View Full Version : Nicieza VS Bendis?

Has anyone else noticed the Fabian Nicieza seems to have it in for Bendis? Every now and then in Cable & Deadpool, there's a remark about about the New Avengers or how the Thunderbolts are supposed to kick the Avengers asses. I pick up titles from both writers, but Nicieza's smack-talk does seem to throw off my focus when reading. I mean, it all kinda seems mean spirited. I think it's one thing to rib each other every now and then, but come on. Bendis even mentioned on Jinxworld.com that he thinks Fabian wants to punch him. Does anyone know why? Hopefully they can settle this before we have another 'Biggie/Tupac' situation.

I've always found the comments in Cable & Deadpool referring to Bendis to be extremely poignant and hilarious. I don't know if he's got anything against him. Fabe lurks around here. Give some time, maybe he'll answer your question himself. Then again, maybe be won't out of professional coutesy.

Bendis also has made some comments in his sites Q&A and other interviews...
I can't tell if their joking (Kinda of like Kirkman and Bendis do) or if their is actually some bad blood between to the two.

Some would consider what Bendis has done to the Avengers to be mean-spirited. He basically took a big steaming dump on some popular heroes during Disassembled. Then he brought in a bunch of experienced outsiders as New Avengers and has had them act like incompetent amateurs that need to call for help nearly every arc. Fabian is probably just a serious Avengers fan who resents what was done to his heroes. Besides, the way Bendis writes them, nearly anybody can beat the New Avengers.

Yeah I've seen him around here before. I'd appreciate any help he could give.
Or even Bendis for that matter...

my thinking, going by what I've read in latest D/C (which I got for Luke Cage appearance) is that it's gentle ribbing.
I think Fabian is putting in print what a lot fans have gripes over the way NA is going.
Espionage is good and all, but I like my Avengers to be planet saving superheroes. I'm not a massive fan of slow exposition building up to 1/2 issues of action.

I wonder if the charactors of the New Avengers had much higher power levels if the complaints would still be valid?

The current members of the New Avengers are all very experienced and very competent heroes, but Bendis writes them like they are incompetent rookies. Help, Dr. Strange, save us! Help, Emma Frost, save us!

Help, Emma Frost, save us!Yeah, maybe they´re not the first heros you would think of when you need a team to save the planet from destruction but they can do better than what Bendis is showing them do at the moment.
And Ninjas! So they get to face ninjas? Ninjas are guys that Wolverine beats up in his mini-series. They´re not the kind of enemies that you pit against the worlds mightiest heros.

If it was real bad blood, do you actually think it would ever see print? Serious, who is higher up on the food chain at Marvel right now?

the only charactors i have serious questions about in terms of how they will be used are luke cage and spiderwoman.......i mean spiderman has twice their strength and fight ability. Luke cage can lift what? 2 tons? bulletproof skin at most? what use is that against their big time enemies.

According to the recent Handbook, Luke can now lift 25 tons. He was always able to lift considerably more than 2 tons, and he fought Spider-man to a stalemate in their first two encounters:

Guys, let's pull back a little on the analysis of the NEW AVENGERS lineup. That's more of an Avengers Board discussion.

Well I have that Bendis was slagging off Nicieza's mum. And that's how it all started off

If there was really a problem, I don't think you'd see it in the comic pages.

Fabian - Wost. EIC. Ever.
I only mention this because of the irony, mentioning editing and spelling worst wrong.
That said, there was so much wrong at Acclaim beyond Fabian's hands it's rediculous to try to lay all the blame in his lap. Acclaim was actually putting out some damn good stories, but apart from starting the new phase of the company right at the peak of the comics bust, they were being backed by Acclaim the video game company, which is all the financial security of being backed by Enron. But there was a hell of a lot of good talent putting out some actually really good stories under the label.

Fabian'll make fun of his own things in his comics, like C/D.
Like when he made fun of Skornn's name (since he wrote the X-Force mini.)
Or the jokes he cracks in EVERY recap page.
He's just a dude with a sense of humor.

And pretty much everything that he's made fun of in the book is the most important thing going on in comics at the time. I mean, Enema of the State, do you think he has something against Mark Millar?
The funny thing is, I thought all this came off far more lighthearted, far more nudge nudge wink wink, than PAD's goof on Ultimate Cap in... I think it was MK Spidey. You know, how Cap would never hit on a married woman.
On the other hand, I remember a story that had him macking on Baron Zemo's wife during the war. Or her on him. Something like that.

Fabian's trying to cash in on Bendis' success and laugh at him at the same time.
"Look at the New Avengers! YAY! Now watch my team kick their butts!"

He's just a dude with a sense of humor.I agree. Fabian Nicieza has the common sense to make his titles fun and lighthearted instead of doing the gloom and doom thing everybody else does. But if he really does something against the New Avengers I say more power to him.

True. Acclaim's relaunch was pretty much buggered from the get-go. That said (and without comparing to the previous Valiant titles), X-O Manowar, Turok, Trinity Angels, Troublemakers & Eternal Warriors were all pretty good. Although Kurt Busiek's Ninjak was a bit of a stinker (can't help but suspect that direction for the character was mandated by the computer side of the business), and Magnus' only redeeming feature was Mike McKone.
As far as this 'grudge' thing goes, as someone else has noted it wouldn't see print if that's what it was. These guys do have the same editors; it's just a bit of fun. Plus, I can't see it as Fabian's a genuinely nice guy. Never interacted with BMB, but he seems pretty decent too - I might not like how some of his stuff turns out, but he has a lot of talent.

Really? Wow. I'd like to hear what issue this happened in, if you could remember it.

I imagine it's all just playful joking around. Marvel wouldn't let writers openly air out their personal problems on the page. At least, I don't think they would.
Fabe lurks around here.
Maybe I'll get a chance to ask him how to pronounce his last name.

Please do! I had to go to Marvel.com to figure out how to spell his name so I could post this thread!

That seems logical. However, in recent years, it seems like Marvel editors don't do much editing. Lots of scheduling problems, continuity errors, and general lack of planning.
