View Full Version : Do you like Venom/Carnage?

Poll to go with the other topic.
I have a feeling it's a case of a few loudmouths rather than the general populace.

No I don't. And why are people who like the characters so defensive about it?

No I don't. And why are people who like the characters so defensive about it?
Because of the way people who dislike a character simply can't dislike a character. They must question the person who likes it, blame half of the comic's recent failings on them, and refuse to try and see any other side to the character.

Carnage baby, all the way.

There should be another option added to the poll:
"I loved Venom until he got his own series and I liked Carnage quite a bit but he never should have returned after his first appearance; now both characters are black holes that suck in everything good around them"
Or, y'know, something like that. :) That's how I'd vote.

I have to agree. who's stupid idea was it to bond the symbiote to scorpion, anyway. jeeeeeeezus christ....
Carnage is essentially what happens when a good idea gets milked till it's dry. the Venom idea was great, i really like the character. what better enemy for spidey than one with so many likenesses yet so many differences. then those dudes at marvel said 'hey, venom's popular, let's make one more like him!' enter carnage. that's where it all went wrong. Carnage was/is redundant in every sense of the word

I love them both but there's always that little percentage more for loving Venom. But the crazy criminal inside Carnage is a character I really think is cool.
Stellar
10-30-2005, 12:33 PM
The crazy killer element should have been enough to drive a vilian on its own. but marvel just had to have another symbiote wearing killing machine.

I think most people agree V&C were overused, but that's a fault of the way much of Marvel has gone in recent years rather than faults of the characters themselves, so we're ignoring it for this poll.

I like them, but I find them to be entirely overrated. Most people like them because they look cool. If I had to choose one or the other it'd definitely be Carnage. I just think the character Cletus Kasady is really interesting and Carnage is a more fun character to read.
Rosie
10-30-2005, 03:09 PM
I mainly like Carnage because his powers are really cool, and he's such a shocking contrast to all the other villians.
I like Venom because of the way he's interesting as an anti-hero and also has cool powers.

I wasn't really referencing the overuse, since Wolverine and Spider-Man are guilty of the same thing. :) It's just that Venom's series, and every one of his appearances in the Spidey books afterwards, were all so inconsistently sucky.
-His weaknesses changed; he lost the vulnerability to fire, and his vulnerability to sound became so drastic you could beat him by yelling into a loudspeaker.
-The symbiote went from eating nothing to eating brains to eating chocolate to eating cancer patients. It also went from being the most benign among a planet of symbiotes to being completely evil. It also went from wanting to permanently bond with one host to hopping bodies like influenza.
-Eddie went from hating Spider-Man for ruining his career to forgetting who Spider-Man is to hating him for killing his ex-wife to not caring about him anymore.
-No matter how many times Eddie and the symbiote "permanently" bond together, they always end up getting split up again somehow.
And it doesn't help that the last couple of times they fought, Spider-Man thrashed Venom like a redheaded stepchild. A couple of those times it was Eddie, other times it wasn't (Scorpion with the symbiote should be an even tougher threat than Eddie).

I like them both okay and they gave us Toxin, which I think can be a really good character. I definitely liked the Toxin mini and loved what they did with the relationship between host and symbiote. Not sure if that relationship has been shown that well for Venom and Carnage and their hosts.
I also voted love them but if I would have noticed the like them option I would have went with that.

How many other villains were as insane as Carnage was? Everyone had a plan or a motive. Carnage just killed cus it was fun.
Venom has the possibility to be a very deep villain is Marvel pulls the strings right.

venom is okay most of the time.
carnage however needs to be written in a marvel knights/max book if we're really to believe the point of his character (psycho inherits symbiote, kills a lot of people). carnage in the regular mu is too tame, or at least too restricted (if i am understanding the point of the character, that is).

Too restricted?
Carnage racked up an ungodly body account both in his first appearance and "Maximum Carnage". A lot of the gore was off-panel, but that's never been a problem for super villains. The point still got across.

yeah, too restricted. his slogan was "let's paint the town red" or something, but in my opinion his psychosis never fully translated to what marvel intended, as most of his evil deeds could not have been shown. i don't think the "point" got across, basically.

Carnage: Mind bomb got the point across pretty well. Dreadful story, though.

Obviously I voted I love them because Venom is my most favourite villian and character of all time and Carnage is my second favourite villian of all time.
I just love everything about them and they can have so much more depth of them explored but no one at Marvel can be bothered to. When I hopefully in a few years become a writer on Spider-Man comics I will explore them both a lot more and try and convince people to understand them better and I am definitely retconning the whole cancer thing about Venom from "The Hunger" storyline.

A bit naff?
There's no poll thing for they both kind of suck, but hate is a bit strong of a word. Because Venom could have been cool a long time ago, but as others have said, Lethal Protectors did a great job of ruining that, and Carnage was nothing but a derivative attempt to have mean ol' Venom back, but still have semi-good Venom still around. But hate implies having some level of emotion about the whole thing, and really, it's just too strong a word. Especially in all caps.

I liked the Venom/Carnage mini-series. It was a fun read and it brought us Toxin who I think will develop into a great character. Venom is good when used in small doses. Carnage needs to be used more.

I'd tend to agree... I love certain versions of Venom and Carnage, but the characters have shifted so much over the years that it's hard to keep them straight. But I'd say that both of them rocked up until Venom hit his "Lethal Protector" phase (or, alternatively, right up until Maximum Carnage)... that Venom kicked ass during his return to villainy in Peter Parker: Spider-man... and that in other uses, it's been a matter of opinion for each reader.
Y'know, strike that last. It's always a matter of opinion for each reader. :)

Well, it sucks that this thread derailed into such a bitter argument. Chill folks. It's just a message board. Everything is gonna be alright. Have fun.
Anyway, I think that both Venom and Carnage have their place in the Spidey books. I like both characters but I'm not completley obsessed with either one.

Aw, that's a pity. Electro is also one of the greatest Spidey villains in my opinion. Mysterio I'm not really quite as familiar with. He has a fishbowl head.
That's pretty weird right there.

Venom used to be good, then they tried to turn him into an anti-hero and it just ruined him.
Carnage is a good threat, but there's only so many stories you can tell with the guy.
The idea of the symbites eating adrenilie, or cancer, or whatever is horrible and the symbite constantly jumping to new hosts totally sucks as well.
