With Ultimate Galactus coming up, I wanted to read a bit about the 616 Galactus. I've already read the Essential Fantastic Four featuring his first appearance, but are there any trades or newer arcs I could read that has him?

Buy Fantastic Four Visionaries: John Byrne Volumes 1-4; Byrne explored Galactus' origins very well. Ultimate Galactus will not be anything like mainstream Marvel Universe Galactus.

There's a trade called 'Trial of Galactus'...which features his return to Earth, where he battles Avengers, FF, and Dr. Strange, and takes a new herald. The story then goes further where the Shi'ar put him on trial, and I believe even Mr. Fantastic is also brought to trial. I haven't read the whole thing yet.

In 1999/2000, there was a six-part series entitled 'Galactus: Devourer', where he yet again returns to Earth, and it takes the Avengers and FF (w/Silver Surfer) to drive him off...but this one has a twist. It's pretty good...as it features the new badass herald, Red Shift.

i thought the first arc of the last Thanos series was great. Galactus is cool, and he's even better when he's written by Jim Starlin

Couldn't agree more with that suggestion. Byrne pretty much defined how Galactus SHOULD be written in those issues. Also some of the Silver Surfer issues from the 90's series had some pretty good Galactus stuff in them. The Galactus/Elders/Inbetweener story (issues 15-18) and The Hearlds Ordeal story line (issues 70-75) being a couple of my favorites.

But the Byrne stuff is the best.

Talking about the best and worst of MU Galactus is fine. Talking about the pros and cons of UU Galactus is better suited for a different board.

I was thinking the same thing. I just wanted to come back and put The Origin of Galactus reference here.

Theres a one shot called The Origin of Galactus #1 that's one of my fav's. It covers abit of his past as a normal being on his homeworld Taa. I believe it was originally published as Super-Villain Classics #1.

I went back and reread The Origin of Galactus, and I love how it starts with him narrating the story and reminiscing about the old days. Which, for Galactus, "the old days" is quite and understatment. :)
