I've been reading back through some old issues of the Fantasic Four and nearly all of them contain little editor notes referring to othere series and miniseres when a guest character appears. Seems to me that Quesada getting rid of these is the reason for the lack of concern over continuity. I personally never had a problem with them being there, and was never brought out of the story because of them. Did Quesada have any other reasons to take them out besides that?

I've actually talked to him about this at cons. Basically, it's the idea that you shouldn't have to feel complelled to hunt down a back issue in order to understand a story. And in all fairness, Marvel isn't the only company that used to have editor notes and now have ditched them. Although it's really weird when they do pop up, like in the first issue of Sins Past in Amazing.

You would think that Marvel would be all over the editor notes.
How much money do they rake in every year from their continuity? All those Masterworks and Essentials... It seems controdictory and shortsighted to be trying to ditch continuity in their monthlies while shilling it in TPBs.

That only works if the stuff you're referencing is available in TPB or Essential form. Remember, Marvel doesn't make a dime off the back-issue market.

I don't know... to me all those editor notes seemed kinda tacky and annoying. They really broke the flow of the story.
And people always tried to be funny in those things.... and never were....
