The Cure's self-titled album has now been in stores for a week and is expected to debut in the top ten on the Billboard Top 200 Albums chart, with first week US sales of an estimated 81,000 albums sold.

The Cure's robert smith is a love cat with nine lives. He's the groovy big sister you always wished you had, a swirl of big, sticky hair and lipstick and New Wave angst. He still reigns as the coolest lesbian rock star of all time, even if he's technically a straight guy. The Cure are on a roll these days, and the new album is their most adventurous and passionate since Disintegration. "Before Three," "Lost" and "(I Don't Know What's Going) On . . ." are jaw-droppingly great hymns to romantic obsession -- the Cure's specialty. The first big surprise on The Cure is how loud and resonant the guitars are, with no neo-Eighties keyboards at all. The next big surprise is Smith's huge vocals -- he sounded wispy on the erratic Bloodflowers (2000), but he emotes live and direct here. People tend to associate Smith with adolescent gloom, but he's always sung smart adult love songs -- "The Lovecats," "Just Like Heaven" -- and he hits one of his all-time romantic peaks here, wailing the twisted devotion of "Before Three": "Whispering dreams, so fucked and high/It's hard to hold this night inside." It's the grooviest thing, it's a perfect dream.

'The Cure' enters the Soundscan/Billboard Top 200 albums chart at #7 with sales of 90,705. That's an incredible number! And it sold 527 copies two weeks ago, and 11 the week before that, so that brings total sales to 91,250 so far.
The Cure scores the second highest-charting album of its nearly 25-year career with its self-titled I Am/Geffen set, which arrives at No. 7 on sales of 91,000 copies. The total also marks the group's best sales week in 12 years. The post-punk act's most successful debut remains the Elektra album "Wish," which bowed at No. 2 on the Billboard 200 in 1992 with 135,000 copies, and has sold 1.2 million copies to date.

The Cure has aligned with Amnesty International (http://www.amnestyusa.org/musicforhumanrights/artists/artist_thecure.html) to help support human rights.
Amnesty International stands for all that is fair and just in this world. The rights that too often we take for granted can too quickly be taken away. Through Amnesty International, each individual's voice becomes amplified into a loud chorus of protest over injustice and a rousing celebration of human dignity. I am proud to lend my voice to the call for human rights and urge you to speak out as well by joining Amnesty International today.

We had so much fun tailgating in the parking lot before the show. Anyway we skipped most of the opening acts, though we did watch one on the side stage. Oh, and in the lot I paid a scalper $23 for a 20th row seat...well worth it since we all only had lawn seats. Inside the show rocked! Robert's gotten fat, but otherwise he sounded amazing. Wish I could catch another date!

We love them for their hair and fashion, but most importantly for their thought provoking, love-inducing, pop/goth/rock music. They're one of the most important alternative bands of our time, and MTV is proud to announce The Cure as our new MTV Icon.
On Friday, September 17, we're throwing a huge party for them, complete with live performances, Cure flashbacks and plenty of ass-kissing from fans and showbiz luvvies.
Stick here for more info on how to win tickets and an MTV Icon/MSN Messenger live video chat with The Cure.

It was a day of great sadness for me. As it was to be in the Gorge , a singularly beautiful place for a concert.
Two days later, they announce that they will have it at the Everett Events centre -- possibly the worst concert place in history (it's an ice hockey rink).
People bellyached.
People complained.
People lamented that it wouldn't be at the Gorge.
People yelled about Smith's "unprofessionalism" and decided to just get refunds.
Those people missed an amazing show.

Billy Corgan, with his new poetry book Blinking with Fists currently sitting at #24 on the New York Times Best Seller list, has apparently finished his solo album. According to Corgan, this album is truly a solo effort as he plays all the instruments himself. When asked if he has any special guest artists on the new album, Corgan explained that he brought in Robert Smith of The Cure to help him sing a version of the Bee Gee's "To Love Somebody."
"No my solo album truly is solo. It's pretty much all me. There's only one guest musician that's Robert Smith from The Cure who's on one song."
Corgan went on to add "I do a cover of a Bee Gees song from the 60's called 'To Love Somebody' and he sings on that with me. It's really beautiful; I'm really excited about it."
With such influential albums from The Smashing Pumpkins and Zwan already to his credit, Corgan isn't the only one excited about his much anticipated solo album, which is slated for a Spring 2005 release.

