It doesn't work like that. In fact, you might accidentally summon Kurt Buziek, from Earth-2, the evil creator of "Cosmo City" and "Dartsmith".

You can't just trick a Kurt Busiek into appearing. You have to be more subtle.

Like this:

"Gosh I wonder if Kurt Busiek's use of Qward from COIE in his recent JLA run was part of the planned run up to Infinite Crisis, or if it was just a coincidence?"

It is my mission to make sure this picture is on every page of this thread on the account I just can’t stop laughing at it. I was actually having a pretty bad day with my brother’s computer coming down with a bad case of a Spyware program and was felling crummy until I saw this a little while ago. As an aside to the discussion all people that put out Spyware and viruses need to know that there is a special place in hell for you. We had to buy special software and the damn thing still isn’t fixed. Now I’m getting angry again.

It is indeed a cute animation, but while I know it's a happy little girl in a blue penguin costume, part of me thinks a poor child is being consumed by a giant mutant creature.

You know my initial impression a while back was that Ky was a carnivorous cannibalistic giant penguin that brought the funny. Out of curiosity what make you think that a girl child as opposed to a guy? Anyway with Kurt still unaccounted for you’d better watch that beer unless we want a repeat of yesterday.

We’ve put poor Kurt in quite a bit of a jam. On the one hand if he posts he sets precedence for anyone calling him out to chat. While I know he is a nice guy if the man wanted a forum I’m sure he’d have little trouble getting one. One the other hand if he doesn’t post he looks like a bit of a jerk. This is all Yogo’s fault. First he creates the never ending thread, which if you read it all the way through, is a long, long sentence about his buttocks and now this. Bad Yogo bad.

When I read that Mark Waid read mostly science oriented nonfiction I figured him to be a very soft spoken buttoned down scholarly type who would never openly have a cross word with anyone and would view vulgarity with great distain. I pictured him looking like a character out of Sherlock Holmes novel and figured he spent his day reading complex science journals and solving complex math problems. I was wrong. It's perfectly normal Lester. Kurt wanders in from time to time. We don't even get star-struck when Mark Waid wanders along.

You must understand I have everything the man has written so if he shows up it should be expected that I go a little ape. Several years ago I even ordered two novels he took part of just because his name was on it. The first was a Spider-man novel called Goblins Moon (I think) which he co wrote with somebody. I liked it but the parts the other guy wrote were pretty boring. The second novel, which I never got, was a short story he wrote in an anthology of dirty stories. I can’t fathom how you guys can play it cool when he shows up. Kurt’s story is one of the most inspirational out there given his health issues and the way he never complains about what plagues him and just solders on.

If you want Waid to appear, you must start an impossible Trivia Challenge. That was the last time I saw him here.
Well, sure, he's posting under his alias of Gail Simone!
You ever seen them together? And notice how the two best DC comics right now are by Waid and Simone? And that she looks oddly like him if he wore make-up, prosthetics, a wig, was prettier and had no Y chromosome? Huh? HUH?

We play it cool because he's like us: a fan. He's another human being. An immensley talented one, at that. But you don't see us throwing our underwear at him.

Kurt's a fun, silly, humble, witty, gracious, intelligent guy who loves comics just as much as we do. We love it that he finds the time to come here and chat once in a while.

Also, this is the Church of Gail. We worship no other.

For what it worth no matter how much I geek out I will never fling my underwear at anybody. No one and I mean no one sees my underwear. If you guys think I’m bad with Kurt you should have seen me with Tony Bedard. He was at a comic convention last summer and I could not find the nerve to approach him. My copy of the first Negation trade still remains unsigned.

As for Gail I would have geeked out for her last year, but I feel like I know her now so I’m able to be in a relative state of calm when she posts.

How do you know which parts I wrote and which parts Nathan wrote?

As it happens, I was responsible for the bulk of the plot, Nathan for the bulk of the writing - though both of us had plenty of involvement in the other guy's stuff, too. So there isn't a page in the book you could say was all-Nathan or all-me.

The second novel, which I never got, was a short story he wrote in an anthology of dirty stories.

Presumably, HOTTER BLOOD, edited by Jeff Gelb and Michael Garrett. It's an anthology of erotic horror stories. Mine is a vampire story called "Confession," a title I reused a few years later...

