View Full Version : Please Introduce Yourself!

Hello to Gail and everyone else. Being bored at work, I was surfing around on the Internet and stumbled across a link that mentioned Gail Simone and these forums. Since Gail is the one that saved BoP from the ignoble distinction of no longer being on my pull list at the local comic shop, I figured Id take a look at the forum. Then I saw a thread that instructed me to introduce myself and, being married, Ive learned to always do as Im told.
My name is Andrew and I live in Denver, Colorado with my beautiful wife and two wonderful children. And the dog, and the cats, and fish, and horses, and a rabbit. Too many darn animals. Now, Ive suddenly veered off topic.
Back to the subject at hand, I work in the telecommunications field, but I am secretly an aspiring writer.
My list of comics is little on the lengthy side, typically coming up to about $150 per month, but my favorite books right now are Astonishing X-Men, Birds of Prey, The Witching, Daredevil, Madrox, Uncanny X-Men, Marvel Knights Spider-Man, Mystique, Teen Titans, and Fables.
Unfortunately, I speak only a smattering of other languages so Im really not very worldly.
Nice to meet you. :)

Hi Gail,
Love your work on BoP. The Harvest Story is pretty good. I'd love for you to get a chance at writing a Supergirl story or book in the future.
I collect comics of course. It would be cool if you came up to the Minnesota Conventions.
Favorite books now are X-Men, Ultimate X-Men, Ucanny X-Men all FF books, the batman family of books, Hawkman, BoP, Superman/Batman and Dead @ 17.

Hi,
I thought I already registered, but I can't find my info, so I re-registered. Some of you may recognize from JoeQuesada.com, in the general area, the political area, and Gail's area.
I live in San Francisco, I like fishnets (among other things), and I don't like John Byrne (among other things).

My name's Wayne and I live in Texas, I work as a district manager selling electrical and mechanical industrial control systems and parts for them.
I'm forty years old, and I've been reading comics since about 1968, starting with Spider-man, the Archie stuff, Superman, and JLA.
I read mostly Marvel until the mid-eighties B&W explosion when I learned about great talents like Peter Bagge, The Hernandez Bros, Matt Howarth, R. Crumb, Pekar, Lelong, Mobius,..etc. Then I began to research people like Kurtzman and Eisner, and I have read virtually every published book about the comics industry. I now just read what I like and can afford, and I no longer worry about being a completist or bagging and boxing every comic I buy. They mostly go into a big pile in my office.
I'm a frustrated screenwriter, a film buff to the point of really annoying my wife, and I've always thought that under the right circumstances, I could have been a real Hollywood animal.
My wife and I have three children, one of which is my niece that we adopted out of a bad situation back in 2002. My mother lives with us since last fall, when her fixed income and lack of a nest-egg gave her nowhere else to go. We're glad to have her, and we're living proof that families come in all shapes and sizes.
I found CBR about four months ago, and having endured SHH and the flaming and intolerance that goes on there, I'm extremely happy to have found it.
That's me in a nutshell. (emphasis on "nut")

Hi! My name is Kris Quan. I'm female and majoring in Radio, Television, and Film at the University of North Texas. I live in Rockwall, TX, when I'm not at school.
Comic books I read include: Birds of Prey, Nightwing, Strangers In Paradise, Daredevil, Plastic Man, Outsiders, some X-books, the occasional Bat-book, and virtually anything written by Gail Simone or Grant Morrison.
Also, I'm a huge fan of the TV shows Alias and Lost.

I'm Mat and I'm a denizen of Seattle, Washington. I'm seventeen and I've been reading comics off-and-on for years. My current infatuation with comics has lasted for about eight months now, unless you count reading the Ultimate line only, in which case it's been two years and seven months.
My current favorite comic books are Astonishing X-Men, Plastic Man, Birds of Prey, Teen Titans, and Cable/Deadpool. Favorite bands are The Beatles, The Pillows, Beastie Boys, and Gorillaz. My favorite movies of all time are Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Spirited Away, Pulp Fiction, and the Royal Tenenbaums. And finally, my favorite TV shows are Buffy and Angel.

Hello. My name is Eddy, and I'm a 19 year old male sophomore in college. Majoring in English right now, but that may change...
Anyway, some stuff about me.
Comics I read pretty faithfully: Teen Titans, JLA, Superman/Batman, Birds of Prey, Ultimate Spiderman. And when I have the extra cash I'll pick up oher Bat-books, too. Not much, but I'm a poor college student. Who also likes to blow money on music. Oh yeah, Geoff Johns is my favoritest writer ever. You're only number 3, Gail (right behind Jeph Loeb), sorry.
Bands I like: This could get looong. I'll cut it down to bands I really really like. Malice Mizer, Weezer, Lucifer Luscious Violenoue, hide, Moi dix Mois, Eve of Destiny, X-Japan, Rancid, The Pixies, Balzac, Seagull Screaming Kiss Her Kiss Her (greatest band name ever), Inugami Circus-dan (Second greatest. Circus Troupe of the Dog God), Onmyouza, Lunkhead, Guniw Tools, Nookicky, Bump of Chicken.
I'm also in a band type thing right now. Our working name is Stranger in the Backseat. I play bass. I'm actually much better at guitar, but they already had two guitarists.
I speak a little Spanish. Not enough to count though.
So, uh, that's me.
Pleased to meet you all.

My name is David, from Raleigh, NC. I'm 20, am a student at UNC Wilmington majoring in History, and I work for CVS/pharmacy as a Shift Supervisor. I've been reading comics since before I could actually read (I liked the pretty pictures, go figure). My favorite series (that are still being released) are: Authority, Birds of Prey, Supreme Power, Cable/Deadpool, Superman, Teen Titans, and Ultimate X-Men. If we delve into series that no longer exist, add Deadpool, Stormwatch, Captain Marvel (mostly vol. 3), and Agent X. I'm also an avid gamer, and own a PS2, Xbox, and a brand-spankin' new PC. I just sold my soul to City of Heroes, so if you'll excuse me, I have bad guys to smack around.

