It is kind of a stupid rant to make when the person running the Marvel Universe right now(Bendis) and writting some of the stories that she is talking about, is Jewish.

I think the rant broke my brain. Grant Morrison is a snobby aristocratic racist? The same Grant Morrison who seems to loathe snobs, aristocrats and racists? And he wrote supervillain Magneto as a supervillain because he's anti-Semitic? And a comparison of Nazi justifications for genocide and White House justifications for the Iraq War means Millar's saying Holocaust victims deserved what they got? And Jewish writer Bendis is anti-Semitic? And MY BRAIN HURTS.

It's tricky...you have to bash your head against the toilet seat for a good three or four hours and then eat all of the pills in the medicine cabinet.

Then it kiiiinda starts to make a little sense.

You'll still see most of the holes in the argument, and you'll still think Mrs. Cockrum needs to be safely locked away from normal people, but you can almost sorta get your brain to a point where it could conceive of such ridiculous ideas.

I always perceived Claremont's retcon of Magneto as a Holocaust survivor as a statement that the road to hell is paved with good intentions, and that, to quote Nietzsche, "He who fights with monsters might take care lest he thereby become a monster." And that is exactly what happened with Magneto: he became a monster. He was so obsessed with preventing a mutant Holocaust that he adopted the tactics of the Nazis, and he came to see mutants as superior to humans.

As a Jew, I think it is more narrow-minded and short-sighted to insist that all fictional Jewish characters must be written in a positive light. I suppose that means that members of any other ethnic or religious group that has also been oppressed in the past also cannot be cast in the role of the villain. Which leaves us exclusively with a bunch of WASP bad guys. How utterly boring.

You could also create an argument to the contrary that Marvel portrays Jewish characters like Kitty Pryde and Ben Grimm as noble and heroic, while Catholic characters like Matt Murdock and Kurt Wagner literally take on the appearance of demons.

I don't remember the comics ever stating that Magneto was Jewish and not, for example, a gypsy, just that he escaped from a concentration camp (and if he survived, it's even less likely that he's Jewish). So, Cockrum may be having a rant about the anti-Semitic portrayal of a character who's not even Jewish...

I could definitely be wrong about the details, so take this with a grain of salt...but there was an issue of UXM (during the John Romita Jr. days) where Magneto and Kitty both went to Temple on a day of remembrance.

Not rock solid proof that he's Jewish, but a little more evidence in that direction.
