There are many possibilities like Manhattan, the Moderns, Prosperos's Books, Casablanca, What's Up Doc?, Parting Glances, the Boys in the Band, and the Hanging Garden, but I think I have to go with
2001: a Space Odyssey!
This film never gets boring. The SFX still awe. The story continues to inspire and push me.

If I extended the list to my twenty favorites, this would definitely be on it, along with "Night of the Hunter." Robert Mitchum is one bad mofo.
G. Wayne

Check the link in my signature, with a late addition of Serenity. I'll fully admit though that my favorite movie's are far from all-time greats or classics.

This is really hard... reading over others people have listed here reminded me of a bunch. Best I can narrow it down to is five, and even that fluctuates a little. But right now I'm going with these --
The Maltese Falcon
The Incredibles
A Few Good Men
The Quick And The Dead (the one with Sam Elliott, not the one with Sharon Stone)
Dracula with Louis Jourdan and Frank Finlay
Those would be the 'good' movies. There are also these not-so-good movies, which I nevertheless adore unreservedly and will watch at a moment's notice, start to finish.
Road House
The Warriors
The Sword And The Sorcerer
Planet Earth made-for-TV SF pilot from Gene Roddenberry
Dr. Strange the 1970's made-for-TV movie
I suppose it says something about me that I sought out the second five on home video a lot sooner than the first five. Although I have them all on DVD now except The Warriors, and I think that anniversary edition will be arriving on my birthday in a couple of weeks.

Yes, Miller's Crossing was hot. I'm very suprised at how many older movies are being listed. We only had one tv when I was young so I ended up watching a lot of All My Children. I can remember that but not too many movies.

For years, this was an impossible question to answer. I liked so many movies for so many reasons, and I've always found it difficult to narrow things down to a single favourite... whatever, movie, comic series, television show, song...
However, one movie made me re-assess that, and it is now my favourite film ever. That film is the Coen Brothers' 'Miller's Crossing'.

Miller's Crossing certainly comes very high on the list;
as do Double Indemnity
and Rear Window.
I'll stop there.
Do I really even have to answer this one?
