What an amazing movie! And even if you don't like it, the KING KONG trailer before the movie is worth the price of admission. But "Jarhead" is basically the "Full Metal Jacket" of our generation. Not meaning that it's better than "Full Metal Jacket" but the two are similar. I was surprised by the amount of humor in "Jarhead" but it was a pleasant surprise. You go in thinking it's going to be your typical violent war movie but every time you think a cliche battle scene is about to start...nothing happens. It's a movie about guys trained for months and months to kill and then when they go to war they don't get to kill anything.
Go see it, you won't be disappointed.

I loved it. It isn't really your typical war movie, even though reviewers seem to say how cliched and boring it is. It shows that not every soldier in a war gets to be a hero. Some soldiers don't even get to do much of anything. Hurry up and wait. Train, train, masturbate.
It ended up making me rather depressed, as I took the story of these bored yet highly prepared soldiers, and connected it to how I feel about my life sometimes.

I thought it was a great movie. It was pretty informative to what the soldier's go through while being away from home. Plus, it is the first war movie ever that actually made a soldier from Texas display some sort of thinking process. Amazing.

yeah, and the whole time I watched the texan I was like "...he seems a lot like the kid from Sling Blade" and it turns out it was him.

During the Q&A, Mendes said he intentionally avoided the war-movie-cliches, and I was really glad that Lucas Black got to be the guy who was the most politically clued in, if a little naive. I liked this one a great deal!

Arune, check out Brokeback Mountain! I think it's better, and on par with Good Night, and Good Luck and Capote.
I found it okay. But then again I'm not a fan of 'war' movies. It's not Private Ryan. But I didn't feel like walking out on it. If you really like war/military flicks or like Jake then see it. Otherwise you might want to rent it. But I would definetly call it a 'guy' movie.

I've never seen all of Saving Private Ryan, I find it kind of boring. Same with most war movies actually.

Mia,
If you're not a fan of "war movies," then Jarhead might be the film for you. It's quite different from any other war movie I've ever seen.

I think she's saying it wasn't the movie for her. I think she's saying she saw it.
As I said in my write-up, a guy who recommended it to me asked if I was bringing any ladies with me. I told him I wasn't and he said it was for the best. He didn't expect the ladies to dig this film. Since Mia's the first poster in this thread that I know to be female (well, I haven't checked or anything :p ), maybe he's got a point.
I still say my girlfriend would've liked it, though.
Anyway, again, I agree that it was a very good film. Gyllenhaal and Fox surprised me with the quality and scope of their performances (though not necessarily in that order). Anyway, I don't wanna repeat everything else I said, but this is a good movie to see without expectations.
Btw, I think a spoiler-warning would be nice, since part of the movie is the suspense of wondering if/when something WILL happen. Saying it won't is a spoiler, imo.