Hi I'm Abbas and I'm a recovering Jerichoholic.
It's been sometime now since I've seen Chris Jericho. Ever since I received therapy for it, I havent gone up to any random old lady or crossing card and done a Y2k on it. I'd like to than you for writing such wonderful comics, for giving me something to read while I went into withdrawal and resisted the urge to smack people upside.
Thank you Gail.
Thank you.

My name's Jesse, i'm from California, and i've been reading comics for about six months now. I read a bunch of my friend's Deadpool back issues, which led to me tracking down Agent X, which eventually lead me here after I googled your name. My favorite currently running serieses are Cable/Deadpool, Batgirl, Ultimates, and New Avengers, and I intend to get into Birds of Prey whenever its between arcs. My favorite old series', off the top of my head, are Deadpool, Agent X, Transmetropolitan, Preacher, and Sandman.

History: Been on the board for a while, though I posted far more before the crash. Used to post in this forum a lot back in Gail's Agent X days. I'm an Eagle Scout who happens to also greatly dislike scouting and the outdoors in general(sorry Mattbib. Lotsa bad experiences with the organization). I used to be a stand-up comic and a writer, but I quit the former after I ended up wheelchair-bound for awhile, and haven't really spent much effort going back to it. I also write and read alot, as well as play video games and D&D with friends.

I'm Chris Lang, and I'm lousy at writing bios for myself. But I'll try anyway.
I recently quit my last dead-end job after conditions became intolerable.
I started reading comics as a kid a few years before Crisis on Infinite Earths. I still miss those 'good old days', but there have been a number of comics since then that I've enjoyed greatly (more on that below).
Here are lists of likes and dislikes that I'll probably go into more detail in other threads.
Likes (general): Fantasy, science fiction, 'demented' music such as Weird Al Yankovic, text adventures such as the classic Infocom games
Dislikes (general): Patronizing and/or intelligence-insulting TV shows (and commercials and promos), stupid gender stereotypes (it's got to the point where I can't even stand them as jokes), 'artificial' pop bands that are products of market research and record companies, wars, bigotry, partisan politics, politically-biased TV news that pretends it's not politically-biased, lowbrow comedies (such as most of the Farrely Brothers movies)
Likes (comics): Chris Claremont's classic run on X-Men with John Byrne, Dave Cockrum, Paul Smith, and John Romita Jr., the Paul Levitz era Legion of Super-Heroes, Ambush Bug, Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns, Grant Morrison's Animal Man (particularly the whole concluding story arc), Mark Waid and Alex Ross' Kingdom Come, Mark Waid's run on the Flash, Chuck Dixon's Birds of Prey, Spider-Girl, Mark Waid and Mike Weiringo's Fantastic Four, Joss Whedon and John Cassady's Astonishing X-Men, Gail Simone's Birds of Prey
Dislikes (comics): Comics that are 'grim and gritty' for the sake of being 'grim and gritty', violation of characters to serve story, killing off longtime supporting characters for shock value and cheap angst (Katma Tui and Sue Dibny are my favorite examples of this), over-exposure of Wolverine at Marvel, Chuck Austen's run on Uncanny X-Men and adjectiveless X-Men, 'sensationalistic' subject matter stories such as DC's Identity Crisis and Marvel's 'Sins Past' story in Spider-Man, badly-done 'shakeup' events such as Onslaught/Heroes Reborn, Avengers Disassembled, and DC's Identity Crisis.
There are plenty of other things I could add to these lists, but these are the ones I wanted to list now.

I' Eric, 22, sk716's roommate. I finally got the URL's from Shel so here I am. Yes, I work in retail for now but hope to start an online comic store with one of my friends. I read Deadpool comics(until Gail stopped writing), Green Lantern, The Flash, Batman, Action Comics, BoP, Batgirl, G.I. Joe, Transformers, Spawn, Teen Titans, Daredevil, Soulfire, Robin, Nightwing and pretty much any Bat book or anything Gail writes. I really like video games. Between video games, DnD, and comics, my time is pretty much filled up.
And don't worry Gail, there won't be any marriage proposals for now but give it time. :D

Hiya Gail,
Real names Jay, I'm 34, married with one adorable 5 year old boy. I've got an english major I squander by working on and off in retail. I did co own a comic shop back in the Image, Valiant heyday but found it rather boring after about 6 months and let myself get bought out. I am currently cheifly concerned with making sure my wife makes it to work in the morning and has dinner on the table when she gets home(pays not great but the fringe benifits are). I'm currently a reformed comics junkie who finally managed to get rid of a sizable collection only keeping my beloved Spirit sections. I do currently read...Y: the Last Man, Gotham Central, Birds of Prey, JSA, Fables, Human Target, and pretty much anything Grant Morrison writes. I don't speak any other languages but my wife does tell me I sound more ethnic than her(I'm white, she is black) ;)

I'm a researcher and writer. Mostly non-fiction as I am a student of Indo-European (specifically Germanic) mythology and culture and have written numerous papers. Although I'm hoping my fiction efforts will pay off soon... there's nothing quite so glorious as collecting those rejection slips.
Comic's I read: JLA, JSA, Hawkman, anything by Grant Morrison, the Ultimates (only because Ultimate Thor is the Man), Wonder Woman, 100 Bullets, Adam Strange, New Avengers, Ultimate FF, Conan, Trigger, and various independents. Oh, and as of today, Birds of Prey.

Got it in one. And they forced me to stay in even after the following:
1) a bite from a rapid raccoon and 8 months or painful rabies shots
2) being abandoned for over 12 hours without food or water
3) being hit in the head with a rock, getting a concussion and going into shock from blood loss
and finally...
4)breaking my ankle and having to drive home with said broken ankle for 3 + hours without pain medication.
Let's just say I've had some bad experiences with the organization.

I dabbled in the dramatic arts (writer/actor/director) before developing an incurable allergy to theatre people, then got work helping the clueless and lazy solve basic human/computer interaction problems. *sigh* And I collect vintage videogame consoles and various retro junk.
My current pull list is in flux at the moment, but can/does include: Adam Strange, BoP, Blade of the Immortal, Supreme Power, JSA, Teen Titans, Outsiders, Planetary, and (now) Seven Soldiers. I also spent a lot of time sifting through and rereading my sort-of large back issue collection.
One last thing, I can seem like a real jerk occasionally. Trust me, it's not personal...it's a Boston thing.

