Did anyone else catch this last night?

I couldn't stop laughing while I was watching! It was such a funny show!

The best parts were with Stone Philips.

Man, what a great show!

Colbert: "It's French, bitch".

I had to stop working out during the show, I kept laughing too much.
Colbert has consistently been the funniest correspondant on the Daily Show for years, even before Jon Stewart started hosting. He's hilarious, and I love how he stays in-character even during the interview segment

"Now I've made some hard accussations about you Mr. Brady. If you don't come on my show, you're a coward."

"I'm placing Chewbacca next to Lady Liberty, in hopes they'll mate in beautiful and unholy galactic sexual congress."

It was damn funny.

He was so amped up though. It seems like it would be really hard to stay in character and keep the energy going throughout every show, 4 days a week!

The gravitas showdown at the end was really priceless though.

He's definitely got balls. And he knows how to use them.

It was really, really funny. I enjoyed Colbert doing Stone Phillips' neck thing. I'm also glad there's another good half-hour after the Daily show now.

Loved the bit about "Someone will complain that that's not true, but that's because they looked it up in a book, instead of in their gut."

I caught episode #2. Very, very funny.

"His, this is Tim Russert coming at you from the R Hole." lol

THere was a great NPR interview with Colbert a couple years back (got 'em as mp3 files). He explains at one point that his TDS character is based on Stone Phillips....and Geraldo Rivera.

You're welcome. :)
I've decided that that is the best possible forum signature, meant for just such occassions.

Nice to see Steve a bit more relaxed already in his second show, asking more serious questions but still very ready to toss off lines like the stuff about Russert in the "R" hole. Although I guess that could have been a pre-arranged anecdote like the ones the the other late night hosts are so well known for. I like Conan's celeb interviews but I swear they must rehearse every one with the stars before every show.

Looking at your posts, combined with the sig...

It's like the chinese fortune cookie game.

I thought last night's episode was the weakest of the three so far. Colbert seemed to have trouble every segment with tripping over words from the prompter, which always disrupts the jokes. Still good though.

"Isn't a centrist just somebody who doesn't have the balls to be a fanatic?"

And we should all pay more attention to Spastic's posts from here on out...

Comedy Central has renewed the series through 2006.

Haven't seen it yet but I've heard lots of praise on it.

Question: Do you think it'll surpass the Daily Show in popularity (and ratings)? (Or has it done so already?)

That's a good question. No, I don't think it will, Lena. The Daily Show is more of an ensemble cast. Colbert obviously has a great team that occasionally gets some screen time. But Colbert's show is primarily about his character's self promotion, with occasional forays into the news. The Colbert Report reminds me a bit of Craig Kilborn's Daily Show.

Colbert has been flubbing some lines. It surprises me, since he has excellent diction and a background in improv. It's still quite funny. Plus, I love the experimental quality of the show. They haven't really settled down into their format yet, so they get to try new things.

No, because it's on at 11:30.

I think the issue with the Colbert Report is its more specifically parodic nature. Unlike Jon Stewart, Colbert is really playing a role, and the gimmick of it could get tiresome after a while. For instance, during Colbert's interviews, he maintains the charade of being a pompous right-wing pundit, and he and his guests kind of play this tongue-in-cheek game rather than having an entirely sincere conversation. It hasn't been a big deal so far, but I really wonder if that joke will still be interesting after a few months, or in a year.

Right now, though, I'm definitely liking it.

The show is still finding its footing, but its off to an awfully good start.

I like his segment, "The Word". Stephen and the Bullet Point never fail to crack me up...

His news segments are pretty good, but not as good as Stewart's. I didn't care much for the couple of interview segments I've watched, but that's possibly because I was getting a distinct "Ali G" vibe (in that I wasn't sure if the guest realized that Stephen's playing a character, they seemed to be taking him really seriously).

I hope he gets through all the congressional districts. And then they could collect all the segments on a DVD set. Hmm...

I don't know if there's been more than one Tek Jansen segment on the show, but the one I saw was hilarious. If there was a whole book, I'd buy it!

anyone trying to catch this segment in the many reruns will find it at the very end of the show right before the final credits.

I love this show. Comedy central is the best place to be when it comes to comedy, and this guy is the next big thing. He's obnoixious, rude, sometimes unpopular with the folks watching, basically just like Bill O'Reilly but with a sense of humor.

Personal favorites include:

The interview with Ron Paul

The interview with Thomas Jefferson

The word on illegal aliens

Anyone else with me?

Colbert isn't afraid to put out arguments and logic so out there to make his audience laugh.

Anyone see that interview with Jesse Ventura last week? What the heck has happened to that man? O.O What a weirdo?

He's living in Mexico now, growing out his bald head, looking like some fat, steroided up hippie living in the stix..what the hell? This man was an Elected official?

The more I watch the less doubt that Colbert is a satirist on par with his contemporary Cohen and perhaps on his way to history like Hicks, Sellers, Vonnegut, and Swift.

If he didn't amuse himself on some level, he probably wouldn't do it, unless comedy central pays better than we realize.
