The funny thing is that almost every hysterical moment had almost nothing to do with Huey, whereas I find him to be the funniest character in the comic strip.
It was good, though. The stuff with Ed Asner's character's son was excellent, and Ruckus seems to work much better in the cartoon than he does in the strip.

The animation look sweet, but I was just bored by the story. I guess that reading the strip and seeing it come to life, as it were, just didn't do it for me. Maybe, if McGruder came out with something totally different, I might have been more entertained than I was.

Was it me, or was the delivery like a beat off? Maybe it's just because I've gotten used to the pace of the Simpsons/Family Guy/South Park, but the timing just seemed off by a bit. It seems they aren't going for the same joke ratio as the other shows, and maybe the episode's pacing was thrown off by what they had to cut (early reports talked about a scene with Rosa Parks) but it felt like the show was waiting for a laugh track.
And yeah, the best humor by far was anything with Witherspoon or Charlie Murphy. Playing a white guy no less.

Ha that was a great episode. Ronald Wilson Reagan is the devil! That made me laugh.. but what made me laugh the most was when they showed the previews for the next episode. Reily/Huey voices bugged me a little but over all pretty good start. I think the N word seem over used because they tried to force feed it at times but once they catch their stride it will be ok. The raincoat line was the best one.

That's pretty much what I always pictured too. Not monotone so much as Daria got later on in the series (I swear to god, Tracy Grandstaff randomly forgot how to convey emotion) but definitely deadpan much of the time with self-righteous indignation now and then when something's really pissed him off.
If King had made Huey's voice a bit, I dunno, deeper and more astute-sounding, I wouldn't be having the problem with it that I have right now.
I liked it better than the stip, actually, and the animation was so gorgeous it made my eyes smile.

"You can't use the word Nigga"
"But Grandpa you said Nigga 46 times yesterday"

Adam West was hysterical. Best part of last night's episode. It was pretty good all in all. Regina King has Riley down and for a brief moment or two she was doing Huey right (primarily during his speech in the courtroom), so that's good. Plus Tom DuBois was in it (as were Sarah and Jazmine, but Sarah only had one line and Jazmine had none, so...), and Cedric Yarbrough does the great job as him that I was expecting him to do.

I think I get what you mean. There were segments that drew out and missed the mark. The chess game, while straight out of the strip, didn't flow as well as I would have expected. But they definitely showed that they have good potential to be a hit. I think about the Chappelle show. It really only hit it's stride late in the first season, I think this may do the same. They're playing with what works and what doesn't, if we give them feedback, it can only improve.

I feel a bit sorry for Uncle Ruckas. The man has clearly been driven insane by his inability to balance the inequity of racism with a sense of self-worth. Back in the fifties he would have been called a self-loathing Negro. He is filled with rage yet dares not voice that rage against the people he views as his betters (IMPORTANT NOTE: I am not saying whites are better than blacks, only that Uncle Ruckas does).
If he were quiet and humble, he would indeed be an object of pity. But he's loud and uninhibited and in an odd way a far greater embarassment to whites than to the Freeman family. The Freemans see him for what he is -- a crazy old codger -- but whites see him as a finger (albeit a somewhat shakey one) pointed accusingly at them (or at least their ancestors).
The fact that he is completely unpredictable and likely to say/do the most outrageous/insensitive/politically incorrect thing that pops into his alcohol addled brain is only going to endear him to viewers.

And that is why I think Ruckus works better on the show. In the strip we get no real sense of his character. He just spouts his lines. On the show they set it up so we get a better sense of who he is before he makes his comments. I think if he was introduced during the first couple of years when McGruder was doing stories in strip form then he would have worked better. Thankfully now that we have the show he's finally starting to develop as a character.

While this was the weakest of the three episodes shown so far, it also demostrates why THE BOONDOCKS is going to be a success. Behind all the edgy social commentary is a sense of emotional bonding between Grandpa, Huey, and Riley. The DuBois family in the previous episode also showed this, and Huey and Riley related to Mr. DuBois as a person, not as a straight man. Most importantly, Grandpa's relationship with Uncle Ruckas in the second episode -- not taking any gruff from him but still having some sympathy -- as well as Huey's closing comments show this program has got heart.