Hi there! Napoleandog checking in.
I'm here because my best bud, Kipster directed me this way, but I also recognize a few names. (Been a while, Pip! How ya doing?)
I'm 31 years old and a high school English teacher...teaching American Literature and Ethnic Literature as well as Public Speaking. I just started working on my master's degree in American Literature...thinking of focusing on African-American writers...or Southern writers...haven't quite decided.
I live in South Carolina, formally of the low-country, but now in the foothills.
I'm VERY, VERY selective about what I read. I'm not one of those guys that feels like I need to read EVERYTHING in oreder to keep up with the goings-on of the DCU. I read only DC and I am currently reading Teen Titans, Outsiders (thinking of dropping this pretty soon), Wonder Woman, Aquaman, and JSA (also thinking of dropping). I used to read Birds of Prey but left it when things got a little slow. Kip's been telling me how great it is, so I might pick it up again. Especially if I drop one of the others that I'm not crazy about right now.
I'm more of a lurker than a poster, but I'll try to join in here and there.

Hi everyone, I'm an on-again/off-again lurker who has decided to join the fray.
My name is Scott Edwards, and I'm 36 years old.
I'm a guy, single, and with no kids.
My occupations is an Electronics Repair Petty Officer for the US Navy, which currently has me stationed in San Diego, CA.

Currenty I'm an avid Manga Junkie, but I also pick up Captain America, Birds of Prey, Y: The Last Man, Gold Digger, Planetary (actually, almost anything Ellis is currently putting his name on), and severaly other titles that I -should- remember off the top of my head, but I don't.
As far as languages go, I lived in Japan for three years, and all I really picked up was how to say "I don't speak Japanese".

So anyone know how to change your username. I've settle on 'Ronnie Jackson', because Bob Hope characters are surely as inoffensive as possible :D

I'm Alanna, a 22 year-old student coming to grips with the realization that DC has owned my soul since I was a tiny tot. I read comic books from the library (including reprints of golden-age origin stories) and Mad Magazine as a kid, and got into a brief-but-intense collecting phase from eleven to twelve, and then happily slacked off when I got cable and became infatuated with Batman: The Animated Series. Who needed comics when you had cartoons to fill you in on all the important stuff? This strategy of cartoon dependency worked just fine until my sister introduced me to Sandman. Wanting to avoid launching myself into the dizzying sea of continuity that is the DC universe, I promised myself I'd stick to Sandman and the occasional foray into TBPs of comics turned into summer movies. (I tried Hellboy and bought the two League of Extraordinary Gentlemen TPBs) Then Justice League Unlimited came on and ruined everything. The straw that broke the camel's back was the episode featuring Supergirl, Green Arrow, the Question and a facsimile of Power Girl. I needed to know who these people were. Within weeks of the episode airing I was sampling everything from Action Comics to Wonder Woman and bidding farewell to my cash. Right now my absolute must-reads are: Birds of Prey, Adventures of Superman, Batgirl, Green Arrow, JSA, Robin, Wonder Woman, and that pretty-yet-muddled Question mini, but I've been testing out lots of titles. Goodbye money, I shall miss you.

My Comics: I have to be honest I grew up on Marvel. DC never interested me in the slightest. I tried to get into DC comics so as not to appear close minded. The storytelling is good but to be quite honest the DC universe just does not appeal to me so Im right now reading New Avengers,Astonishing X-men,Uncanny X-men,Stormbreaker,Young Avengers,Supreme Power,New Thunderbolts
As for language I speak and write Spanish but English is what I use 60% of the time

I think I forgot to introduce myself...
Some of you may already know me from other MBs, where I've been known as a staunch supporter of one particular overwhelmingly talented artist (see what I mean? Hey, I never said I was objective!). I usually avoid public MBs like the plague, but I hear Gail's nice an' all... ;)
So Gail, you want to know...

Jordan McLeod, male, 21.
I'm a gas station monkey/attendant, but I aspire to be a professional photographer.
I tend to like more lighthearted comics. Superhero action/comedy type stuff. I'm currently reading New Avengers and Cable/Deadpool, but I've just recently gotten into comics and after reading Gail's run on Deadpool and Agent X I'm definitely going to check out Birds of Prey. She-Hulk, GLA Misassembled, and Formerly Known as the Justice League are some other comics I'll be looking into once I get paid.
My favourite characters are Spider-Man, Silver Sable, Deadpool, Taskmaster, and the Blue Beetle.
Paul from Australia. Married with two kids (SLEEP YOU CURSED URCHINS, SLEEP!!!). Long time DC reader with occassional visits to Marvel. I've always followed writers rather than artists. Always keen to check out what Morrison, Millar, Moore, Ellis, Geoff Johns, Garth Ennis, John Ostrander, BMB, Gail, Chuck Dixon and other reliables are writing. I'm in the Aussie government health sector.
I like my comics with spines, literal and figurative.
I like sleep and food.

EDIT: Not new to the boards, but I'm new to this forum. =P
Evadne
05-03-2005, 10:31 AM
Hi, I'm Evadne. You can call me Eva for short, or my real name, Ang, but Eva's probably easier to remember. Female, as one might assume. I'm pushing 22, which is one of those ages where you start making the "Oh jeez, I'm actually in my twenties" face, I'm beginning to realize.
I'm currently in the process of getting my bachelor's in English, and am employed as an undergraduate teaching assistant and a tutor at the writing center.
I read a number of comics, although that list has grown shorter thanks to a recent decrease in funds. Currently released comics I read are Birds of Prey, JLA: Classified, Legion of Super-Heroes, The Outsiders, New X-Men: Academy X, Runaways, Teen Titans, and Young Avengers. My favorite writers (aside from Gail who is a given, considering I'm posting here) are Mark Waid, Keith Giffen & JM deMatteis, Devin Grayson, Grant Morrison, and Andersen Gabrych.
My favorite characters are Saturn Girl, Cosmic Boy, Ultra Boy, Wildcat, Fire & Ice, Hawk and Dove (in any form, although I confess to a particular fondness for the Hank and Don Hall era), Lilith Clay, and Blue Beetle (both Ted and Silver Age Dan Garrett).
And while I have no particularly useful knowledge of various languages, I'm relatively well-versed in the plays of Euripides and Aristophanes, as well as Victorian literature. (Not particularly helpful, I know.)
Hello, and welcome to all newbies!:)
Don't be scared, so long as you bow and worship regularly, Gail is a kind and fair goddess... I mean, moddess (Freudian, wouldn't you say?;))

