I'm talking to someone who says they have an original detective comics #27 and are wanting to sell it. but aside from the picture i have of the cover, I have no clue it is an original or reprint. does anyone know how i can tell an original from a fake? I'd really like to know this before i throw out the $$$ for it.

I would suggest taking it to a neutral third party for an evaluation. You might have to shell out a few bucks to do so but better that than shelling out $35K for a Famous First Edition tabloid from the '70s.

I summon the extreme caution, buddy!

This isn't the sort of book one should ever buy without checking it out in person first.

Most likely this is an inexpensive reprint, or maybe a Famous First Edition.

Is this someone is a nationally reputed dealer? Is the book certified for a grade and potential restoration by a third-party company like CGC? If the answer to both questions are no, then be very careful.

Whatever you do, make sure you're able to thoroughly examine the book in hand.

I actually held, in my hands, a real one, back in 2000. The cover was detached, but otherwise it was intact. It went for $25,000!!

How much is the seller asking? If you don't need to take out a 2nd mortgage on your home, then it probably isn't real. :D
