What's up everybody?
I've been working on this damn thing for two weeks now, and even though it didn't turn out the way I liked, dang it all...it's done!

This one is dedicated to Nunzio DeFlippis & Christina Weir, for writing the only X-Comic that I gave a damn about -New X-Men: Academy X.
No, this book didn't have grand epic battles or life and death consequences every month, but it had heart, character and it was, most of all, fun. It was the only book that I really looked forward to every month.
I loved the rivalry between the New Mutants and the Hellions, man that really took you back. Sure they weren't really enemies, but after the New Mutants lost field exercises, basketball and had to put up with Hellion crap day in and day out, when their big battle happened in issue 6, the New Mutants pulled it together to take them on. Again, it wasn't life or death, but there were some pretty high stakes, and this time, the New Mutants HAD to win. One of their own (Sofia) had joined up with the Hellions, and they had to keep her, and the school, out of conflict with the law!
The team pulled it together, using teamwork and strategy to defeat the Hellions when it really mattered. Josh finally got a little revenge on Julian, and after a quick and intense heart to heart between David and Sofia, the team prevented a possible national incident.
The best part of all was my favorite line in the series (from Prodigy):
"See, now that's a really bad plan...you guys are making a huge mistake and we have to stop you."
Kick. Ass.
The same line (almost), would be repeated 12 issues later during the House of M storyline by Julian, in a crazy twist on reality, as the Hellions tried to stop the New Mutants takedown of Sunfire's Project Genesis.
Not to mention the stuff that happened in between. Josh and Laurie getting together, then falling apart because of Josh's relationship with Rahne. David freezing Noriko out of his life because he was afraid he would end up causing her death...the whole time Julian and Sofia grew ever closer together. And the whole time Dani Moonstar trying her damndest to hold it all together. DANI...MOONSTAR! I just went back and re-read my original New Mutants 1st issue. She was so belligerent and angry and afraid. It really struck a chord with me to have her there. I'm afraid we won't see the same depth in these characters and these relationships after House of M.
At the end the team managed to overcome their differences, and even thought the Yearbook was terribly bittersweet, it's one of those things in life that you're better off for having known.
What I've written here is really a very poor summary of the series. If you haven't read it, I urge you to definitely go and get the first trades and see for yourself.
So again...Nunzio and Christina...wherever you are now, whatever you next project is, thank you so much for the good times, and the great writing, and for the characters that I had come to really care about. I'm sure gonna miss them.
P.S. - I'm thinking of doing a Hellions poster as well...