TORONTO (Billboard) - The Cure plans to hit the studio in January to record its next album, according to a post from frontman Robert Smith on the group's Web site (http://www.thecure.com) (http://www.thecure.com).
"We are still on course for a summer release, as it's all in the preparation," he said.
The-as-yet-untitled effort will be the Cure's first since keyboardist Roger O'Donnell and guitarist Perry Bamonte left the band earlier this year (former guitarist Porl Thompson has since rejoined). It will be the follow-up to 2004's "The Cure," which has sold 317,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Smith also said that he is close to completing the next phase of the band's expanded reissue series, which will include 1984's "The Top," 1985's "The Head on the Door" and 1987's "Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me, as well as "The Blue Sunshine," a 1983 album Smith and Steve Severin, the guitarist with Siouxsie and the Banshees, created under the name the Glove. The sets should be out by next spring.
In addition, Smith is assembling a live DVD from the Cure's summer performances and "writing some film music," according to his message.

from Yahoo! UK News (http://uk.news.launch.yahoo.com/dyna/article.html?a=/06122006/325/smith-seeks-cure-writers-block.html&e=l_news_dm)
Smith seeks cure for writers' block
COPENHAGEN (Reuters) - Thirty years in the music business is no prevention for writers' block.
That is the problem facing The Cure frontman Robert Smith, who is struggling to come up with lyrics to some of the 33 new songs the band has recorded for its 14th studio album.
The record's release has already been pushed back to May and the group goes on tour in March, so the pressure is on for the 47-year-old, who does not want to his legacy to be an ageing band that gradually fades into the background.
"I want them (the words) to mean something, it's not enough that they rhyme," Smith told Reuters in a recent interview. "I find myself stopping short and thinking I've done this before, and better.
"I've given myself a deadline to finish the words before Christmas. If I don't I should be shot," he said.
Smith founded The Cure in 1976 and made an early splash with tight three-minute post-punk songs like "Boys Don't Cry".
Adding keyboards and layered guitars, he developed a taste for epic arrangements and took the band to the top of the charts in the 1980s with dark albums of melancholic grandeur like "Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me" and "Disintegration" that also contained snappy pop hits like "Just Like Heaven" and "Lovesong".
His confessional lyrics made it acceptable for male rock singers to express feelings of vulnerability, and opened the path to a plethora of "emo" bands like Thursday or minimalist 1980s revival bands like Interpol.
The new album is shaping up to be a mix of mournful songs alongside more energetic and upbeat cuts.
"I tend to favour this option, more in the style of the 'Kiss Me' album, with different things happening instead of being a mood piece," Smith said. "But the art of that is to get it to all hang together."
For the first time in more than two decades, the band has no keyboard player after Roger O'Donnell quit last year. Original Cure guitarist Porl Thompson -- married to Smith's younger sister -- has returned for a third stint in the band.
"There's no need for keyboards when you have Porl playing guitar," Smith said. "He can pretty much create any sound you want. He's brought back a sense of urgency and we've got a rock edge again."
Bassist Simon Gallup, in the band on-and-off since 1979, and Jason Cooper, on drums since 1995, round up the ensemble.
"Being a four-piece is getting back to a stripped-down stage look and sound," Smith said.
"The fact that we can turn out anywhere with very little equipment and play is the old idea of The Cure. It's less grand than things we've done in the past, but we're still planning to play for three hours."
DON'T CALL ME GOTH
Smith's dishevelled hair, thick eyeliner and smeared lipstick earned him a reputation as leader of the gloomy goth rock movement in the press, a type-casting he has long battled to little effect.
"It's so pitiful when 'goth' is still tagged onto the name The Cure," he said.
"We're not categorisable. I suppose we were post-punk when we came out, but in total it's impossible. How can you describe a band that put out an album like 'Pornography' and also 'Greatest Hits' where every single song was top 10 around the world? I just play Cure music, whatever that is."
The makeup is part of his performance ritual.
"Performing doesn't come that naturally to me even though I've done it for years," he said. "Perhaps not as badly applied and not as obvious, but for thousands of years people have worn makeup on stage."
Fans can get an early glimpse of the band's new look and sound on a DVD released this week. "Festival 2005" was recorded during nine shows in Europe last year and mixes professional camera work with amateur footage shot by fans.
"It was never planned," Smith said. "By the time we did the final show in Istanbul we had 13 cameras, but at the first show we only had one. It was directed by serendipity, and it was kind of thrown together."
The DVD features 30 songs, one for each of the years Smith has been performing with The Cure.
"I'm genuinely surprised at people's reaction when we play shows, it's hard to ignore it," he said. "It's gratifying to know that people still want The Cure to exist. We're an old band playing to a young audience."
As long as he can still command that audience and perform for three hours, Smith said he wouldn't retire.
"I'm aware that time is moving on," he said. "I don't want The Cure to fizzle out doing 45-minute shows of greatest hits. That would be awful for our legacy."