So the basics are this...
Name:Richard.
I am an actor that lives out in Los Angeles. 38.
My biggest hobby aside from reading comics is to cook and bake. Taught myself to cook anything that looked or sounded good so it runs the gamut from Boston Cream Pie to Pasta Sauce to stuffing chicken to flavoring vodka.
I've been reading Birds of Prey since the start in Showcase comics waaaay back when, and I think now is the best it's been. As comics go, I buy about 25 a month and almost all are DC with the notable exceptions of Astonishing X-Men and Queen and Country and the occasional indie comic. I should be reading Walking Dead, but I'm not. Not yet. Favorite books include Y: The Last Man, Astro City, JSA, Titans, Manhunter, Adam Strange. I greatly miss Abadazad. I also miss Fallen Angel. (Fables, legends, myth and pulp fiction are my favorites). Also pick up Detective, Doom Patrol, the Superman books, JLA, Legion (since Waid - due to Empire), OMAC, VU, Klarion, Zatanna, Shining Knight, Gotham Central, Green Lantern. Can't wait for more Top Ten. I'm sure there's more to list, but that's all for now.
I also play City of Heroes. Had it for 6 months and barely touched it and now I've been playing the heck out if it since February. I am mostly on Protector, as I've got a bunch of friends there, but seeing the thread here I've popped a couple characters on Virtue as well to see how different it all is. Ironically though, I've got to say that despite being an actor, the whole role play emphasis is a bit intimidating. Shouldn't be. But is. Printed out a dummies guide to RP off of the CoH site. Very detailed and giving me ideas already ranging from the dramatic to the flat-out fun. We will see.
Joined up cause from what I've read there are alot of interesting topics and alot of interesting folk round here and I wanted to throw my voice into the ring.
See you round.

Why join CBR?: 5 years of lurking is long enough, it is time to come out of the closet.
Comic Related Interests: I have become a comic fan by-proxy, marrying into the family so to speak. I have a remedial knowledge of the industry, some current and old titles. I have been to the Portland Con a buncha times. One time there was this one writer there named "Gayull", who I hear "writes purdy gud fer a gurl."
*Rumors about CBR members: Lauren Dougherty thinks wearing Lederhosen makes her look sexy, TCJohnson keeps all sorts of things in his pants, Jennifer de Vries is NOT mean (as some certain writers proclaim), PaladinZero likes long walks on the beach, rock climbing, and a good sense of humor, and Gail Simone...her rumor is just too too awful to tell.....for now.
*these are just rumors and have no basis in fact whatsoever. (Except for Gail's)

I'm -- well, my user name is it. (;
Call me E.
I alternate between cool, interesting jobs and retail. Right now, I'm doing both -- not gonna elaborate right now!
Gail's been dropping by the message board I usually hang at (Dixonverse) and dropped invitations to the posters there enough that I finally decided to drop by.
I read... what I can get ahold of. Comics are scarce 'round these parts, and I'm weird -- I like to flip through 'em before I buy. (Not to be confused with 'Byrne-stealing.')

Hey Gail...followed you over from the dc BOP forum - so cool of you to be 'one of the gang'--
My name's Jon, but my friends and co-workers call me Jack (cause coincidentally enough my fav cartoon is Samurai Jack, my fav guitarist is Jack White, fav actor Jack Nicholson, and there're more 'Jacks' but I'll spare everyone). I've been a comic fan since I was a wee boy...grew up in a small town, but was able to buy Amazing Spidey issues back in the Larsen days.
I'm now living in Colorado Springs, CO as a Book Development Asst. for Cook Communications (a publishing company) where I proofread manuscripts, edit content, etc.
I loved Deadpool when you were on it...then I followed you over to Agent X and BOP and haven't regretted a step. I currently follow most of the 'Ultimate' titles of Marvel, BOP of course, Batgirl (very underrated), Amazing Spidey, Batman, X-23, Punisher, New Avengers, Runaways, Action Comics--now...heh, Astonishing X, Trigun manga, anything by Mike Turner--Fathom, Soulfire.
Ciao, Gail - best of luck
PS: "Hey" to everyone here also.

I just started reading comics again after a long hiatus so im trying to get up to speed with whats going on. Maybe its just me but the quality of the writing has become alot better in comic books from about 10 years ago. There are so many good comic books out there that it is hard to buy all of them without draining my poor wallet.
Anyways, keep up the good work, Gail, and I have enjoyed the stuff you have written so far. :)

Name: Gilda
Gender: Female
Age: 28
Occupation: Teacher
Comics: Oh, way too many to list. Pretty much all of the core DC and Marvel books. My current favorites are Supreme Power, Fables, Y: The Last Man, Walking Dead, Astonishing X-Men, Daredevil, Small Gods, Trigger, Fantastic Four, Invincible, Birds of Prey, Legion of Superheroes, and Strangers in Paradise, though not neccesarily in that order. Also trade reprints of Modesty Blaise and Krazy Kat.
Favorite Writers: Brian K. Vaughn, Mark Waid, Kurt Busiek, Bendis, Peter David, Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, Garth Ennis, Robert Kirkman, Grant Morrison, Jeph Loeb, Geoph Johns, Terry Moore, and the esteemed moderator of this forum.
Languages: I uh, had one year of French in junior high school 15 years ago. I think I remember the numbers, letter names, and maybe three or four phrases.
Bio: I've been reading comic books for most of the last 20 years, starting with big boxes of discards my mom would buy me at garage sales, mostly Harvey stuff at first, but a little later on a bunch of those little DC digests and the Marvel reprints of the early Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, and Hulk books. Those, and the Adventure digests reprinting the early LOSH are what hooked me.
Technically still single (because of a certain law with a positively Orwellian name), but definitely firmly and permanently connected to a woman who simply does not understand why any grown person would willingly spend this much time, money, and energy on comic books, but who nonetheless indulges me. Oh, she'll read A History of Violence or Road to Perdition or Maus, but those aren't really comic books, those are graphic novels, so they don't count.
No kids yet, but planning on it within the next couple of years.
I found this board while doing google search for when Peter and Mary Jane were married, which popped up a thread here involving Kurt Busiek debating the effects of Peter's marriage on the character, which was polite, well-reasoned, and strongly defended on both sides, and which was a blast to read. I spent most of yesterday reading here and decided this would be a good place to hang out.

