Is there any easy to find comics with the origional Sandman in it?

I can't find any good ones! All I find are ones from Vertigo and I don't like those ones...I found some newer JSA comics with the first team in it...I bought the first three issues without looking at them close enough...in the first one I saw Sandman in it and was excited but when I read it he was only in it a few pannels then has a stroke confining him to a weel chair...and he's not in the other two...I got the ones where they are all old and retired...it's so lame! I like Sandman but need help in finding a good story with him in it...

Well if you are talking about the one with the gas mask, there is an Archives edition available. Pulled this off of DC's website:

"The first batch of the Sandman's adventures are chronicled in this volume reprinting stories from ADVENTURE COMICS #40-57, NEW YORK WORLD'S FAIR 1939, and NEW YORK WORLD'S FAIR 1940 (circa 1940-41). Plus, an intro by Jim Amash, co-editor of Alter Ego."

Wes Dodds appeared in Justice Society #8, along with the original Hourman and Johnny Quick.

Also try DC Comics Presents #42 (ithink) and #46 Or #47

and Justice League of America (v1) #113

Working on a full Sandman Bibliography/Chronology list for UGtotheDCU, hope to have it done soon.

I am currently reading the Golden Age Sandman Archives and is is very enjoyable.

One of my favourite series of all time is:

Sandman Mystery Theatre (http://www.milehighcomics.com/cgi-bin/backissue.cgi?action=list&title=71499755246&snumber=1)

It is set in the late 30s and early 40s and features the gasmask wearing version of Sandman. It is just a great series. The stories are mostly in 4 issue arcs. I believe some of the arcs have been collected in TPB.

...for Sandman Mystery Theatre.

Always thought it was overlooked, even though it stuck around for 50-plus issues, I believe.

(Just checked. It ran 70 issues from 1993-99.)

Great writing and art that seemed off-kilter at first but really fit the stories that were told.

There was a beautiful story in Starman #20-23, "Sand and Stars," that guest-starred Wesley Dodds and Dian Belmont. It does feature the old retired Sandman, but also includes extensive flashbacks to his youth. I think this story is available in TPB.

A Wicked Inclination is the trade that collects the Sand and Stars story which is probably my favorite from the Starman run.

Hey thanks guys for the info...I'll keep my eyes open for that archives collection...wasn't he in Mystery Men comics at one point way back when? Are those easy to find? They're probly expensive though huh?

Here is a complete list of Sandman's Golden Age appearances:

First Appearance:

New York World's Fair – 1939

JSA Appearances:

All-Star Comics #3-21

Solo Appearances:

Adventure Comics #40-102
All-Star Comics #1-2
Boy Commandos #1
Detective Comics #76
New York World's Fair – 1939, 1940
World's Finest Comics #3-7

Be aware that at least half of these feature the purple-and-gold Sandman. And yeah, any of these books is going to set you back a bit, even in lower grades.

Hope that helps!

You may be thinking of the Blue Beetle in Mystery Men Comics. He too had a radio show in the 40s like the Shadow. And yes, the early issues are pretty expensive, especially ones with Lou Fine covers. Not sure about reprints of those stories.

Hadn't seen this mentioned before, but one of my all-time favorite storylines featuring Sandman took place in Justice League of America 100-102 (reprinted in the Crisis on Multiple Earths Volume 3 TPB)

I remember loving these stories when they first came out. They included one of my favorite covers too...

I agree. I love the shock ending of the segment in which Sandman meets Genghis Khan.
