I'm just wondering what city Gotham would replace? Philly? Chicago? Detroit?

Anybody know? Am I about to smack my forehead because I overlooked a link that would have the answer?

There was some kind of role-playing game that it has it's own map of the DCU, and it put Gotham City in New Jersey and Metropolis in Delaware.

But I don't think there is any official location.

According to Mayfair Games' (extremely unofficial) "Atlas of the DC Universe", Gotham City is in New Jersey. Considering that Mayfair Games' map of Gotham City more or less became the official map during No Man's Land (and in Batman Begins, apparently), I still think that that interpretation is valid.

It also means that Bruce Springsteen is from the same state as Bruce Wayne...

It's New Jersey.

Bruce Wayne was going to Princeton (which would have been the family alma mater) in Batman Begins.

Yeah, he went to princeton, but people do travel to go to school, especially ones as prestiesgious as Princeton. If i'm not mistaken, in Dark Night Returns, doesn't the blurb at the beginning mention it was modeled after New York, and at the beginning of his comic life they actually called the city New York, and Gotham later?!?!?

So Metropolis isnt in the Midwest somewhere?

Oh and NYC does exist in the DCU along with Gotham. The Teen Titans were there.

I always assumed that Gotham was DCU equivalent of Manhattan.

I always thought it was somewhere on the West Coast.

Somewhere between the Atlantic and the Pacific.

In his Swamp Thing run Alan Moore subtly insinuated that Gotham was in the general area of New England that Providence is due to the Arkham/Lovecraft connection.

Metropolis is a coastal city. No way it's in the midwest.

IMO, Gotham has to be somewhere in New York. In the early Batman comics he was in New York

Several Batman writers have mentioned that they think it's in Jersey... which, when you consider Bludhaven's status as a fishing town, makes even more sense. I'm biased, obviously, but we'll definitely claim Bats as our own. Gotham's probably in North Jersey, where all the NYC spillover leads to some really crime-infested cities (I'm looking at you, Hoboken), whereas the central and southern parts of the state are much more idyllic and forested, giving us that whole "Garden State" tag and all.

well i read gotham was based on nightime new york. metropolis on,,,, ( yeah, you guessed it) the new york of the daytime! Two very different places ;)

I've heard that. I've also heard that Metropolis was modeled after New York's west side, while Gotham City is based on the east side.

In the Oct. 96 Wizard a person writes in saying that his friend says that Gotham City was based on NYC and that his friend said that Metropolis was based on NYC.

His question was that "Can DC base two fake cities on the same real city?"

Wizards answer: "Well, it's the comics, they can do whatever they want. But the fact of the matter that your friends is right. Gotham is loosely based on New York, while Metropolis is based on Toronto."

I saw the map of that rp. That has in south New Jersey. I've always taken is as a East Coast City. But the Cataclysm doesn't make any sense then, so it wouldn't surprise me if it was in actuality on the west coast.

In addition, Robin protects Bludhaven and is a member of the Teen Titans (who are based in San Fransisco). So if Gotham is in Cali, then Bludhaven has to be as well but it doesn't seem to have the central/southern California weather going so...

That would put it on the northern pacific coast.

DCU seems to be a East Coast fictional cities.

That was one of the big plot points of Cataclysm- because Gotham IS on the east coast, it didn't make sense for them to have had an earthquake.

In addition, Robin protects Bludhaven and is a member of the Teen Titans (who are based in San Fransisco). So if Gotham is in Cali, then Bludhaven has to be as well but it doesn't seem to have the central/southern California weather going so...

It's not in Cali. Robin has to get cross-country rides there in the Batwing, usually from either Bats or Nightwing.

Is Bludhaven north or south of Gotham? I always thought it was south.

Blüdhaven is south of Gotham, as I recall. Within about an hour's drive.

As for the Gotham quake debate...people have been worrying about Manhattan's sitting on a fault line for some two decades off and on, if my seismological history trivia memory hasn't deserted me. So the Gotham quake wasn't that unbelievable to me.

I was watching "Batman / Mr. Freeze Subzero" and when Mr. Freeze was looking at Barbaras health records, it said Gotham City, New York as her current residence. So at least DCAU Gotham is in New York.

It's always seemed to me that Gotham ought to be in New York, although New York would have to be shaped quite differently in order to have two huge waterfront cities. If you consider much of what is Connecticut in our world to be New York in the DCU, it could be there, or it could be around where Hoboken is. Gotham isn't really supposed to be a twin city of New York that is directly across the river, though.

I've always thought of Bludhaven as being roughly analogous to Newark.

Where's Gotham city located on the map?

Next to Bludhaven.

Thank you, I'll be here all week.

^ It's just south of New Jersey; I remember reading in mulitple back-issues that it was around the area of New Jersey, and my father (an avid Batman fan who was, ironically, from the same state) stated that it was located around this portion of the U.S.

I believe that it was in Wikipedia that I read about the cities of the DCU and it said that Gotham is in New Jersey and it is loosely based off of New York in the night and Metropolis is in Illinios and is loosely based off of New York in the day.

Wikipedia is a great source to find out about comic book questions believe it or not.

It'd make perfect sense for Gotham to be located in New Jersey. I had always felt that it was somewhere in the New York-ish area on the East coast. The architecture of Gotham seems to fit with that of an older American city.

Gah! This just fuels me with visions of Batman creating a super Mecha-Bat to protect Gotham from Coop-piloted Megas.

Metropolis is based on Toronto, that's where Joe Shuster was from. He used to work for the Toronto Star, which is what he based the Daily Star on. He based Metropolos on Toronto.

Gotham is based off of New York or Pittsburgh.

Seems like it is based on Manhattan.

Gotham ocupies the same physical space as New York, but it opperatates at a diffrent vibrational frequancy. Gotham is just a well-established nick-name. It's real name is New Yourk-2. :p

Seriously?

I've always pictured Gotham as being in New York State. New Jersey makes sense too. Being based on New York, it retains a strong East Coast flavor. I wouldn't put it in the South East though. Being a port city, it would have to be on a great lake in order to be a midwest city.