I am brand new here, this is my first post actually :)
Well, here goes.
Name:Robert Ryan
Gender: Male
Age: 19
Occupation: Student
Comics: I am a huge X-Men nut, so almost anything involving them that does not have Igor Kordey involved, Birds of Prey, that is probably my favorite series right now. I loved Gen 13 before Adam Warren got his hands on it (sorry to all Adam Warren fans), I really enjoyed Batman: Hush, The Killing Joke, and The Long Halloween
Favorite Writers: I don't want to sound like a drooling fanboy, but you definately, Jeph Loeb, Chris Claremont, Grant Morrison, Scott Lobdell, and too many others to name here
Languages: None very fluently, I had Spanish in High School, but I couldn't tell you much other than saying really basic stuff like where is the bathroom, what I like and don't like, and how to say the guarentee is good for two years (from working at Best Buy lol)
Bio: I have been drawing almost every day since I was about three, it's just always been my biggest passion in life, even when I was a wee little thing. I wanted to be a Disney animator at first, but around nine I fell in love with comics and haven't looked back since. I have been drawing and practicing in the comic book style since then, and am very very serious about pursuing a career in comic book art. I am going to a community college right now to get some general education classes out of the way, before I transfer to a university to study art, and improve my own, before I start sending my portfolio places and hoping for the best. Right now all I have in terms of a portfolio, are some of my more recent artworks on my deviantart profile. I am still working on a nice, professional looking and diverse portfolio before I send it anywhere.
I have a superhero team that I created in Jr. High and have been working with and updating ever since, and that team and their universe is a big passion of mine. Some day, if God be willing, and I become an established comic book artist, I would love to see that team hit the racks of a comic book store and do well, that would pretty much be the ultimate accomplishment I could think of in terms of a career...
I found this board while doing google search, and am ecstatic to have found it, and even more so at the possibility of communicating with someone whose I admire and respect as much as I do yours...jeez, I sound like such a fanboy, shutting up now...
Anything else you'd like to know or have I pretty much covered all angles?

Gender: Female
Age: 21
Occupation: Film librarian/researcher; student
Fave Comics: (included current & defunct) Catwoman, Batgirl, Birds of Prey, Goon, Blue Monday, Gotham Central, Leave it to Chance, The Simpsons & B.P.R.D. TPB's I love are Hush, Terror and The Long Halloween. I've just recently gotten back into comics (and before I didn't really read any DC or Marvel) so I'm still looking for stuff to latch onto.
I'm sad enough to buy almost any story featuring Catwoman, Harley Quinn Cassandra Batgirl, and to a lesser extent Poison Ivy- they're my fave characters.
Writer-wise, there's Ed Brubaker, Greg Rucka, Gail Simone (ya think?) Jeph Loeb, Paul Dini, Darwyn Cooke, Chynna Clugston-Major, Mike Mignola and Doug Moench.
Fluent with: sadly nothing but english (and even that's debatable), but I'm halting in French. I'm working on it though!

Hi, Gail, et al!
My name is Jim Crocker, and I'm the owner of a relatively new (Opened Sept 2002) comic book store in Northampton, MA, called Modern Myths (www.modern-myths.com). The store is a full-time, full-line shop, and we're happy to report that we're doing very well, showing steady growth and bringing in new customers all the time, and your work has certainly been some part of that success.
I am looking forward to contributing to the discussion as time allows during our busy days at the store.
Thanks for taking the time to play host, Gail! Will you be at the Boston Wizard World, by any chance?
EDIT: I almost forgot the 'Vitals':
I'm Male, 36, Married. I don't speak anything other than English, but my comic-book loving, 'BoP' fan-fic writing wife is fluent in about 5 languages, among them Russian and Czech (Russian Lit PhD candidate).
As you might imagine, I read a lot more comics than just the ones I'd regularly spend my own money on, but a few that I find myself consistently recommend ing these days include BoP (of course!), Walking Dead, Y the Last Man, Runaways, Daredevil, Morrison's Seven Soldiers books, Ex Machina, Planetes, Battle Royale, Berserk, Astro City, Finder, Distant Soil (when it comes out!), Desolation Jones, etc. It's a pretty big list, and seems to be getting bigger lately, a good sign! I'm happy to answer questions from the 'berhind the counter' prspective, and pretty free with general info about what it's like to be a retailers and what's involved.
If anyone is really curious about everything involved in setting up a comic book store, go check out our LiveJournal (http://www.livejournal.com/users/modernmyths) . Go ALL the way back to the earliest posts (http://www.livejournal.com/users/modernmyths/2002/07/12/) and you'll get a blow-by-blow and pics of our setting up. Stop by and say hello if you're ever in New England!

