and an issue of X-MEN (written by Fabian) a few issues before Legion Quest. I don't think that a reason was ever given... other than Weasel is a lousy shot.

Of course, the same reasoning could be used for Commcast, if Deadpool was present when Weasel shot him.

Black Box is totally Arcade!!! He left the 8-bit X-Men world for the Information Super Highway. The BB is what happens when you take a villan that hasn't seen the sun since the 80's and you throw him into the year 2005. There's so many games now, this is the ONLY way to catch up on them all!
And why would Wade wanna massage oil over Cable's Techno-organic biceps when he has two, count em TWO!!!, Olsen twins to choose from? And lets not even MENTION Bea Arthur's fine ass. No, He's just trying to catch Cable in his own little lie, I'm telling ya. I always sensed a little sexual tension between Cable and Shatterstar back in the day, and I think DP did too.
Till next month!!!

But I don't think Deadpool has a reason to think he's death. Zola fixed him up with those Gwen Stacy-clones after all.

C&D 22 is dated January 2006 so I'm hoping this is the return of Apocolypse.

I think it's hilarious how you've got Danny Rand with a tatoo of a dragon on his chest, and then the very next issue, you the The Cat with a tatoo of a kitty on his chest. Maybe it dont take much to ammuse me.

For some reason, I get the feeling it's Swan. Swan, who for a time had an odd combination of telekenesis/telepathy/Deadpool's healing factor, which made him all knowing, all seeing, and almost immortal. He could possibly have survived about 20 shots to the head, one can never know.
If it turns out being Tyler, then he would have to had a better plastic surgeon than the Director, cause Logan went beyond berserk on him. But those are the kicks of being from the future I guess.

Good issue, but not the best. It was all questions and no answers, so I had a hard time reviewing it without adding the caveat that readers will have to stick around for the next issue to hit the payoff. It kind of reminds of when they promised to reveal the identity of Cartman's dad on South Park.
The recurring jokes about Cable and Deadpool's sexual preferences are interesting, too...
If by "interesting" you mean "baiting" then, yes, they are.
First of all, I doubt that the issue of sexual orientation can come up in a comic without people going insane and death threats being issued. Check out the letter columns in Young Avengers. I would like an intelligent conversation about homosexuality in comic books without the debate also consuming every other topic, but I haven't seen it done yet.
Secondly, Cable & Deadpool is almost literally the only book in existence that isn't surrounded by "who's gay, who's not" controversy. I'm not a homophobe and I have no problem whatsoever with the gay lifestyle, which is why I find gay witch-hunts to be pointless and insulting to all involved. I would really like to be able to continue reading this book without having every aspect of it turning into some sort of a crusade. C/D is the book that is fun and doesn't encourage any sort of violent crusade. Keep it that way.
Doom - I know you started this topic with the intent of it just being a casual conversation, but casual conversations about gay issues in comic books just don't happen. Everything is anger and politics. Do you know we're five years into Ultimate X-Men and people still can't wrap their heads around a gay Colossus? People can't accept it and just enjoy. PLEASE don't anyone do anything to encourage flame wars and slime campaigns among readership of this title. It's the only book I can enjoy without taking up a position on.

First of all, the poll was meant as a joke, because anyone who read the issue knows that Cable and Deadpool are still straight. If anything, they're just friends who don't really know how to have friends. Cable is a soldier from the future, and Deadpool is a mercenary who drove away the only two people who could almost be considered his friends, (a prisoner and an arms supplier).
Secondly, do you see anyone else getting upset about it? I'm not suggesting you're intolerant, I'm just suggesting that you're maybe overlooking the comedic nature of this book. Was there a flurry of hatred over Flatman coming out in GLA? No. People may get a little upset over gay teens and superheroes, but this kind of teasing is just for the sake of comedy. And it's funny. It's not like we should hide the happenings of this book so the general internet population will continue to buy it. We should talk about it, because it's pretty humorous.
Bringing this up as a "serious" issue is what will cause problems, and that's what we're doing right now by talking about it like this. So how about we drop the whole thing, and accept that it's a funny recurring joke?

Yeah, that's fine with me, but I'm not the one with an axe to grind. My whole point is that I'd love to drop the issue, but the letter hacks who mount boycott campaigns won't. Just something to think about. Nothing personal.

I think Black Box is Clarity from Robert Weinberg's excellent Cable run in the 2000 Revolution. He debuted in issue #80 which was part 2 of The Undying storyline.
I'll scan the page for you guys on his debut appearance:

I can undersand the feeling. My question was more along the lines of "What did this guy ever do to deserve an action figure?"
I mean at least with some of the other no-names, they at least had a semi-cool look to them to make you want to buy them. That guy had nothing.

Yeah. I think the figure might've come with a air scooter-vehicle of some sort (which essentially meant standing him on something, nothing overtly spectacular), from what I recall from the back of box.
I mean, the Corsair figure had a better gimmick then that! Corsair the space pirate dado of Cyclops and Havok!
EDIT:After a quick EBAY scan, the Commcast figures only was indeed, the little hovercraftthing he had. Oh, and he had a little blaster fun. Yeesh.
