I would be curious to hear some opinions as I'm trying to get back into DC (after leaving around the time of zero hour). Not interested in new hardcover collections of old material (absolute watchmen, DKR anniversary, etc). What are the best?

For original hardcovers:
Human Target: Final Cut
JLA: Earth2
Son of Superman
JLA/JSA: Virtue and Vice
Batman: Nine Lives
Sandman: Endless Nights
Bizzaro Comics
Top Ten: The 49ers (technically ABC/Wildstorm, but very much worth it)
Catwoman: Selina's Big Score
Reprinted material (from the last five years):
JLA/Avengers
Green Arrow: Quiver
Promethia, vol. 1-5 (again, ABC/Wildstorm, but very much worth it)
Absolute Planetary

Everyone's listed good choices, especially BIZARRO COMICS, EARTH 2, and SON OF SUPERMAN, so I'll toss in the criminally overlooked SGT ROCK: HELL AND A HARD PLACE. New Joe Kubert Sgt. Rock art! Can't be beat.
And, of course, almost all the Absolute Editions are excellent if you widen the criteria to reprinted material.