Hello, all. I just recently found these boards, and have really grown to enjoy reading the various threads and (occasionally) throwing in my 2 cents.
Before I get on to my introduction, I really want to say that I love the idea of this particular board. I have to admit that I haven't read any of Gail's work, although I had been looking for a good "jumping in" point in Birds of Prey since I first saw the title and remembered the shortlived television show of the same name. But, even with no direct experience with her work, I still love the idea of writers having such a direct line to their fans. Of course, if the writer turns out to be a pompous ass, then the good idea doesn't work as well, but in the short time I've been lurking here, it has already become evident that Gail is not at all like that.
Anyway, here's my info:
Name: James
Occupation: Software Developer
Comics: Superman/Batman, Supergirl (I'm a Loeb fan), Green Lantern, Wolverine, Supreme Power, Pulse, Angel, Serenity, Ultimates, Ultimate FF, Runaways, and just about anything the guy at my comic shop says, "Hey, you should check this out!" about.
I also collect Ultimate Spidey, Ultimate X-men, Astonishing X-men, Daredevil, Fables, Y: The Last Man, and some discontinued titles in TPBs and HCs
Languages: Unfortunately, I have a short attention span and a lot of interests, so I can butcher Japanese and Spanish, but have not really had the stick-to-it-iveness to really become fluent in anything.
I guess that's about it. Hope I didn't get too long winded.
Oh yeah, not that I think it's a requirement for the board or anything, but I wanted to add that I'm going to be picking up BoP: Of Like Minds. I'm a big fan of using TPBs to introduce myself to a new title (or writer, as the case may be).

Occupation: Accountant
Fave Comics: Anything published in the last 50 or 60 years - I have the ability to read any comic - no matter how bad. I have an entire run of Guardians of the Galaxy (plus spin offs) not too mention many 80's marvel mini series that should never have seen the light of day (Wolfpac?!?). Of the comics being published today I Adventures of Superman, Action Comics, Young Avengers, Runaways, Flash, JSA, JSA Classified, Breach, Doom Patrol, Fables, New Thunderbolts, anything related to Infinite Crisis (I'm the person who loves multi part universe spanning crossovers) and many more. Will buy anything drawn by John Byrne or written by Peter David.
Languages: Just English - although fluent in 'Geek' and 'Nerd' to a high level.
Other Interesing Things: I live in Brighton, UK with my boyfriend of 4 years (today - yay for us) Marc. Also enjoy computer games (on any format), books (mostly Science Fiction and Fantasy) and films & tv shows (again geared towards the fantasy theme).

Name: Lisa
Age: 23
Gender: Female
Occupation: Military job. I used to work Air Traffic Control, but I was truly truly awful at it. The Texas skies are a much safer place now that I use a wrench and a hammer in Oklahoma.
Base of Operations (Former): Scranton, PA; San Antonio, TX
Base of Operations (Current): Oklahoma City, Ok
Currently Reading: Infinite Crisis Lead-ins, Green Lantern, Birds of Prey, Gotham Central, The Flash, JLA (During Johns' arc), Seven Soldiers, JSA, Marvel's Ultimate stuff (Though I'm dropping this book by book, it seems), Action Comics (Since Sacrifice), Wonder Woman, Planetary, and whatever else catches my interest in the store
Interests: Obscure Females in Folktales/Myths, Discworld novels, Pre-Thomas Malory Arthurian Fiction (See here (http://ragnell.blogspot.com/2005/09/character-parallel-game-night-of.html) for a comparison to Green Lantern characters), Canonical Sherlock Holmes, Astrology, Metaphysics, Ghost-hunting (Completely serious here, I have a friend who takes us to haunted places in the hopes of catching one on camera like his cousin did), Jungian Archetypes, Tarot Reading, Spiritual Dream Interpretation, and generally anything that helps me keep a busy mind.
Origin: Another young girl brought into the seedy comic world by her wicked older sister. I used to post here in the late 90s. I specifically started about a month before JLA #16 came out, lured here by the opportunity to share my wild ideas with other people before the new mystery roster was released. Even today, I enjoy waiting and speculating about the story more than the actual story about 75% of the time!
- - - The most interesting thing about me (and I only feel comfortable posting this because of the Anton LaVey jokes earlier) is actually why I haven't posted here in about 6 years. I was busy experiencing a religious realignment. This means I discovered that Religion is basically a suit of clothes that you wear over your Spirituality, and mine (Bleak Goth Agnostic) didn't fit at all. So I went on a whirlwind shopping trip, where I tried on all sorts of different styles -- Buddhist, Methodist, Catholic, Mormon, Unitarian -- I even fitted for Jehovah's Witnesses when they came to the door!
I ended up with some green and brown New Age clothes that I would have laughed at in High School, an athame and a hyperactive black cat. I'm expecting a Jupiter Return in late October, but my impending promotion implies professional growth instead of something more spiritual.
- - - If I learned anything from this (aside from enough knowledge of each major religion to carry on a conversation with a theologist and not sound like an idiot!), it's that if you present your wierdness on the first impression, no bothers you for anything you do afterwards.
- - - I came back to the online community on the DCMB actually, due to Crisis on Infinite Wallets, looking for rumors to feed my ravenous imagination. I don't have the willpower to lurk, but I kept my posting habit down until I was voluntold for the Night Shift. Hard to keep any semblance of a social life when the only people awake are across the world.
- - - Anyway, I go by Ragnell (Sir Gawain's wife in what is IMHO the best Arthurian story ever written -- at least until I finally find a copy of Les Merveilles de Rigomer) in my blog (http://ragnell.blogspot.com) and on the DCMB and ComicBloc Forums, but I chose the more traditional Patience here, on the off chance soemone remembered me, and because this place apparently had a crash or something that meant I didn't have to try and remember my old password. :)
Languages: I speak fluent New-Agese, which is composed of pseudo-scientific sounding terms and often-mispronounced words lifted from ancient languages. I also speak Astrologer, if anyone gets confused by that sort of thing.
How comes all the womenfolk 'rond these here parts is smart 'n all?:p
Welcome back!:) (I'm technically MUCH newer than you, but you was here first, darn it!)

