....and to keep the X-Men books going Marvel would have to find new ways to have several of the top characters regain similar powers by other means..? What would you do with:

Wolverine
Beast
Archangel(loses wings completly)
Rachel
Polaris
Moonstar
Warpath
Iceman
Rogue
Gambit
Psylocke
Magneto
Jubilee
Storm
Cyclops
Shadowcat
Collosus
Havok
Madrox
Wolfsbane
Others...

Without mutant powers there'd be no need for X-Men books.

I dissagree. Maybe there could be an arc that has them trying to get back thier powers or trying to fake em with machine and stuff. But really a What if? book on ALL mutants losing thier powers is predictable and might go boring.

Well would Wolverine die so there no way he would be able to get back his powers. Plenty of the X-Men would have to go out and get 9 to 5s. Angel would still be a millionaire. Nightcrawler would be interesting tho.

Did Rouge & Gambit want their powers back when Sage rebooted them?

I think Beast would do just fine though. I mean he'd find a way to get them back somehow.

Wolverine would survive. He is still a fighter after all and one of the best at that. I think the adamantium will tear holes in his skin. But thank god there isn't any at any other part.

Who's Rouge?

Oh, and Wolverine would die of Adamantium poisoning as it is his healing factor that keeps that from happening.

I'd do a story in which either Apocalypse of Mr Sinister begin contacting former mutants and offering to return their powers to them. It could build up into a big event, in which the villain decides to kickstart the entire mutant population again.

What is this stuff about Adamantium poisoning? Doesn't Bullseye have that metal in his bones? He doesn't have a healing factor.

See my post was also "and they would never get them back". So no chance of becoming a mutant again. BUT. The writers could find ways to give them similar powers. As far as "no points to have a X-Men book" well, even if there`s no mutants, this could be about adventurers that fight prejudice. Let`s face another thing that is unique to X-Men World compared to other teams is that they often take a more realistic approach to super-human affairs. This could still be present. I don`t see The Avengers or The Thunderbolts approaching thing the way the X-Men do it. And let`s face it, people still like the characters a great deal, they care about them, whether they`re mutants or not. I think personaly now that they wouldn`t be mutants anymore this could open the books with new possibilties that could be interesting to see, probably damn compelling even.

How to regain similar powers?

Just at random I could see Warren asking Mr. Sinister to graft himself his former cyber-wings from his X-Factor days.
-with Wolverine, what if his regenerative powers were not linked to his mutant abilities?
-I could see Gambit and Psylocke(and Sage and Wisdom) managing very well on their own without powers. Gambit could throw sharp object like Longshot used to do, along with grenades. Psylocke would still be a ninja, right? Drop the teke sword, replace it by real swords.
-For Collosus I could see him gaining the legacy of Illyanna`s soul sword/armor. So Peter would still have this could super-silver armor(and a sword!).
-Beast? I must say I like the idea of depowering him the most so he can return to a more normal look to repower again. Since these new X-Men`s prime goal could be MUTATION instead of mutants, their top villain could be The High Evolutionnary. And part of his powers are evolving things or devolving things. Hank and he could become the main adversary of the book, two scientist minds clashing. And in a ultimate showdown The High Evolutionnary could devolve Hank McCoy`s body to that of a ape-like neanderthal. But after this shocking event Prof. X could work with Hank to bring forth his original mind by telepathy. And he would succeed. so Hank would have the body and agility of an ape-man again with his smarts intact.
-Quicksilver, we already have a good idea of what will become of him just by looking at the cover of Son of M issue 2: Inhumans`Terrigan Mist!
-As for Professor X`s telepathy? What if since they were in contact when that happened, when SW decided to "off" the mutants, he sent his mind in the astral plane. So basicly he would now be floating without a body a la Doctor Stange and his astral progections. But he would be able to go from body to body to talk with people. So it would be like telepathy. And Doc Strange could design a sort-of invinsible cloak around Prof. X`s body so the body doesn`t deteriorate and so he can spend most his time in it.

These are a few ideas that I think could work.

Matt is right though... the X-Franchise would be dead.

The characters would just become normal superheroes if they found a way to replace their powers or fake them. They'd have nothing to tie them together.

That would be rather stupid.

Doesn't Bullseye have that metal in his bones? No. Bullseye has strips of adamantium reinforceming some of his shattered bones, and a fully-implanted adamantium spine. He does not have adamantium infused into his existing skeletal system like Wolverine does.

If done by someone like you, yea that would stupid. But done by someone like me it would be interesting, going into uncharted unknown territories. For a writer that`s an attrative prospect to go into places never gone before. I think that`s what telling stories should be about.

But you're talking about neutering the concept, and that isn't a mark of a good writer.

Works out great for Morrison and Bendis though ;) .

You'll have to explain what concepts they've neutered, as Morrison took JLA and X-Men back to it's core, and Bendis really did the same for the Avengers.
