In a game of cosmic chess, a pair of Celestials witness the battles between the Small Folk and the Killer Folk on ancient Earth and believe that the guardianship of Devil Dinosaur over the Small Folk is unfair.
So they reach through time to grab someone to even the odds...that someone is the Incredible Hulk!
A fun old-school issue with artwork by THE GOON's Eric Powell.

I thought it was great. Good old fashion Hulk Action. I would pay anything to see a monthly Hulk series by this team. Give me more HULK SMASH!
I really enjoyed this issue a lot I'd love for the Hulk to go on more crazy adventures like this.

I think this issue is a blast. I'd love to see Powell get to do a at least a Hulk mini if not get a nice run on the series.

This was a totally fun romp. I'd never imagine that we would get a matchup between Hulk and Devil Dinosaur ever again. I love the whole concept of Marvel monsters, it has a pulp'ish feel to the whole line all the while using Marvel's old school creatures and heroes in creative ways.
Oh and Eric Powell is the man, I might actally check out his Goon book once the first trade comes out since his art is really good and somewhat cartoony.
What did you guys think of that back-up story of the first published Hulk tale? It felt sort of like a twilight zone episode but with a happy ending. It was also odd to see that creature be referred to as the Hulk after being so used to seeing that name accompany a big green dude. It was a neat story nontheless, I wonder if Marvel will dredge him up again and use him some day.

Did anyone notice that some of the wording was written in Kirby's bombastic style? Powell's art is great,he and Steve Rude draw the best looking Hulk.

Xemnu has appeared elsewhere over the years, most notably in a few issues of John Byrne's run on She-Hulk. He is usually colored white so I was surprised to see him an orange color in this issue. I wonder if this issue used the original color choices when they reprinted the story?

the ending was great, when they sent the two young celestials to observe the first feeting between the kree and skrulls.

The story implies these same Celestials are responsible for the Kree-Skrull War.

Ah ok.
Yeah the orange coloring was odd. He was quite a weird creature, he's like mechanical but with....fur.

I resent that Marvel feels they have to have TEH HULK all over the issue in order for it to generate any interest - I love Kirby's Devil Dinosaur, and don't feel that it needs to be slathered with another character's adventures in order to be interesting.

thanks captain obvious.
When I first heard about these Marvel Monsters books, I knew there was a huge potential for fun. Luckily, this lived up to the potential! Very fun story. And I was surprised about how fun the Celestials were. They ended up being one of the highlights of the book instead of just a plot device.
My only complaint was the back-up. I would've prefered one of Kirby's Devil Dinosaur stories. But, oh well.

I'd love to see the creative team behind this take over the core Hulk book.
It was also nice seeing the celstials shown witha bit of humor.

I'm only upset because I didn't realize David was writing it. I flipped through it and didn't really care for the art, so I put it back. I'll definately pick it up next week, though.

Thanks Josh S, I'm glad I emailed my LCSG and had him put a copy in my folder.

Very fun book, good writing and artwork, though I probably can't take it too seriously in the context of 'continuity'. The Celestials were... not what I expect of Celestials.
All in all, definitely one of the best reads this month. Buy it and have fun with it.