Anyone know when Michael Caesar will appear on the show?
No clue. If they go with the timeline the strip had, I would made a wild guess at it being at the end of the first season or early/middle second season. It seems odd that Caesar hasn't even been mentioned when it comes to casting, especially since from late '01 to mid '03 The Boondocks seemed to be almost entirely Huey and Caesar standing around commenting on things, but that being said it wouldn't be right for him to show up immediately.
But, y'know, I'd like to see Jazmine actually get like a line or something before they start bringing more characters in (plus at some point they will eventually have to use Cindy. I say this because she was probably the funniest character in the whole damn strip before she more or less vanished a couple years back).

I think the show is slowly starting to grow on me, even if last night's episode used the word "nigga" too many times. Sure it was a vital part of the story, but it's ironic use is starting to grow old.
Best part had to be the bit about the shoes though.

Yeah, its kinda like that episode of Southpark where they say Shit alot. I'm half expecting at some point a giant dragon is going to burst out of the ground and start eating people.
Also, last nights episode was the shit. Best part was when Huey realized he made a mistake about thinking the blind guy was a badass samurai type.

I think the R. Kelly episode was the best to date, but one thing about last night's show: It effectively blew all of Adult Swim's violence/gore rules out of the water. Now maybe we can get some authentic samurai action!
Jin from Samurai Champloo actually appeared as an extra in Grandad's Ho episode.

Okay, I've read plenty of McGruder's stips over the years (not on a daily basis as I don't get the paper) and have seen all of the episodes so far.
Is anyone as surprised as I am that he's taking as many potshots at Blacks as he is?
I expected him to rake whites over the coals but I'm taken aback at the honesty and brutality he displays towards his culture. Time and time again, he shows blacks in negative light.
Is he using comedy to evoke change? Or is he an Uncle Tom? (not likely) Or does he just not care? Or what?
Interesting.

Honestly, no. McGruder shows no favoritism when it comes to exposing idiocy, whether it's whites or blacks perpetrating it. A recurring gag for two or three years was Huey and Ceaser hosting the "Most Embarassing African American of the Year" awards. :)

And, ultimately, the Freeman family -- for all their feisty manners -- comes down on the side of unity and compassion. Look at Uncle Ruckas. He's a cantankerous crazy old codger, but the Freemans know they are the closest thing to a family he's ever going to have.

It's the first one. Pick up "Cause I know you don't Read the Newspaper" or Fresh...for '01 You Suckas" some time. You'll see a lot of the same shots taken at black culture in that as you do in the cartoon. Though, to be honest it's much more subtle. It appears that he wants to use the cartoon to slap people in the face with the dumber elements of black culture. As much as I'm hopeful, I'll just have to wait and see how this will be ingested by the people and the culture.
So far the R.Kelly episode was the funniest. But all have been better than the first one. So I think I'm on board for the long haul now.

it really reminds me of that episode of south park when the boys get the ninja weapons...it's really smooth...almost too smooth...i watch the show and get so distracted by how gorgeous it looks...it's a really well done show.
I was surprised how up to date the show was, too, considering that the average cartoon takes about 6 months to complete an episode, and yet they had a 2 month old reference. Case in point:
The Top 3 killers of Niggas:
3. Nigga Moments
2. Pork Chops
1. F.E.M.A.
(also one of the best jokes of the night)
But yeah, I agree, I'd hardly call McGruder an Uncle Tom if the things he's making fun of are extremely stupid things that happen anyway. The classic thug/celebrity worship that goes around seems to be a high note (and, honestly, the skit about the two thugs shooting at each other, calling themselves stupid for being so violent, and then getting shot by cops instantly reminded me of 50 Cent).

But yesterday (maybe two days ago), they showed a different, all-new clip. I'll inviso-text, for those who prefer to stay pure. :D
Tom Dubois is in prison for some reason, and uses his one call to call Huey.
Tom: "Do you know what they're gonna do to me in prison?"
Huey: "They're gonna rape you."
Tom begs Huey not to tell Jasmine where he is. He doesn't want her thinking her daddy went out like a bitch. Huey hangs up, and Jasmine looks worried.

Huey: "He wants you to know he's not going out like a bitch."

The whole episode more or less. The X-Box murderer was Osama. Sam Jackson's character: Gin Rummy. Rummie. Those were actually Donald Rumsfeld glasses. I don't think it was that subtle. It snuck up on you. But once you realized what it was, it was actually kinda sledgehammer-y.