Hello, Gaile and the CBC crowd!
Name: I prefer to keep it private, just call me Messchird
Gender: Male
Age:16
Country I live in: New Zealand.
Occupation: Just a High school student though I am a amateur cartoonist who started in 1993 with help of Mum. I started to draw my own cartoons in 1995 and created my longest ever cartoon, Messchird in 1999, which is still going strong.
Comics I like: Punch, MAD, Simpsons, Futurama and insane DC covers.
Any languages I speak fluently aside from English: NZSL ( NZ sign Language) Also, some American sign. Yeppers, I'm deaf.
Interests: Satire, chocolate, comics, art and reading.
Religion: Atheism
3Horn
09-12-2005, 05:43 PM
Name: 3Horn AKA Reverend 3Horn, AKA Jammer, AKA Wombat, AKA Marq
Gender: Male
Age:33
Country I live in: USA: (although it was tempting to simply put "Texas").
Occupation: Professional Geek, former lifeguard, US Navy Aircrewman
Comics I like: Hrmm...I've gotten away from commercial comics to a large degree, primarily due to cost and availability. Having to hunt down a comic shop and plunk down a sizable bit of cash seemed to be a bit much considering how brief it seems the books themselves have become. Granted, the artwork and stories themselves are of much greater quality than the old newsprint ones I bought for a quarter at 7-Eleven twenty-five years ago, but damn, $2.50 adds up quick when you're buying a dozen or so at a time.
Luckily, I have the patience to wait for TPBs when they're available, and I can usually sate my appetite through webcomics (though I've gotten woefully behind on them as well).
I've really enjoyed what DD has done with their GI Joe series, call it a bit of my childhood catching up with me.
Any languages I speak fluently aside from English: Drunkenese, I learned it while in the Navy.
Interests: Writing, although I haven't done anything worthwhile in years.
I'm also an amateur actor (primarily improv work that doesn't involve porn-though I'm not against that).
I'm big into politics, and other topics that are best not discussed in the midsts of impressionable youth.
I was once a writer for a failed comic. Well, failed in the sense of we made a bad decision to attempt to debut it at WorldCon in 97, not realizing that WC tends to frown on anything that actually has images and does not consist solely of text.
Religion: The closest I've found to my personal beliefs is Unitarian-Universalism.

Comics I enjoy: Seven Soldiers (and pretty much anything Grant Morrison writes), Action Comics, Birds of Prey, Plastic Man, Gotham Central, Runaways, Young Avengers, Marvel Team-Up, Astro City, Justice, Adam Strange mini (I know it ended a few months ago, but it was so awesome)
Comics I'm looking forward to: All-Star Superman, Jonah Hex, She-Hulk v2 and The Thing (Dan Slott rocks!), Warlord, The Brave and the Bold and I'll probably pick up many many DC books when we get to One Year Later because each book should be telling their own, unique story again... plus I bet there will be a lot of good stuff after OYL.
Languages: I'm trying to become multi-lingual. Right now I'm studying Norwegian, Spanish and American Sign Language. While I'm not 100% there, I'm closest to being fluent in ASL.

It was easier to ship them once rather than twice. Therefore I don't plan on working again until next year or I've caught up on them all, whichever comes first.
Languages: You'd think after almost 7 years here I'd be fluent in Japanese...but nope. I do know the words for pervert though which come in handy if you travel during peak hour on the Tokyo subways.

Hey Gail and all other Yabs folk.
My name is Arrjay as you have probably already deduced. That's not my real name but I'm not really gonna post my real name to anyone I don't really know that well. I suffer from intense paranoia.
I've only recently started to post in Yabs so I figured I'd best introduce myself as this thread suggests in it's famous and well-distinguished title.
Anyway, I'm a guy and I love the Marvel Ultimate comics. Most people hate them on the Marvel board though. I also read some of the regular Marvel titles as well; Amazing Spider-Man, Avengers/New Avengers. As far as D.C titles are concerned I read some Batman titles and I read the first 22 issues of Superman/Batman but then I dropped it. I also love the Hellboy books and outside of that I read Shannon Wheeler's angst-ridden Too Much Coffee Man and I also like a little Megaman: NT Warrior once in a while.
I work in a library shelving and finding books for people and I really like it. I'm thinking of pursuing library science at some time in the future and I truly look forward to it. It's not happening any time soon though. Too many other financial obligations that my wife and I have to attend to. I also write and draw my own little science-fiction comedy comic that I seriously need to do more work on. I've been inadvertently neglecting it lately. Naughty me.
I don't really speak any languages fluently but I know a little Spanish as I have spent some time in Latin America in the past and my wife grew up there so she speaks it very well. I'm sure that she actually thinks in Spanish and then translates her thoughts to English when they become spoken word.
Anyway, I'll learn more and more Spanish as time goes on I guess.
Well, that's pretty much all that I have to say about anything right now and I feel I've rambled on quite sufficiently. Consider yourselves introduced.
Thanks.
Ciao.

Hello, new poster here.
Special K, female, editor/videographer, I dabble (I liked a mini series called "Extinction Event" but I was disappointed with how it ended... I'm reading some Superman/Batman now; I like Marvel Ultimate stuff, but haven't gotten really far into it; and I like Daredevil. Oh, and my husband's comic, very cool stuff!!), I'm bilingual Spanish/English and speak a little French. Not too much though, not fluent by any means, but I like to practice!
Any particular reason?

Hello Gail and everyone,
I'm an IT administrator working for a Pharmacy Benefits manager, prior to that I worked for a computer manufacturer and a television listings company.
About 6 years ago I was diagnosed with testicular cancer but caught it in time. Luckily for me it's very treatable with a high recovery rate. Guys, make sure you check things out from time to time. If you feel like you've been racked for a day or two go to the doctor!
I speak a smattering of French and German. (sad, since I'm half-French and I lived in Germany for 6 years)
I'm a long-time comic book reader, Spider-man is my favorite character of all time though my favorite series is Neil Gaiman's Sandman.
I was mainly a Marvel reader growing up though I read the Legion of Super Heroes and World's Finest when I could get my hands on them. Being an Army brat meant it was hard to keep up with books sometimes not too mention affording them all. Most of my collection from those days came from garage sales and flea markets.
Right now I'm buying all the Seven Soldiers issue (great stuff) and the Infinite Crisis books, Amazing Spider-Man, Ult. Spidey, most of JMS' stuff, Rex Mundi, Y the Last Man, Ex Machina, Fables and Legion. I give some credit to Gail for getting back into comics after the crap that went on during the 90's. Her run on Deadpool was great and reminded me of how fun comics could be. All the Spider clone crap and the gimmick covers and variants put off the super hero books for a long time, so, thanks Gail!

