There is an interview with David Hine at www.comixfan.com
It's on the front page. Skids, Leech, and Arclight are all back!

Great news. I like Skids a lot. I really do.
And i like the fact that the school is now a place fot mutants to hide.

It makes me SO happy to see that Skids was not depowered, or forgotten for that matter. Yay Skids!
This Decimation thing is GREAT for the lesser known good characters, I am really happy.

Aww, I'm glad to see Skids is returning, but god, what a bunch of random characters they're tossing into this book. Fever Pitch, Peepers, and Arclight? Oookay. I only wish they picked some of MY favorite random characters instead of characters that I don't *really* care about all that much.
And Lorelei? Isn't she a mutate, not a mutant?

Aren't mutates really just dormant mutants whose X-genes are artificially triggered?

That is correct

Some are. They aren't all dormant mutants, though- a mutate is anyone, latent mutant or not, who's been mutated by some artificial means, rather than being born that way. Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Captain America, the Hulk: mutates.

Really? I thought it was more specifically related to the X-Gene than that? As in the Savage Land Mutates or Genoshan Mutates for example, both groups being mainly humans whose latent X-Gene was triggered. Has the term been used actively within the comics themselves to describe Hulk or Spider-Man, or has fandom simply applied the language to them?

No, it's official. For instance, the Savage Land mutates- Vertigo (of the Marauders) was basically a monkey before Magneto artificially mutated her. That's not a latent mutant, it's a monkey. Not all writers (or editors) are clear on it, but yeah, that's the definition.

Is the Arclight mentioned the Murrauder Arclight?

Is the Arclight mentioned the Murrauder Arclight?
I would assume so. The only other Arclight I know of has only been seen in the AGE OF APOCALYPSE.

Hine: In the first few issues, you'll see Mammomax, Outlaw, Peepers, Skids, Fever Pitch, Arclight, Sack, Erg and Leech. Toad, Magma and Empath will have the leading roles along with Mr M, Jazz and Lorelei from District X. There will also be appearances from the revamped Sentinels and from Cyclops, Emma Frost, Beast and Kitty Pryde, representing the X-Men.
Peepers? Fever Pitch? Sack?
Egad, they sure did pick some odd characters to save.
Hmm, a lot of Gene Nation made the cut. Maybe Dark Beast will pop back up to take over it again. :)

Skids is a pretty boring character.
Gavin Higginbotham, BotF

It could potentially be interesting if Arclight finds herself cornered by the Morlocks she once targeted (Leech, Skids, Erg, sorta Fever Pitch and Sack)...

Hmm, if I remember correctly Fever Pitch should be dead.
Nate Grey supposedly killed him during the 'War of the Mutants'. :)

I don't recall that. He later showed up battling Abyss when Banshee was running his X-Corps. FP was recruited in to the X-Corps and worked for Mystique when she carried out a mutiny.

I thought his appearance sacking Paris with the Brotherhood in Uncanny was after Nate Grey's demise.

Ah, guess they already ignored his death. No matter. :)
Gavin Higginbotham, BotF

I honestly don't remember him dying, though. Dark Beast's remote android thing, (Wynter?) got smashed up pretty bad but I don't remember any of the rest of Gene Nation dying there. But then, it's been YEARS since I read that story.

i don't think any of hine's district x characters should have made the cut, and i read that entire series.
"Hine: From that cover you can deduce that either Pietro has lost his powers or everyone else in the world has gained super-speed".
i thought so.
"Hine: 198 is a symbolic number. It was an early estimate of the number of surviving mutants, not necessarily an accurate one. I've likened it to the way the Hell's Angels refer to themselves as the 1%-ers. Hell's Angels don't necessarily make up one percent of motorcyclists but it is a useful label. In the same way the surviving mutants use the name as an emblem of solidarity".
okay, so it really means nothing then of any significance.

hmm. i was not expecting this mini to feature these c-list characters. aside from fever pitch, i can't really say i care for any of them. kind of disappointed by this news.

As long as the District X characters weren't picked over some of the better established, then I'm fine with it. As a matter of fact, it makes sense that a least a few mutants from the district survived DeciMation. In all honesty, does it really matter if the name "198" is directly significant? If it is symbolic so be it, who needs a hidden meaning in EVERYTHING? So, you're irritated that this series features so-called c-listers? I for one am relieved that it does not feature once again the same tired dozen mutants (Storm, Wolverine, Cyclops, Emma, Kitty, Beast etc) and instead focuses on some of the myriad interesting characters in the X-Universe. I was waffling on whether I wanted to collect yet another X-Title, but as soon as I found out it would feature some characters I hadn't seen in awhile instead of all the headliners being trotted out for another adventure, I was sold!

Aren't mutates really just dormant mutants whose X-genes are artificially triggered? Not usually, no. That's certainly not the case with Spider-Man and the Fantastic Four. And even if it were the case, triggering a latent mutation within a carrier doesn't make you a true mutant (which is why Mimic isn't considered a mutant).
The Savage Land Mutate Lorelei was artificially mutated by Magneto. She's not a mutant.
Regardless, the Lorelei that Hines is talking about is NOT the Savage Land Mutate, but the character with the living hair from District X.

That, plus I think they unofficially retconned that whole "latent mutant" nonsense of Scott's about Mimic.

Fortunately for her, I'm sure there's a slew of backups of her just waiting to be created by Sinister. Not to mention, she could probably take out the lot of those Morlocks all by her lonesome.

That's disappointing, I liked the mutate Lorelei. There are just too many women with the name Lorelei prancing around in the Marvel Universe. The Asgardian Goddess, the Savage Land Mutate, and now this Medusa rip-off? Lame.

When? The "latent mutant" nonsense WAS the retcon, wasn't it?
Yeah, I think that most people just don't accept it... it's not an official word from Marvel, I just don't think anyone pays attention to the Scott Lobdell thing. (I'm taking it as much from Kate the Short's FAQ as anything, really.) What issue was that in again, anyway?

Well, Arclight is badass, but those Morlocks aren't exactly light-weight. Skids is basically untouchable, Sack can possess on contact, Leech can null her powers (not something that would necessarily go down well with the rest of the mutants), Fever Pitch could incinerate her, etc... Is Erg the dude with the eyepatch/optic beam?

It makes me SO happy to see that Skids was not depowered, or forgotten for that matter. Yay Skids!
This Decimation thing is GREAT for the lesser known good characters, I am really happy.
That's one way of looking at it. Another way is that the now throw you a bone in the form of lesser known characters, while throwing a heap more lesser known characters on the depowered pile.
198 symbolical... just an "estimate of surviving mutants". I don't know about you. But 200 is an estimate, 198 is a pretty darn precise number.

i, among others, spent some time trying to figure out what it stood for. to learn it means substantially nothing is kind of a let-down.
i wasn't looking for a mini featuring the astonishing squad or the uncanny squad, but maybe some more prominent characters like former x-force and x-factor members, or characters around that exposure level. i know skids and magma will be in the series, but i'd personally like to see what's going on with say james proudstar more so than say peepers.
