"We refuse to let the mass media define us. We recognize that the black experience is multi-faceted and we search for our own identities. We recognize that the search is open-ended and subject to constant revision, but that’s okay. We accept it as a part of life. We know how to keep our avocation in perspective – even if we occasionally forget. We embrace the fellowship and support of our white friends, because we know that it is better to build bridges than walls. And we root for each other to succeed in this crazy business because we’re all in this together."

My new monthly column at Buzzscope. Come take a look.

Isn't that what they call a third nipple?

I already voiced my support over there, but I'll do it over here, too--that's one hell of a column you've got there, Rich.

Nope, Nubia was a kingdom south of Egypt. It's capital was the city of Kush. Egypt and Nubia had a long standing alliance and Egypt probably got most of it's gold from Nubia. Several Kushite Pharoahs ruled Egypt in the late kingdom.

Note on Kush - do not, whatever you do, call a black Israeli a "Kushite".

Or use the term at all, really.

I understand that the mayor had a Kushy job.

My new monthly column at Buzzscope. Come take a look.I liked this part......But you know what the funny thing about us is?

We're anomalies. Aberrations.

It's like this: while we may enjoy rap music, we don't wear our jeans halfway down our a** or buy jewelry that we need to take out a bank loan to pay for. While we may dig basketball, we don't wear jackets with NBA logos speckled all over the front and back like a tool. While we may laugh our a**es off at Dave Chappelle, we demand more from television than "bling bling" music videos, and more from Hollywood than movies like Soul Plane. And most importantly… while we may enjoy reading and know how to speak articulately, not only does that not mean we're "acting white," we reject outright the entire notion of "acting white," or "acting black," for that matter.Biggie Smalls is the illest! (I have no idea why I just said that.)

Anyway, very nice column.

And "@Large (http://www.tokyopop.com/dbpage.php?propertycode=ATL&categorycode=BMG)... " yeah, I tried that, something about it just didn't work for me, though. It wasn't what I thought it was going to be, I guess. So no fault on Ahmed Hoke's part.

That reminds me: I wonder what's up with Jeremy Love and "The Life & Times of Credence Walker (http://www.gettosake.com/credence.html)"...

EDIT: Okay, I've recently learned that Jeremy Love & Co. will be updating Gettosake.com soon. And in that, I guess we'll be getting updated info on things like "Chocolate Thunder," "Credence" and anything else that's coming up.

I've been meaning to check out TOKYO TRIBES, but @LARGE left me cold, too. I liked Hoke's art in it, but there was nothing about the story or the way it was told that grabbed me.

I spoke to the guy from EBONYC at SDCC. Great stuff but he was a bit...well, Justin Davis experienced the EBONYC booth talk too, I think.

see I have a problem with this:

While we may dig basketball, we don’t wear jackets with NBA logos speckled all over the front and back like a tool. While we may laugh our asses off at Dave Chappelle, we demand more from television than “bling bling” music videos, and more from Hollywood than movies like Soul Plane. he's mad cuz he's "s'typed", and then in my opinion, turns right around and does the same thing.....

Either way...