A comic book fan since about 1980, off and on
Had a short comic book story I wrote (drawn by John Torrisi) published in NO JUSTICE NO PIECE II by HEAD PRESS back in...I wanna say 1997. High point of my creative life was having Tony Isabella review the book on TONY'S ONLINE TIPS after I got to meet him and give him a copy at WIZARD WORLD CHICAGO that year (it may have been the first year it was officially called a Wizard World). He referred to my short as one of the gems in the book. I think I lived off that as my only sustenance for about 2-3 weeks.
I frequent Newsarama much more often than I frequent CBR, but its going to get more balanced out now that I've found this lil gem of a forum. I'm a fan of Gail's work...started with BoP and eventually decided she was a "brand" I could trust. :D

Hello All,
Here's my info:
Name: Jesϊs. (Anyone who saw the previous Curb Your Enthusiasm knows how it's pronounced.)
Gender: Male
Age: Even on the Internet, a man's entitled to a little dignity, so I respectfully decline to answer.
Occupation: College History Prof
Comics I read (in order of how obsessively I bug my local Comic Store Person by asking her, "Is the lastest ... out yet?"): Birds of Prey; Catwoman; Sea of Red; Polly and the Pirates; She-Hulk; New Avengers; Ultimate X-Men; Spider-Girl; Wonder Woman; Age of Bronze; Schizo
I really enjoyed some of what Grant Morrison did with X-Men 114-154;
As a boy I collected Spider Woman, and am happy she's at the center of the Marvel Universe;
I grew up with Spider-Man but I'm sad to say I think the whole franchise is being driven off a cliff;
I like Joe Matt's Peepshow, but it seriously looks like the guy will never produce another issue;
I found Villains United to be brilliant; the best of the Infinite Crisis lead-ins
I speak Spanish fluently

I am an old man with a wonderful wife of 20 years and four great kids. I grew up on comics, and drifted away in college. I began buying comics for my older children when they got into school, and it was BOP that brought me back into the fold.
Was in technology for most of my life, and one of my children died. We needed to do something different, and we ended becoming missionaries in Kenya. We feed ten thousand children lunch a day, and are building solar computer centers at every school we provide food for. We work among the poorest of the poor.
Hungry kids get me so sad; comic books have become a good place for me to hide and recharge.

You can call me Trey. It's not my real name, but it's a name, so I roll with it. I've been reading comics since I was two or three, and have been a fan off and on ever since. I'm not too much for words, so I'll end it here.

I've posted a bit around here, so I figure I might as well introduce myself.
The name comes from my first character I made in a game called Warhammer 40,000. I use it on various other message boards around the internet (Penny Arcade and Gaia Online, mostly).
I'm a younger guy, sophomore in college. I started reading comics in the early '90s, and follwed them up to the Spider-Man clone saga, which combined with the lack of anything cool on DCs side, drove me away from comics. I've recently gotten back into it, thanks to a friend who loaned me his collection of Transmetropolitan and the Sandman. Kingdom Come and The Dark Knight Returns also fueled my reinterest in the genre.
Besides comics (which I love), I'm sort of an omni-dork. I play tons of pen and paper RPGs (Dungeons and Dragons, Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay, Shadowrun, Marvel Universe RPG, and some homebrew stuff), and I've been playing video games since 1988-ish. I've owned every version of the Gameboy, the Sega Genesis, 32X, and Dreamcast, the NES and SNES, Sony's PSX/1 and PS2, and the Xbox. I've been playing computer games since 1997 or so. My favorite computer game is a tie between three frontrunners: Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War, and Sid Meier's Civilization II. Favorite console games run the gamut from Gunstar Heroes and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 to Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, Half-Life 2, Halo 2 and a dozen others.
Besides all of that, I'm a member of my university's anime club. I really like Naruto, Trigun, Hajime no Ippo, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Princess Mononoke, and Akira. I also have a subscription to America's monthly Shonen Jump. I've been an anime fan ever since the early '90s, waking up at 6AM to watch Sailor Moon and DragonBall Z.
My current pull list:
Action Comics
Green Lantern
Green Lantern: Recharge
Infinite Crisis (the Perez covers)
Street Fighter II
Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man
The Ultimates

Name's Leanne. I've lurked around here for a long while now, but only today took the time to register.
I've been collecting and reading comics for about 15 years now. I'm a DC gal at heart, but I also enjoy a lot of independent titles.
I have worked in the comic book industry as an illustrator and editor, and still do freelance illustration work (mostly for the toy company Hasbro these days). But my heart will always belong to comics.
That about sums me up!

Hi there!
I'm Rebecca, I'm 30 and this is my second post at this board. I'm a mother, illustrator, doll artist, etc. Have one daughter and one son on the way. My husband and I are both in comics, though he far more than I.
I've loved comics since I was little, starting with Betty and Veronica (I had crushes on both of them). After that it was years of the old Mad Digests, followed years later by Ghost, Dream Corridor, Beautiful Stories for Ugly Children, Sandman, and anything of Vertigo in the early 90's. My favorite book then was Kill Your Boyfriend. I also liked most everything by Grant Morrison, Jon Muth, J.M. DeMatteis (sp?) and weird stuff like Rogan Gosh.
These days I read Strangehaven, Runaways, still reading Strangers in Paradise, and a few others. :)
p.s. Hi Gail! *waves*

I'm Stephen H. Segal -- the "H." being there to hopefully help me not get confused with either Steven Seagal or Steven T. Seagle.
Formerly a newspaper/magazine editor in Pittsburgh, where I covered comics and science fiction-related topics at every possible opportunity. Recently moved to Washington D.C. when my fiancee's employer sent her to work here. Currently planning the startup of a new national geek magazine!
Love the works of Laurie Anderson, Frank Herbert, Garry Trudeau, Madeleine L'Engle, Douglas Hofstadter, Neil Gaiman, Warren Zevon, Dan Bern, among others. Grew up on the (southern) New Jersey shore. The new Doctor Who series makes me very, very happy.
Gail Simone, you're super cool.
