From a recent The Comic Reel (http://www.comicbookresources.com/news/newsitem.cgi?id=6116) column...

Meanwhile, comics creator Mark Waid talked to Monitor Duty about the footage he's been able to see. "I think it’s going to be amazing," Waid said. "From what I’ve seen of the raw footage, they just GET IT. I mean, I really had goosebumps."

No diss intended to Mr. Waid or any specific person who's given a thumbs-up to comics movies, but I've heard the "goosebumps" thing enough times before, by big-time names,... and there wasn't a whole lotta proof in the pudding, in some cases. The world didn't come to an end or anything, but it's happened often enough for me to catch myself when I'm about to get excited to due to someone's thumbs-up (especially of movies that haven't been completed, yet).

I guess it's just like ANY movie recommendations. The more you know about the tastes (and track record) of the "reviewer," the more weight you're likely to give to the review. Still, though... *shrugs*

So, how much do "special" recommendations matter to you?

All it really means is that Waid saw a scene that was cool. Hey, I can tell you up front, the stuff they showed at SDCC was badass. Does it mean the movie will be good? No. Keep in mind, Waid also has a vested interest in these movies not sucking, because at least in theory, if they don't, someone who ordinarily wouldn't might by a Superman comic. In theory.

If the creator has a vested interest, it's usually a negative in my eyes. For every Alan Moore who is willing to badmouth bad adaptations, there's a ton of creators who will say nothing but nice platitudes about every comic-to-film project that comes down the pipe.

Yes, I'm rather cynical...

Don't trust creators because they make money by building up the movie. Don't trust film critics because they make money tearing down the movie. Don't trust mainstream audiences who don't understand the source material, because they don't have the same stake in the final product that you do. Don't trust fanboys, because they're so into it that they kill the simple pleasure of seeing the film with fresh eyes.

Don't trust anything except your own judgement. If you have any perception before seeing the final film, there's a great chance you're wrong.

Nope. It's not Superman's kid.

As for prerelease hype... It's just that. Hype.
