Actually, that makes a lot of sense considering that going to prom is considered a significant indicator of whether you're a loser in high school and we're talking comic geeks so odds are....

I always was the DJ at the proms. I would be in a booth above the crowd and locked safely away.
My crowning moment was when in the midst of the well dressed and popular folks dancing to "Reunited" and "All Out of Love" and "SuperFreak", I spun the extended live version of Black Sabbath's (Dio era), "Heaven and Hell" from Live Evil. The boos..the tears...the shouts...the screams..

Ahhhh..victory.

Actually, that makes a lot of sense considering that going to prom is considered a significant indicator of whether you're a loser in high school and we're talking comic geeks so odds are.... Even people who don't want to go usually end up scrambling for resources and a date just so they don't get pegged with the assumption that they didn't have the money or they couldn't get anyway to agree to be their date.

That reminds me. There was a big sociological book written recently about a particular town's prom. It was a major tradition there. But in a community-building way, not in a one-upmanship, competitive, hypocritical, decadent way.

Everybody knew I wasn't a big fan of proms. Not because of funds or popularity, it just wasn't my bag. My class was down with that & didn't give me guff. Suprising, I know. I did, however show up at post prom lockdown which was a blast.

Happen to have the author's name?

You suppose correctly. Perhaps I should work "exhibitionistic" into my sig somewhere, too.

Plus, it helps produce the blushing response. :)

Quit trying to turn this train wreck into something reasonable!!! What's the fun in that? Where's mwm and grendel824 when you need them?

Heh - I remember grendel824's adventures here. I did a search just to see if anybody had anything stupid to say about him - a good way to put twits on my ignore list. He still posts here under a different name, btw (no, not this one, genius). He just avoids making rational arguments now, because things like logic, sources, etc. are lost on most of you people (actually, just a small but vocal minority). I remember when he had a valid question about gas chambers here and was subsequently jumped on by a bunch of neo-nazis trying to discredit him. Good times. He was actually banned for refusing to admit that Geoff Johns hates homosexuals and that not retroactively making the JSA gay was part of his anti-gay agenda. Not making this up - he showed me the screen shot of the mod threatening him with a ban if he didn't stop ridiculing the idea that Geoff Johns was a bigot. To this day, every time I mention this the mod in question deletes the post, too, so you know there's truth to it.

Idiots like that are why I post here infrequently.

Are you sure it has nothing to do with being a douchebag with a grudge?

Not making this up -
Of course you are.

You can't prove a thing you've said.

And reviving a nearly year old thread?

Kinda nutty.

I read med books for fun and understand them.

I read this post, and don't have the slightest idea what any of it is about. I'm probably better off not knowing, either.

After a dozen scotches, it may start to make sense.

Not worth the hangover though.

I have an English PhD. I was going to pile on, but I actually understood that. But I was even involved in the gas chambers thread, and thus that makes me a neo-Nazi, thus my opinion is distorted by my hatred of all people who aren't straight white fundamentalist Christians.

We busted our asses for 3 years to build up a nice nest-egg for our prom our Junior year. See our JUNIOR class paid for the prom every year, and the Senior class (who paid the year before) got to concentrate on building the money back up for the class trip. So we sold magazines, candy, refreshments at dances, and generally busted our humnp to make a good prom. Hired out the Elk Country Club, a live band, a VERY nice catered dinner (not a buffet), and hired out the YMCA for after prom overnight, and included free screenings of a lot of good movies for the overnight (like Bonnie and Clyde and the Wild Bunch and Casablanca). The Seniors absolutely loved us for this.

It was a hefty chunk of change. After that we were lucky to get to NYC for our 2-day class trip.

On the other hand, the Juniors behind us, when we were seniors, wanted to go to Walt Disney World as seniors so our senior prom was:

In the gym, with parent provided covered dish buffet, junior DJs and an afterprom at the worst bowling alley in the county. (ALL YOU CAN BOWL BEFORE 6AM! WHOOPEE!)

bastiches.

It's like deja vu. This is a system that makes no sense whatsoever to me. The seniors should pay for their own prom. My school was very, very small, so the prom was junior-senior, held in the cafeteria, with tables scattered through the main hall. No dances in the gym--shoes would scuff the hardwood floor and leave black marks.

My junior class spent something like $3500 for the senior prom. This was a lot of money for our school, a big blowout, fancy professionally printed decorations, a live DJ with real equipment, take home souveniers (ceremonial glasses with imprinted with the information and a very nice frame for pictures) for each couple a nice catered buffet meal.

The next class used our leftover decorations for our prom and the music came from a stereo one of them brought from home and borrowed cd's. They weren't saving money for senior trip, they were just a group of lazy dumbasses who'd raised virtually no money and couldn't put on a decent prom.

I don't know why I even remember this, given that I didn't go to either prom. It was a big source or resentment from my class towards the next one, though. This is the same group that got their own senior trip cancelled for geting drunk on the bus on the way to wherever it was that they were going, and subsequently got all senior trips cancelled for the next four years.

The only prom I've ever been to was one I chaperoned when teaching 6-7th grade humanities, and that was an absolute blast.

Oh, and on the main topic--Good for the principal for taking a stand here.

Especially if, like some Catholic schools, it was segregated by sex.

And my mind explodes.

I went to catholic school for three years, I would've killed to be in the girls room when we had to change for gym.
