View Full Version : My Convention Purchases
Prelude

This afternoon I went to a convention held by fellow CBR poster, mortari. I never bought so many books at one time, mostly because they were fairly cheap.
G.I. Joe: Special Missions #6, 7, 9, 10, 11 (cheap)
I never really find issues of the main G.I. Joe title dirt cheap at conventions, so I settle for Special Missions and other spin-offs. It's not a title I actively search for, but if I see it I'll pick it up.
Thing #10-12, 19, 21-23, 25, 27, 31, 32 (cheap)
I vaguely remember I had a handful of Thing issues I liked when I was younger. At that time, he was my favorite FF member.
Archie and Me #15
Betty’s Diary #1, 3, 4
Life with Archie #124, 125, 250, 253, 255
Little Archie #67, 74, 82, 84, 86, 90, 91, 135
I didn't find any Betty and Veronica (my favorite title), but as you can tell I found plenty of other Archies to satisfy my sweet tooth. This is the first time I ever purchased Little Archie. I read a few reprinted stories in the recent digests and found them surprisingly enjoyable.
Sub-Mariner (1966) DVD (animated series)
I started liking the arrogant Atlantean ever since I read Essential Defenders. Now I can watch him in all his animated glory. Too bad I won't find him arguing with Dr. Strange or the Hulk.
I recommend any Chicago or north suburb CBR posters to head over to the convention in Gurnee. You may find something you like.

Do you know whether any of those Little Archies had Bob Bolling stories? I'm still trying to figure out which issues he worked on.

Glad you had fun there!
Nice to see you're getting used to some of the quirkier dealers in the room.
I ended up getting a nice stack of comics myself
Notably I picked up some key Tomb of Dracula's - 1,13,15,16,42,69
and about 1/2 box of other cool stuff.

Might as well post, so we can all find out. :) Bolling's stories are often signed, and his style is fairly recognizable if you're already familiar with it. I highly recommend the Adventures of Little Archie TPB, not only because it will familiarize you with Bolling but also because it contains some incredible stories.
I think the later issues are more likely to have Bolling stories. I understand he left the series sometime around #50 and then returned to it in the '80s.

Mile High didn't have a scan for #135. After the series was cancelled in the early 1980s, it appeared sporadically in the Archie Giant Series Magazine occasionally by Dexter Taylor, occasionally by Bob Bolling. Here are a few of those covers for comparison between the two artists' styles:
DEXTER TAYLOR:
Archie Giant Series #545 (http://www.milehighcomics.com/cgi-bin/backissue.cgi?action=fullsize&issue=04422983860%20545)
Archie Giant Series #560 (http://www.milehighcomics.com/cgi-bin/backissue.cgi?action=fullsize&issue=04422983860%20560)
BOB BOLLING:
Archie Giant Series #549 (http://www.milehighcomics.com/cgi-bin/backissue.cgi?action=fullsize&issue=04422983860%20549)
Archie Giant Series #566 (http://www.milehighcomics.com/cgi-bin/backissue.cgi?action=fullsize&issue=04422983860%20566)
Archie Giant Series #570 (http://www.milehighcomics.com/cgi-bin/backissue.cgi?action=fullsize&issue=04422983860%20570)
Archie Giant Series #581 (http://www.milehighcomics.com/cgi-bin/backissue.cgi?action=enlarge&issue=04422983860%20581)

Archie Giant Series #596 (http://www.milehighcomics.com/cgi-bin/backissue.cgi?action=fullsize&issue=04422983860%20596)
Archie Giant Series #607 (http://www.milehighcomics.com/cgi-bin/backissue.cgi?action=fullsize&issue=04422983860%20607)
Archie Giant Series #609 (http://www.milehighcomics.com/cgi-bin/backissue.cgi?action=fullsize&issue=04422983860%20609)
Archie Giant Series #619 (http://www.milehighcomics.com/cgi-bin/backissue.cgi?action=fullsize&issue=04422983860%20619)
It appears that the final issue of the Archie Giant Series, incidentally, was issue #632, cover-dated July 1992.

Rob Imes, the MH prices you listed for those Little Archies are pretty steep. I wouldn't be able to buy much if I had to pay that.
I highly recommend the Adventures of Little Archie TPB, not only because it will familiarize you with Bolling but also because it contains some incredible stories.I'll probably buy the TPB next time I visit a particular comic shop that sells all the Archie trades. I usually go there whenever I feel like getting an Archie digest or two.
