He couldn't breathe because his breathing apparatus only works when under water---basically, asphyxiation... as someone else said.
Of course, my hubby the diver said "The bear got him."

I think the problem with this riddle written out is that red is a homophone for read.

Yep--it's the one Oedipus has to answer to defeat the Sphinx at Thebes. It's more often told as:
"What has one voice, and is four-footed, two-footed and three-footed."
So, good catch--it's Greek. Well, except for the insect monster part. That part was me and Saturday matinee horror films.
