Ok peepsocks,
you've all convinced me to give BoP a go ( shows it doesn't take much to presuade me).

So here's my question:

Should I start now, with today's issue, or should I wait 'till after the one year jump?

Cause people have been saying the team will change, so is there any point collecting 4(?) issues of this team?

Gail? (You probably don't care as long as you get my money. <.<) Anyone?

I'd think whatever changes take place after the jump will have more meaning if you have some sense of what the book is like now.

I'd suggest you try the trade paperback collections, (Of Like Minds; Sensei and Student), too.

The best thing would be to read the trades but if you want to take a short cut then last month's issue is probably a good jumping on point.

Also, about Gail, she is a really cool person besides being a great writer, so she would definitely not steer you in the wrong direction just to get your money. ;)

I recently dropped the title, but I think it's the best monthly title DC publishes and has been for some time. I doubt you'd be disappointed in it if you started now.

Now, in case the changes are for the worse.

You may want to start picking it up now though I'd suggest perhaps picking up the trades first to see if you like it. Gail writes good stuff, you won't be disappointed ;)

Pickup al Gail trades for sure. They are so great. I really am excited about almost everything Crisis, but if there were no such thing as Crisis or One Year Later, I'd still get all the back issues rather than wait any longer. You owe it to yourself (Ok, gail, does that get me in an issue of Boids?)

I'd also advise that you started today. Today's issue was fantastic, and you really don't need to know much of what went on recently to understand it. But it does set up something big....

And if you have any questions, any of us BOPpers would be happy to fill you in on what's happened.

You also won't be disappointed with any of the trades by Gail. They are fun and exciting reads.

I'd say start now too... we're about to see

ORACLE vs CALCULATOR!

Oh and get back issues, esp BOP #81 - 85.

Well, that is not true. When I have asked about Savant I was told to look it up on google.

Ok,ok.

I shall start with today's issue, I'll get it tomorrow.

New shipments come in on Thursdays, being Ireland and all.

ANd seen as I'm going on holiday, and need some reading material, and don't like books.

I'll get one o' the BoP TPBs.

Go me!

EDIT: Plus I love the calculator and Deathstorke, so I might get it just for them. =D

If you are going to get one of the Trades, I'd recommend Sensei and Student. I was picking BOP semi-regularly until then, and that made it completely regular. The appearance of my favourite hero (see avatar) in a later Story Arc was just icing on an already very enjoyable cake.

I would say start today, honestly. Some interesting stuff in this arc. Then OYL just goes nuts.

Some Savant info to get you started...

Savant was a villain that was a match for both Canary’s fighting skills and Oracle’s information brokering skills and was introduced in Gail’s first arc (I believe) issues 56-59.

He manages to capture Black Canary to try to ransom her to Oracle for the information of Batman’s secret Identity. His motivation was that Savant once wanted to be a superhero, but basically got dissed by Batman for his lack of concern when it came to innocent people.

Basically, Oracle gets the best of him, and manages to get some secret files that Savant had. Though Huntress played a big role in rescuing Dinah who had been pretty broken by this time.

Savant and the Senator gather up a bunch of women, including Babs, to try to find out who Oracle is. This results in a suspense thriller where we see a lot of people fighting for Babs, including Catwoman, Katana, Huntress and some others.

So Oracle pretty much has these files and uses them as leverage against Savant, some of which include secrets on Senator Pullman who we see in the latest issue of BOP.

Now, Oracle has taken Savant in as an operative, though she keeps him on an extremely short leash. He’s done some bad stuff in the past, including horrible things to Canary. But there is a therapy session in issue #74 that’s a must read.

Hope that helps somewhat. I’m sure there is stuff others can add that escapes me at the moment…

Not every issue is a good jumping on point, but I think today's is. It's a real good read, and the things that carry over from past issues are pretty easy to pick up.

I don't remember but it's all good. I found the information online.
It is just that I started reading BoP a little late and Savant and his henchman (forget his name right now) had already been introduced. I had no idea who he was or what his relation to the Birds was.

One thing I didn't see mentioned about Savant is his memory problems. Being a bit of a, well, savant, he has Oracle's perfect memory except he doesn't always remember in the right order. He can't recall very well if he's in the now or remembering something from the past.

It's a very interesting quirk.

I mostly trust you on this (the whole "Huntress walking out" thing still bugs me, but it's been patched up pretty good, so OK... :p ) but there's the "it ain't broke,so don't take a sledgehammer to it" factor to consider as far as the editorial mandate for parts of OYL is concerned.