I met Denny O'Neil a couple of years ago, in the lobby of Radio City Music Hall. A friend of mine knows him and his wife well and they were going to dinner and she introduced us.

I'm sure I blathered like an idiot. Denny's wife is incredibly gracious and lovely but Denny...damn, he looked sharp in overcoat and fedora. Old School. He couldn't have been nicer.

I'm usually not nervous with pros.

Grant Morrison rocks. I always spend a good twenty minutes chatting with Kristen and him when I see them at conventions.

A few exceptions:

1.

I got invited to hang out at a bar with some editors and the editor who invited me apparently had something come up and never showed. So I'm standing there in a noisy, crowded bar, sandwiched between Joe Quesada and Phil Jimenez with nobody to introduce me.

I felt like a freak.

2.
I went to a con wearing a Flash T-shirt. Sat in the third row. It was a BIG panel. Waid, PAD, Byrne... I'm sitting in front of Byrne and he's just staring at me the whole time. I'm sure he didn't mean anything by it but, MAN, did it mess with me. I'm sure it had to do with the shirt and that he was thinking about something but his eyes were just locked on my shirt for forty minutes.

3.
Another time is when I was 18. I was at Dragon*Con and there were rumors of Wildstorm buying out DC. I can't remember what I said. Maybe it was about how I thought AstroCity might end up crossing over with DC?

Anyway, Kurt was standing with Bob Wayne directly behind me and he jumped in. It was then that I realized that anybody and everybody is within earshot at a convention and you should know whereof you speak.

Now, I quietly weep for the people standing in line for Jeph Loeb's autograph who bash Rob Liefeld (Liefeld's a family friend of the Loebs) and it's really fun to watch how many people say things at cons with no clue who's around them.

The internet is actually a lot like that too.

Except the people making the noise generally don't realize who's standing behind them.

That said, Lester, the good experiences outweigh the bad. It's better just to walk up and talk with people when you see them. There's nothing cooler than being invited to walk past security lines at the cons to chat with people you've developed a rapport with. And I've seen days when even the big names like Waid get a crappy little autograph table that nobody notices and they look like they could use a friendly face to talk with.

I mean, y'know, don't cause somebody to miss their flight at the airport but a friendly, "I like your work" is a nice gesture, I think.

Seriously, Pip.

Phil is a super-nice guy and he was one of only a couple of people who I felt comfortable with helping me out by helping me look for my contact.

Joe Kelly also gets mad props for being the guy chilling outside the bar who helped me out.

Pretty sure it was all a bad miscommunication but I felt awkward being there and both Jimenez and Kelly helped ease the awkwardness a little.

You gotta see these convention-season bars fill up to really get a feel for the chaos.

It's like all the big power players in the industry stumbling over eachother in a place the size of a kitchen. Further inside, Joe Kelly and his buddies were sitting around a piano, chatting.

Outside, one of the most attractive young women I've ever seen was crying her eyes out. Heartbreaking. I'd almost swear I'd seen her in a TV show or a movie. And behind her, high rollers sat at patio tables, smoking cigars and drinking scotch, telling WILD stories about pros shaking down editors for money and other assorted bits that made the comics industry sound more like the mafia than a bunch of highly creative geeks.

I finally went a few blocks down, passing by Amber Benson (who just seemed to be enjoying a night out with friends) and a LOT of celebrities' limos before passing Jeph Loeb (who I think was catching a Sinatra-style lounge act) in the lobby of the next hotel down to use a pay e-mail terminal.

Have I dropped enough names yet?

If you can't get that greencard, pip, at least make use of a passport and hit one of the big cons.

I can't take two steps without running into Mike McKone, Mark Waid, Mark Hamill or Grant Morrison. (There. THAT should be enough name dropping.)

I don't know about Burden, but I quit a few years later. Waid didn't really preach or anything. However, Waid did help me with another problem. I had met him several months before in a LCS in Tupelo, MS called Gun Dog Comics (I almost shook the poor man's hand off when we were introduced by the owner). When Dragon Con came around, I noticed how he had lost a lot of weight and asked him how he did it. He said, "I just started eating like an adult and laid off of the McDonald's." I followed his lead and lost thirty pounds myself over the next several months. I've gained it back since then due to prednisone steroids, but, it was the most effective diet I've ever been on.