In 2005 a nascent Cure trio of Robert Smith, Simon Gallup and Jason Cooper celebrated the return of former guitarist Porl Thompson with a series of nine eclectic headline festival shows across Europe. The quartets unique blend of passion and power proved to be a thrilling combination, and the summer set a new benchmark for Cure live highs.
Festival 2005 presents a selection of these performances captured by a mix of fans, crew and ‘on-the-night-big-screen cameras’.
Edited by Daren Butler and mixed by Keith Uddin in collaboration with Robert Smith, this 30 song DVD is a wonderful reminder of how and why The Cure remain one of the most vibrant bands on the planet.

Released in UK theaters in 2006, this film will be released in the US on DVD on June 12, 2007.
"Glastonbury is now the best known, longest running and most pre-eminent music festival in the world. Fueled by a staggering range of music, the movie will embrace the spirit, characters and overwhelming experiences of the festival as it reflects the extraordinary world changes of the last three decades.
"In 1970, a young farmer named Michael Eavis opened his 150-acre farm to 1,500 people who paid one pound each to watch a handful of pop and folk stars perform all weekend long, and the Glastonbury Festival was born. The following year, several rich hippies, including Winston Churchill's granddaughter, provided funds to enlarge the event, and 12,500 people turned up to see David Bowie and Joan Baez. For most of the past 30 years, the Worthy Farm in Glastonbury has provided a delirious outdoor concert for thousands of people over the summer-solstice weekends at the end of June. Julien Temple (director of the Sex Pistols documentary "The Filth and the Fury") spent a few years collecting footage from every single Glastonbury Festival, ranging from professional outtakes from the film Nicolas Roeg made about the 1971 event to amateur home videos collected from the attendees themselves, often retrieved from forgotten corners of closets and attics. Interweaving images of impromptu art happenings, skeptical locals, and stirring performances by music legends, not to mention the unbridled energy of each successive generation of youthful music fans, Glastonbury skillfully chronicles the evolution of the longest-running music festival in the world."
Includes performances by: David Bowie, Coldplay, Radiohead, Oasis, Chemical Brothers, Velvet Underground, Primal Scream, Paul McCartney, Pink Floyd, R.E.M, Beck, The White Stripes, Foo Fighters, The Killers, Massive Attack, Blur, and The Cure, among others.

I went to see them on the Blood Flowers tour, which, if I remember right, was supposed to be their last tour (?)--but anyway, the ticket said "opening band: such-and-such, show starts at 8." Thus I assumed the opening band went on at 8, so I got there at 9.
From the parking lot I could hear The Cure playing, so I started running toward the entrance. I asked the ticket-taking guy how long they had been playing and he said it they had been on for an hour. The opening band went on at 6. I was so bummed. They still played for like 2 more hours, and really all I missed was the stuff from the new album, but I still feel incomplete for not seeing the whole show.

From their official site (http://forums.comicbookresources.com/thecure.com)...
The Cure announce re-scheduled 2008 North American 4Tour shows.
At last!
We are very happy to annouce the new 2008 dates of our postponed North American 4Tour.
Eighteen of the nineteen previously announced shows have been rescheduled in the original venues, and all 2007 tickets will be honored for these new 2008 concerts.
(The only one we couldn't get swtiched was Seattle... but instead of no Cure show at all, we will be closing the Sasquatch! Music Festival on Sunday 25th May (Memorial Day Weekend) at the Gorge Amphitheatre, where we have been guaranteed 150 minutes onstage! All tickets for the originally scheduled Cure Key Arena concert will be honored at the Gorge, but please note: All tickets for the Sasquatch! Festival are general admission, including any previously issued Cure Key Arena tickets.)
It's all happening slightly later than we expected due to 'the playoffs' -- a lot fo the venues we needed woudln't let us confirm dates in teh March/April period -- but we understand they all have to live in hope!
However, an unexpected bonus of the new routing is that we have been able to add in Kansas City, Phoenix, Austin, Ft. Lauderdale and Cleveland... and there will be more dates to come!
We apologize again for the inconvenience and upset the original postponement caused, and will make sure that the new shows are more than worth the wait...
See you all soon,
Love Robert, Simon, Jason and Porl XXXX (The Cure)
PS
Anyone who wants a refund on their 2007 ticket will be able to get one in full from his or her point of purchase until 1st November 2007.
