If memory serves, it was Midgard's Serpent disguised as Finny.

No you are thinking of Superman, he killed Fin Fang Foom in Action Comics #178.

In the lead up to Thor 380 (aka, "the most epic fight in Marvel Comics history", as I like to point out everytime that thread topic pops up), Thor confronts Fin Fang Foom, who he suspects of actually being Jormungandr, the Midgard Serpent. Thor picks this fight because the Midgard Serpent had been prophesized to slay Thor in the end-battle of Ragnorak, but Thor had been cursed with true immortality (the Norse gods could die in battle, or, in Baldur's case, a game of darts) by Hela, thereby negating the prophesy in Thor's mind. Thor's correct, and the Midgard Serpent had been imitating Fin Fang Foom. He reveals himself, the two battle, Thor slays the Midgard Serpent, but is reduced to jellied flesh trapped within his armor, still sentient but unable to do anything, even die.

So, basically, Thor did not slay the true Fin Fang Foom, but Jormungandr. (Magic and all that.) But he probably thinks he did as the real Fin Fang Foom had been really low profile since then.

Thor killed Fin Fang Foom but it wasn't shown. It's mentioned in Thor #80 and in the Official Golden Age Handbook 2005 in Fin Fang Foom's entry. Plus the only time he seemed to show up after Thor #80 it turned out to be an imposter.

Actually it was Jormungand who initiated the battle, not Thor. Jormungand heard of Hela's curse making Thor's bones brittle so he hoped to kill him for the same reasons.

I'll bet you that Fin Fang Foom will be back sooner or later when a new iron man writer needs him. He's a classic iron man foe , he will be back.

Foom is already back. He's the head chef of a Chinese restaurant in the Baxter Building, and plays chess with Reed Richards in Central Park. He's also no longer gigantic.

So the writers did mention that thor slayed Fin Fang Foom. Hopefuly the writers do a story about that. I would love to see a battle between them to.

Remember the the Hulk Vs. Fin Fang Foom in Hulk#79 that was a cool story too bad they did'nt go further with that. Especially when Fin Fang Foom said: "The island is just a Stageing point for my invasion on earth"

But you have to admitt so what that it was an imposter it was a very interesting story. How come Marvel does not do more stories about Fin Fang Foom ? Maybe they do some kind of "Ultimate Monsters" :)

but you can still tell he's secretly plotting to take over the world.