I barely recognized any of the over-the-top violence as a metaphor until the end of the show. Anyway, I've compiled a list of the ep's political metaphors:
Tom being mistakenly arrested = 9/11
X-Box Killer = Osama Bin Laden
Wunceler the III = George W. Bush
Gin Rummy = Rumsfeld or Cheney (possibly both)
Wunce & Gin roughing up random black folks for information = the Patriot Act
Robbing the liquor store = invading Iraq
Beer = Oil
Store owner = Saddam Hussein
Wun & Gin's insistence that the store owner had a gun = Our administration's belief that Saddam had WMD's
Comment that Korean Store owner up the street owns a gun = North Korea is a real nuclear threat
The confused cop = the countries that supported our invasion or possibly UN
Store employees = Iraqi army
Tom being freed but the X-Box killer actually getting away & killing someone else = Using our military to free Iraq but forgetting our original plan of going after Osama & Al-Qaeda

Does anyone know which TPB has when Huey was in school and he had that whole thing going on with the Teacher. Like I remember two of them. One with the teacher talking about Black History month and said "You can't spell african without 'I Can'" and Huey hits him with a paper ball. And the other one was when Huey asked how much it cost for you to sell your soul.. or something like that. But I wanted to know if anybody knew which TPB it was because I was planning on picking it up (I plan on picking them all up, but I kinda wanted that one first)

Okay, basically RIley likes this rapper named Gangstalicious. During one of his concerts he was singing the song "I just got shot" and he was shot. Riley is distraught and goes out of his way to see Gangstalicious. Going to the hospital he starts to talk with Gangstalicious and he makes himself seem like this tough person. While they were talking, the people who shot him came up to him and they escaped. During the car chase the guys who shot him, hit their car and they get into a crash. The "bad guys" take them into their car and drive them away into the woods where they take Gangstalicious out. The main bad guys says "I need to talk with you about Thug Love." and he kisses Gangstalicious for like a minutes or so. He strips Gangstalicious down and then he blindfolds him and attempts to shoot him but they miss. Gangstalicious runs away, but Riley passes out. He wakes up at his house and tells Huey everything.

Wow, was anybody dissapointed with "The Real" when compared to the other episodes? It seemed to lack a lot of cohesion that other episodes have had - it was very random and pieced together. FBI/pimp my ride/tv/tooth fairy randomness . . . a lot of subplots with nothing to tie it together and no really good jokes or lines. : / It almost feels like leftover scrips from the first season patched together.

I liked the Rosa Parks sub-plot, and the fact that Granddad had been crank calling her.

Best episode of the Boondocks ever. I watched it twice.
After an episode like that, I'm really expecting some protesters to pop up now, defending the aspects of black culture that the Boondocks were addressing in this episode.
Don't get me wrong, I love this episode, but the way some people react just boggle my mind.
And you better believe BET is gonna get on the case :)

B.E.T won't.
Boondocks have been attacking B.E.T for awhile, and trust me, it is long over do. B.E.T is Black Entertainment T.V, not Butts every Time!
I mean damn, they used to have that Teen talk show, but now it is all about "How many chicken heads can I get, and how many diamonds can I own, and is my grill all shiny" and shit.
If B.E.T wants to go after Boondocks, all they will get is many angered Boondocks fans, and they'll make themself look bad.
But the show is badass, and the comic strip is even better.

Bob Johnson made a rebuttal towards Aaron McGruder's commentary on him back in 1999 or so, saying that B.E.T. does more for the black community in one day than the "player hating" McGruder had done in his entire life. In response, McGruder put that quote on the back of the first Boondocks collection under various quotes praising the comic strip. I don't know if B.E.T. has made a rebuttal since then.

Actually, he made a comic strip about that quote, too. Went like this:
We at the Boondocks have listened, and have found out that Bob Johnson has done more for the black community than the creator of this strip, one Playa hatin' Aaron McGruder has done in his whole life. In response, we would like to follow Mr. Johnson's example in pushing the black community forward, and that is why we present this:
A picture of a black woman's gyrating rear end.
*Insert picture*
So when you think "black women's gyrating rear ends", don't think BET, think The Boondocks.
ARGH. I *hate* the term Player Hating even more! It's just a default label when someone can't come up with a decent counterpoint, in my experience.
Am I confused about it's usage? Because I can't see why disliking promiscurity and womanizing would be seen as an insult by anyone.