Hey Kurt! I love The Dark Age, but how soon are we going to see some more of present-day Astro City? I am acutely aware of how much time has passed, because my oldest daughter is about the same age as Astra, and she's in college now. (She had an Astra lunchbox for a while, till she lost it.)

How's Brian doing as the Confessor? Did Samararitan and Winged victory ever have a second date?

Enquiring minds want to know!

Kyuubi I understand your enthusiasm to keep dancing but I already said it was my mission to keep you shaking you penguin booty. MINE. I actually sent my post of you dancing only to have it not accepted as they were updating the site and it would take a couple of hours. I came back and the repairs weren’t going as planned and I had to wait. And then I succumbed to the viscous entity known as sleep.

Pretty much the exact same thing happened that took place on page six.

Speaking of physiological irritations I used to get migraines until I learned to give them to other people with powerful spastic hand gestures.

If Kurt Busiek doesn't want to answer I will understand. Now I wasn't online in the late 1990's and never knew about this. But In an old...old..old Wizard from 1998 , John Byrne is giving an interview.

In it he talks about his Spiderman Year 1 revamp ( utter crap is more like it) and his opinions. In one statement they bring up an exchange you 2 had online where he claimed that some of what your " Untold Tales of Spiderman " was gonna be " Man of Steeled " right out of history. As a retcon.

Now no clue whatsoever about this. This was in Wizard 83# and as a non-internet fan then I had no clue this exchange happened. If its to sore a subject then I respect your wishes not to reply to it.

You don't actually ask anything about it, so I don't know what you want to know.

The exchange they refer to happened in the old AOL comics folders. As it turns out, I don't think John wound up contradicting anything I put into those stories, and since I've used some of the characters since, they seem to have survived as part of continuity just fine.

I was in junior high school in 1973. "Craptacular" was something we said back then.

Busiek ? So, what ?

Can one be nonchalant about the rising and the setting of the sun? Can one be nonchalant about the cycles of spring, summer, fall or winter as it relates metaphorically to a human’s life span? Can one be nonchalant about Armageddon or conversely eternal peace for all the people of the world? Whenever he who writes Astro City as well as He who can get me to buy and love certain marvel books I normally wouldn’t touch appears it is not an incident but rather an event of epic proportions. Your lack of faith in The Man is disturbing. Who else can make the martial relationship of B characters like Pepper Pots and Happy Hogan high drama without taking the story away from Tony Stark? The man thats who and don’t you forget it.

Guys.

Allow me to be serious for a minute here. This thread's been going on for close to two months now, and meaning no offense to anyone, it's getting tiresome.

If you look at other threads, it's pretty easy to tell what sort of thing will make me "appear." I'll post if I have something to say -- it's as simple as that.

But posts that assume I'm a dancing bear -- that the object isn't to get me to post anything that's actually worth saying, but rather just to post anything at all, so the poster can say, "Look, look, I made Kurt type words and hit 'post'" -- aren't something I have any interest in. So those, I'm not gonna respond to.

This includes repeated postings of some animated GIF, whatever it is, or questions that it's obvious that the guy asking doesn't care what the answer is, or saying my name three times. It's like you're trying to figure out how to make a dog bark on command.

The thing is, I'm not a dancing bear, and I'm not a cocker spaniel, either. I have no interest at all in posting just to make empty noise.

Saying my name -- even once -- will get my attention, sure, but unless theres some sort of interesting subject attached, something beyond, "Speak, Busiek, speak! Good dog!" then I've got nothing to respond to.

I'm a comics fan. I come here in my spare time and respond to stuff I'm interested in responding to because I like to talk about comics. I'll talk about stuff from obscure Seventies comics to Kurt Schaffenberger's favorite assignment to whether female creators should be assigned to female characters, and plenty more. But those are subjects you can have a conversation about, not just noise with nothing behind it.

If you have a question -- one that you're actually interested in the answer to -- or an observation, review, comment, whatever, just make it. If I have something to say in response, I'll say it.

But make it in some other thread, okay? Let this one die off.

Returning to the Superfriends, the Wonder Twins tend to take a critical hit.

But then I think of Marv and his Scoobie-like pooch who proceeded them. I liked them even less...

I think that if the Wonder Twins had tamed their monkey companion a bit it wouldn't have been as annoying.

But laughing seemed to have been important. I have nothing against laughing but Gleek's laugh seems to have precursored the sound of an eraser on a dry board.