Am I confused about it's usage? Because I can't see why disliking promiscurity and womanizing would be seen as an insult by anyone.
No, actually the way it's used mostly, it's the other way around.
IE, you (an intelligent, media-aware person) criticize someone for womanizing, 'bling-blinging,' putting on golden braces, and being extremely shallow. He, on the other hand, can't come up with a good defense other than calling you a 'playa-hata.'
It just reeks of the inability to think. Like I said before, calling someone a player hater is the default defense for a lot of guys who are guilty of womanizing and the depth of a piece of tissue paper.
(what makes it even sadder are some of the women who stand up for these guys as well)

That right there is half the reason I can't have a relatively meaningful conversation with 90% of the people I come in contact with. I'm probably the picture they have next to the word "player hater" in the dictionary. I understand the influences that can cause women to do this, I just don't want to be so disheartened sometimes.

I agree. It is weird that whether you agree with the satire, or politics or not, it is compelling, and funny as hell. Although, I will say that I will not watch or discuss this in mixed company. That is the paradox to the show,,, I am not sure I am comfortable enough to watch it with non African Americans, which calls into question my own issues with race and politics. Okay. I got a little annoyed by the Anime aspect of this episode. I realize that there is a certain segment of African Americans who are heavily influenced by Japanese animation. I also note that the Boondocks clearly comes from that segment. But the sword fight/glove fight just went too far. At least in the Blind Samurai fight it was presented as parody instead of a straight up fight.
But I loved every second of Wuncler/Rummy/Riely. That was so freaking funny.
"Y'all niggas is gay!" is now my favorite phrase.

it's kinda like the "airing dirty laundry"...what happens in the community, stays in the community, you know what i mean...personally, i wouldn't feel comfortable watching it in mixed company...as much as i hate to admit...the word "nigger" or any derivative of it outside of the "fam", is still a sore spot...even as i'm watching this ep. and rationally i know that the voice actors are black, i still got a knee jerk reaction to see a "white" character use it...and that's the great thing about the show...it makes you think about those kinds of things...makes you think about what is now permissable in today's society that wasn't in the past,as a result pop culture's influence.

Boondocks has to be my favorite show and comic strip. It just keeps getting better and better.
I thought in the latest strips that was Huey and Reily, guess I was wrong.
The latest episode was nice I felt, especially the end where Reily did the picture of his grandparents. I don't think it was his and Huey's parents, if it was I think the both of them would have teared up. Which leads me to think it was Granddad's wife and the picture was for him based on what the artist told Reily.
The one before that has my favorite quote of the series though, from Let's Nab Oprah.
Gin Rummy: Man, I don't get that.
Wuncler III: What?
Gin Rummy: That "texting" sh*t.
Wuncler III: What's wrong with texting?
Gin Rummy: Oh, you mean other than the fact that it's the stupidest f**king thing in the world? Who in their right mind would spend fifteen minutes trying to type some sh*t they could have called and said in five seconds? Plus, it involves typing with your thumbs, which I just don't approve of. I don't know about you, but I don't have time to read something that a motherf**ker typed with his thumbs. Fun Fact: Nothing typed by somebody's thumbs has ever been important. It's all just nigga technology, anyway.
Wuncler III: What'd you call it?
Gin Rummy: Nigga Technology. Technology for niggas, and don't start trippin' and sh*t, calling me a racist, because I don't mean "nigga" in a disrespectful way. I mean it as a general term for an ignorant motherf**ker. Anybody, of any race, can be an ignorant motherf**ker.
Wuncler III: Sh*t, I be texting my ass of. Sh*t, bitches like texting. I be texting 'em all the time. Matter of fact, I also be texting my weed man, too, cause, you know, he don't like to be on the phone, so I text him.
Gin Rummy: ...Case in point.
The whole scene reminded me of talks in Pulp Fiction between Jules and Vincent. Samual L Jackson was the perfect person to cast as Rummy.

I don't believe so from what I've heard. I think people have just speculated that the parents are dead so they now live with their grandfather. Not a bad theory since it could easily be true.
Then again it could also be true they are out of the country or something like that.

Nigh archaic meaning? You mean to tell me that if some white person says that word around a group of black people, that person won't get in trouble? Or even get beat down?
The meaning isn't archaic, if it still holds the same connotation, meaning and instinctive definition, depending on who uses it and to whom it's used.
Because the same black guys that use the word indiscriminately will stomp a hole through the white guy (thinking that he's down) that says it in the same exact manner that they themselves use. I've personally seen this happen more than once.
So really, the meaning is not archaic when situations like that still happens to this day.
